| Has anybody ever fished for muskies on the chain near the end of July and beginning of August? We have a family trip every year and I was wondering if anybody knew where to find the bigger fish? We stay on the island on Stone Lake and I usually fish Clear, Fawn, and Island. I always locate small fish (28-36") and never seem to see or catch the bigger fish. My brother caught a 45 incher between the main island on Stone and the little bog behind that heading into fawn at noon!! I've had most of my success towards dusk and dawn. Anyone have any ideas on where to find the big fish, and when to fish for them? |

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | I was to a Halloween thingy and our walk took us past the shorline...I was pretty shocked to see how low the water level was...I know they draw down in the fall, but what is UP WITH THAT? I mean the water levels were SEVERELY LOW. Is that common in summer as well? |

Location: Madison | Didn't have much to do with the "usual" fall drawdown - the water was extremely low all season due to the drought. A buddy on Little Manitowish couldn't launch his 14' boat all year, and fished out of a canoe instead. |

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | The Chain is set-up perfectly for fishing for suspended fish, and that is almost strictly all I do there. As you probably know the traffic on the Chain during the day can be heavy. End of July/early August you should think about fishing at night and pre-dawn. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t catch them during the day. During the week the fish seem to cooperate better than weekends.
Get out suspended and your fish will get much larger. Also look at fishing some other lakes on the Chain. All the lakes have big fish in them, but some have a lot more than others. Definitely do not limit yourself to Fawn, Clear (even though this is a very good choice), and Island.
If all your catching is fish between 28-36” it is time to do something different if you don’t like those results. The definition of insanity is: Expecting different results doing the same thing you have always done. I would assume you are fishing shallow as if you were fishing suspended you would be getting very few fish under 36”.
Good luck.

| Hi Dave
If you really want to learn the Mani Chain hire Travis(CiscoKid) for a day. I have fished the chain for over 30 yrs and he showed me some spots to fish I had never tried before. If you do hire Travis be prepared for a long day, because you will get more than your moneys worth. Check out his website, some of the fish pictured came off the chain.
