Could someone tell me how to go about polishing the spool shaft and the inside of the pinion gear, and other points of contact for a Garcia 7000? I chatted with a guy who does this to his reels, along with adding ceramic spool bearings to improve the performance of his reels. What would I use to polish these? Thanks for any info!!

Don't bother, you'll end up with a reel that's too fast and you'll be picking backlashes all day.

A reel like 7000, loaded with 100lb braid is what it is. I expect you can cast further than you need to if you tried and even with a super tuned reel you might gain another yard on the casts that didn't backlash. Those reel tuning bits are only relevent for the guys who are surf casting 100+ yards with the standard reel and might gain another 10-15 yards with a tuned reel. Nothing much happens distance wise for what we do, but the reel becomes more of a handfull!

A stock 7000 ABU reel is not very smooth, so if U add a set of ceramic bearings and polish the inside of the pinion gear and spool shaft, the reel will cast more freely and U will not have to put that much energy into each and every one of your casts, and after 1000 casts in one day, my arm likes it. If you run a med grade viscoity of oil like Hot Sauce in the bearings you will not backlash because you are not putting that much energy into your casts as U would if the reel was stock to make that long of cast. When U super tune a musky reel U are making the reel cast with less effort, and after 1000 casts in one day, your arm will like that. When you are reeling size 10, 13, 15... size blades today I want a reel that is smooth to reel and cast.

Try casting into the wind with a super tuned reel, then start picking out the backlash.

I seriously doubt you could tell any difference between the effort you put into casting a bait between a standard and tuned reel. Most of this stuff is just bling. Fine, if it turns you on, but won't get you an extra fish, in fact might even lose you a fish with all the extra time you spend picking backlashes!

Most reels today have a 6 pin cast controll brake, all U have to do is pull out the number of weights it takes to stop your reel from back lashings. Most of my super tune reel like my Shimano Conquests I run with 2-4 pins out, and in a day of 1000 casts into the wind or not I will back lash 2-3 times in a day, mostly because the line gets loose on the spool. U can get tune/ heavy weights for a ABU, from UTreels / Sweden. You should talk with Ulf from UTreels they sell super tune reels and parts and is one of the masters at it, and his super tune ABU reels do not backlash.

I have to agree with Tim on this one. If you are using the reel for casting real light baits or for bass fishing (gasp!) then all that tuning MIGHT make a difference but I don't think you will notice a thing when you are casting baits like we throw musky fishing.
