Ladies and Gents:

Looking for a nice lakeside resort in Vilas County for a week rental for the family - actually two families. We could do one large or two smaller cabins to accomodate.

The criteria:

- nice owner/operators
- clean, fairly updated cabins
- bar on-premises!
- GOOD musky lake a MUST!!!
- close enough to town(s) for the girls to shop but "off the beaten path" good.
- GOOD musky lake a MUST!!!

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I second Musky Shores.

Squirrel is my absolute favorite lake for fishing. If the Muskies aren't biting, you'll have loads of PIG Smallmouths to look forward to!

www.fishtrapresort.com is on a good musky lake and has everything you want except a bar. It is but a short walk or a very short boatride to whittig's almost next to them.

This is the one I would highly recommend. I delivered more boats to this chain of lakes throughout the summer from renters of this resort. It's called Pitlik's. What a place. Very nice resort, sandy beach, bar/restaurant on site, including one of the best fish fries around! But not only is this a great resort, it's minutes from Eagle River for shopping for the girls, it's maybe 20 to 30 minutes from Minocqua. Probably the two most popular areas to visit in the northwoods. But the best part about, this is an EXCELLENT chain of lakes for fishing. The chain includes five lakes, and very good lakes at that. I would highly recommend this resort. Here is the website.

I also PM'd you.

Check out Bents Camp on Mamie Lk of the Cisco Chain.
Great food at their restaurant !
A very nice lake chain with opportunities for both numbers & pigs.
For max enjoyment, you will want michigan licenses. You can get them online beforehand for whatever duration you decide.

A resort that we have been going to for atleast 15 years is North Twin Lodge, located on its namesake. It has clean cotteges that have their own private decks, nice kitchens, a slowly sloping sand beach and swimming area for kids from very little to old, the best individual three sided boatslips, and protection by a large island from winds out of the south, west, and northwest. It has walking trails, a basketball court, campfires throughout the resort most every night and cotteges from efficiency units to those sleeping 8 or more. The lake has a rich tradition of producing beautifully marked muskies, with a consistant topwater bite. The lake is big enough and has enough different types of structure that even an experienced fisherman will not get bored.

There is no bar on the premises but there are some on the lake that you can boat to if so desired. Eagle River is 11 miles away. Phelps is on the east end of the lake.

Sounds like a great list so far.

May want to also check out the Eagle River Inn on the Eagle River Chain in Eagle River. Not cabins, it's a motel setting with indoor pool, restaurant/bar, docking piers, lots of shopping for the non-fishers, and of course tons of muskie water. You may not connect with a 30-pounder on the chain, but many nice fish abound and an excellent "family" vacation area........... "a happy wife is a happy life.." LOL!

P.S. The last time I was there the electric plug-ins did not work at all the dock slips, I would hope they got that fixed, but I would certainly ask.

The Birches is a great resort. The Godfrey's are great people. Don't forget to visit my guy crabby Ken at the Frontier Inn just down the road. Its a toss up for me between Springstead and P.I. as to where I love the most.

Thanks for all of the great advice guys. It's been a little tougher finding a cabin to accomodate our group under one roof. I am hoping to lock up a place today, at which point I'll be soliciting advice on how to fish the water.

You might want to check with Sunrise Lodge on LVD. They have a few cabins called Executive Units that can accommodate larger groups. Availability may be a problem depending on the time of year though. They have a restaurant on-site, but no bar. You can cruise over to Hillside for that, though.

EDIT: Holy cow, first post! What's the record for lurking around here?

Though Sunrise Lodge doesn't have a bar, Angler has it right. I go there for two weeks every year. FOOD IS AWESOME - I put 5 lbs every time I go. Sandy beach area, lots of stuff to do for the family including baseball fields, soccer fields, mini golf, basketball, bikes, big playground. They can also arrange for babysitting if the adults want to get away. A big plus for me is they clean your fish so if you run into a bunch of pike you can throw them in the live well and have a fish fry.

Hillside and Sunrise are both great places to stay. The Hillside bar is an awesome place to have a drink, unwind after a long day of fishing and stare at some big muskies hanging on the walls. Try their Bloody Mary's before dinner. The Sunrise beakfast is 2nd to none.
