| This past October, out on Rice Lake, Wi., I experienced some tough fishing conditions I hope I can get some tips on if I'm faced with those conditions again. The last week in October was beautiful with clear skies and temps in the fifties, but a week prior was heavy rainy conditions. When I arrived at the ramp, another guy was pulling out his pontoon and asked if I was launching. When I replied yes, he said that the water levels had been dropped to avoid flooding. The fishing action had just stopped. This past Sept on Rice was great with a lot of fish, nothing real big around 40 inches. It was a super tough week in Oct. with 1 fish on a manta and 1 lazy follow from a big fish on a super shad rap. I figured fish would be very tight to the available cover and move only during a very small window. But, why the tough fishing during water level fluctuations? How long does it take after water level changes do fish return to a more predictable pattern? Any tips would be appreciated. Kdawg | |

I would have not thought of this. When water levels drop, the fish tend to move off the shoreline cover as not to get stranded in the shallow water (or at least river fish do). I would have looked for for fish on deeper water structure.

| In Missouri waters when the lake level is dropping the fish apparently move out since you can't catch them shallow. | |
