| So I just got my order of marabou in today and must say, what a pitiful first attempt. I know, it's just my first attempt but wow was that frustrating. It feels so awkward to work with (never was a fly tier). I think part of my problem is the thread I'm using is WAYYY too thin. What size and make do folks use?
Anyone have a good pictorial of how to tie these? If not, care to bring the camera along the next time you tie a bait and enlighten folks (like me ) on the board? |

Location: On your favorite spot | rod building thread is hard to beat for tying bou - one feather at a time, every attempt will get better. i'll try to snag a camera and get a few pics of the basics this weekend. |

That would be great. I was flipping through the archives and came across a post of yours on this subject. Very helpful.
Ron,

| No harm no foul. Don't sweat it! I'll see if I can get a few pics of the baits today. Just made one a little bit ago and it went infinitely better, however I am NOT happy with the black 'bou I ordered. You'll see in the pics... |

Location: On your favorite spot | yeah black seems to be a sketchy bou color for whatever reason - most of the black i get are shorter feathers and lower quality but most are still usable once they are trimmed.
the crappier feathers you can use for your base layers but i sometimes have a hard time finding good black ones for the top layer.
btw if you're just starting, black is probably not the best color. considering the first few tails are probably unusable, start with a lighter color and it will make a big difference. |

| thats the same thing for black bucktail, they are short because they must be tainted more times than the other colors,in a 28 oz bag of boo, more than a half are just good for garbage |

The thread that I use is Coats and Clark Uphostery Thread T26. This is by far the strongest and best thread that I have ever used. Also check out their Button Thread.

| Kevin,
The top wrap I've been using is a coat thread (different brand). Really thick but definitely strong. Might try making some of the other wraps with it, only hesitation is it seems overly bulky.
Here are a few pics... First one is a shot of the UGLY final wrap job (that's when I realized I needed a different color thread) and messy top layer feathers. You can see a bit of the missing black color. Second pic, more missing black color , coat thread now and I believe that's a bit of 2-ton epoxy drying. Third, finished product of first attempt. Fourth, a personal favorite color that I have not seen many people offer baits in. Been a favorite bass crankbait color of mine for years. Fifth, white/chart mottled turned out a lot better. Sixth, have to give credit to Ron F for this one. One of my favorite LOTW patterns on crankbaits is a "hot walleye" and Ron's post a little while back of different baits he made had a similar pattern in it. Only thing differently I'd go back and do (not now) is add a touch of orange somewhere. That last one has the profile I want with two full coils of material.
Each color I purchased has different length feathers. The white is shortest probably barely reaching 3", the brown is the longest at probably close to 5" and the yellow is pushing 5" as well. Oh well... you live and you learn. This is for my personal collection (and maybe a few close friends) so I'm not too worried about it... lol

| exactly what i taught, they are not like the one people buy,but close.the fish will eat them, like every others on the market.let me suggest you to give a try to air brake or coil spring you will not be disappointed, they will last longer and much easier to tie .i like the black and the white +chart.
thats a very good start

| I'm gonna stop in the local hardware store to look for brake cable today. I definitely need something a little longer to tie the material onto. Thanks guys for your help! It was frustrating at first, but I find myself now blowing off things I've got to do just to make these baits!!! |

| Esox50,
Maribou "collapses" in the water no matter how thick you tie it. Not that you don't get a ton of movement out of it, just not a lot of bulk. Tie it thin and see if you don't like it just as much in the water. If you want to maintain bulk, try putting maribou over deer hair ... the deer hair will keep it bulked up, and the maribou will still dance. Lastly, one of the biggest advantages of maribou is that it holds water and makes for an awesome casting bait because of the water weight! |

| Roger that. I guess when I say "profile" I'm not strictly talking bulk as deer hair and probably flashabou trump marabou. When marabou is wet it tends to lay flat as you stated, but because of the stems of the feathers you maintain the length, whereas the flexibility of the flashabou causes it to get sucked in behind the wash of the blades. You'll notice when retrieving flash baits the material is puffier giving it good girth (bulk) but shorter length. My intention with the marabou was to get a bait that has lots of movement but with the added longer profile, more baitfish like I guess.
Happy New Year folks! |

Location: Madison, WI | I also just started making some larger marabou bucks. I started by tying everything onto a bucktail coil, not on the shaft itself. I also wasnt very happy with some of the marabou that I found. Very short and hard to get good feathers, you literally have to "sort" everything out before you can start tying. I'll post a few picks soon of the baits, I think they turned out ok, but you guys can be the final judges.
Anyone have any good sources of premium marabou? Ive picked some from Orvis and also tried some from Gander....its ok stuff, not what im looking for.

| Those look great. Not sure why you don't think they look good. Haven't done anything with boo yet but looking at your spinners, I think that I need to give it a try. |

Location: Owatonna,MN | Here is a marabou/hackle combo I tied. On these with 10 blades I use .062 wire. On the smaller ones I use .051. I also added a teaser blade to this one for a little added attraction. I tie all to coil I get from either cheap drain cleaners (drain snake) or lawn mower throttle cable. I use course thread that I get from Moore's.
Good luck.

Location: Madison, WI | Here are my first attempts, cant wait to give them a try. I do not care for the straight shafted baits as Ive had too many of them pry out of the fishes mouth. The split ring solves that nicely.
Cant wait to try the smallie pattern out up on LOTW, just a tasty 9 inch smallie casing a minnow.....
