| can anyone help me out? I am using this stick to throw big wood swimbaits that are designed with 2/0 treble hooks. Most importantly I need a stick with some backbone for casting and enough tip to keep fish from tearing off at the boat. Ideally I would like a 9' moderate rod with a long handle. I am targeting trophy black bass. I use 25-30lb mono typically and use a 400 size round reel. I have been looking at the loomis pelagic 9 footers and the Musky Innovations super mag and monster heavy,but have not felt them nor heard much in regards to casting them. any help is greatly appreciated.
as of now I am using Okuma's guide select xh's and they are a little too limber and a shimano crucial xh swimbait rod

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | If you have the opportunity, try the handling on the Okuma 8'6" evx telescoping XH rod that was put to market at the end of 2007. Might be a bit heavier than the one you have currently. I had positive experiences throwing this rod for heavier Shack Attack lures (11oz+) fall of 2007.
Just a personal preference if you're not looking to break the bank. |

| I'm throwing the 9' Calstar in the Graphighter Series. I have other rods that I'll throw big stuff, but none have the tip of the Calstar. Frank of Frank's Custom Rods turned me on to this blank a few years ago. I like the fact that it comes in longer lengths and no extensions are needed. A true rocket launcher. I've tried to break it with snap casts in November with 1lb. baits and the thing is rock solid. I was skeptical at first, but Frankie was right on. This rod doubles as my late Fall trolling rod too. The Calstar Grafighters are one piece blanks that start out with graphite in the butt section then transition to 'E' glass at the tip. You can see how the material has a grey woven look that changes to solid black. They are considered to have an extra fast action. The first 18 inches flexes fairly easily and then it's all power.
I have built on the 9' & 8'6" heavy blank but there is also an 8-footer available.

| Deepsessions Steve is correct....The Calstar is one Bad Blank...I had Franky make me one last year...I couldn't be more impressed mine is a 9 footer with a 18'' handle....if you order one make sure you get a long handle....it really helps when throwing the really heavy baits like the big pounders,curlys,suzies,etc. One thing that really sold me on the calstar was the glass tip, it's soft enough to keep the hogs pinned and has more than enough backbone to really get a nice solid hookset when using the big rubber. I also use mine as a sucker rod, this rod works great for this also. I don't think you'll be disappointed at all, if anyone is going to Milwaukee show My 9 footer will be there with Steve Jonesi in the Shack Attack booth if anyone cares to check it out.

| I have used the XXX 7' 9" St. Croix and it will handle way heaiver baits then any other production rod out right now, plus a 5 year replacement warranty. I purchased it after a breakage with a big blue one. Really great on those 16 oz. baits. Remember, its just my opinion and buy all my stuff at full price, so I really, really shop.

Check out http://www.proedgefishing.com, I had Keith make me a custom 9'3" rod off a St. Croix Mega Swim Bait blank. It has a 18" butt section on the handle which really gives you a ton of leverage for big baits up to about 12 ounces. For anything bigger than that I would suggest getting a St Croix 8'6" Mag Dawg Rod, Have Pro Edge build it out to 9'6" and you will have a rod that will throw anything. Go with the longer butt section, it makes a huge difference, trust me.

| The new Fig Rig Jawbreaker is going to be a great rod for those long days of tossing BIG baits. I may even start to use some of the big baits this year.
I think this may be the door prize at the Milwaukee Expo Bait Swap and Social.

If referring to the fig rig tooth tamer jaw breaker this is a brand new rod, newer than most rods out there on the market. Not on web page yet, and the one on rollie and helens web page doesn't match the rod I bought at the chicago musky show. There were only a few at the show (like 3) that is why I finally bought it. I must say if you want a heavy bait rod this one seems to be the best, I also liked the proedge rods as well. But they are more money because of there custom built quality. Pro edge handle cork is also very large, if you have smaller hands this maybe uncomfortable to fish with, if you have large hands they are sweet to hold.
I looked at pro edge, fig rig, loomis, diamondback, okuma, musky innovations, st. croix rods at the chicago musky show, and for the money the fig rig was the best all around big bait rod for me. Everyone has there own prefrence for rods, so please look before you buy, or try to use one before buying that is the only way you'll know what is right for you. Fishability for the technique, How much will it cost me? I always say. I'm not going to say how much I bought the rod for but lets say what a great price compared to everything else. |
