| OK, obviously in the fishing business there are some big gimmicks that come along, and sometimes we find ourselves falling for them.
What was the biggest fishing or Musky gimmick you fell victim to?
I think mine was buying a Corsair...lol
-Phil Cali |
| |
| OOPs you did say Muskiee fishing. But I think this also holds true for a lot of Muskie fisherman. Definitely listening to other fisherman in the fish house up in Canada. BTW- these were walleye fisherman. Every pattern/tactic they told me was BS. I finally got sick of 4 days of no walleye's and followed my instincts and went my own way. Spent the next three days in +18 - -> 35" walleyes- wahoo-> fish on!

| I hate to admit it, but ya I bought the Banjo minnow.[:knockout:]
I also have the “flying lure” |
| |
| "They see minnows all the time swimmin' " OK the Banjo is pretty bad...lol, but at least you admit.

| Years ago I fell in love w/ the Popiel Pocket Fisherman...I had no idea that to look "cool" on the shore I also needed Bass Weejun penny loafers, madras shorts + a button down shirt w/ the fruit loop hanger on the back...not to mention the Vitalis or Butch Wax to keep the mane in place...thank goodness I no longer have any of the above![:sun:] |
| |
| I didn't fall for one, but think one of the all time silliest products was the Color C-Lector. Real close to the PH meter in usefullness to me, anyway.[:blackeye:] |
| |
| Daggone Steve, you just reminded me of those plugs made of foam rubber back in the EARLY 70s...remember those? I did catch a BIG L-mouth on one though but they didn't last too long. Wish I still had a few! I did fall for the colored Rebel divers...think they came in a 4 or 5 pak + came about from the Color Select deal...[:sun:] |

| This may sound like a direct attack, but I would say that the products that have a certain connection to PORK in the name seem to be a gimmick. It's one thing not to catch fish, but it's another to not do/work/perform out of the box the way that it is advertised. Other than buying a bunch of these non-kosher baits, I can say I have been somewhat immune to gimmicky bait sales. BUT, everyone once in a while I do ALMOST go out and buy the bait that I see strategically placed in the corner of the mouth of a muskie in magazine articles and advertisements!
Slamr |
| |
| Slamr,
Good point about the corner placed lure in the mouth. As far as the part with the pork...If we are on the same page I do agree, but only if the pork named lure is 3 letters and one word and has every possible variation of it in the BS series. The other pork bait thats two words and 8 letters total is a great bait if you get a good one out of the batch.

| I catch alot of fish on that swine bait,You have to know how to tune that bad larry. On the other hand, I purchased the bionic minnow , and lets just say it didnt catch fish like on the TV ,I think it looks awsome in the water ,but the fish don't. I wish there was a muskie size, cause Id buy it.
mike[] |

| I really never fished,,,, before I fell for my 1st,, and some call it a gimmick,,, but after 400+ muskies in the last 5 years meeting Terry O'Malley & Spoonplugging was the best "gimmick" I could have ever fallen for. [:0] [;)] |
| |
| Never fell for them myself but my dad has got a couple. Can you say, Flying lure, Banjo Minnow, Walkin' worm. But even he did not fall for the Helicopter lure. Now the Bionic Minnow..........I don't have them either but my tourney partner was the guy that made the molds for that lure. He made some money on it. But when they offered him some lures he said no thanks, could't even give him one of those bad boys. I myself still have a few "Front Runners" if any of you remember them. Also a couple King Tongs spinnerbaits. Also two side runner spinner baits. These are the only gimmicks I can think of.
Let Em Go...Let Em Grow.....Mike |

| I have to agree with Steve W. with the Color C-Lector and a PH meter I picked up about 15 years ago. I got the best PH reading in my swimming pool! |
| |
| I cannot tell a lie, I did get a Banjo kit, but I have caught quite a few fish on them. Other than that, I've resisted temptation fairly well.

| All I can say is Aqua-Vu, I have it but barely used it. [:((] Al |
| |
| Got to be the Burmek B-1, what a disaster. |
| |
| I'll step up to the plate! Here's the list:
5. Ratman crayfish
4. Ratman Perch
3. Castic Perch
2. Pig this, that, and the other
1. Of course I bit on the banjo! The music in the infomercial was way to catchy.[:sun:]
I'll admit it, I'm a lure manufacturer's wet dream. Now that I've admitted I have the problem, what next?[;)]

| You did say BIGGEST ???
You did say GIMMICK ?
I had a Tuffy , I bought a Lund ! |
| |
| Dennis,
Which was the gimmick? From experience I would say the Tuffy is one of the farthest things from a gimmick, they are great boats. I'm thinking you might mean the Lund price tag?

| I too have a banjo minnow kit, and I have no complaints about them. (well, not too many). I have caught lots of fish, mostly bass and northerns with them. Unfortunately, my brother-in-law was out fishing with me a while back and saw me catching fish with them. So now it seems that he buys every "magic" lure kit that is available! My sister still 'thanks' me for my little role in that. |
| |
| Long ago Virgil Ward was promoting a bettle spin lure with a fish as the main body. The rubber like fish was made from real fish and stunk to high heaven...but I cant remember the name of it.
Dr. Juice scents were crazy also. |
| |
| for muskies:
1. Burmek (a lure is great when it falls apart)
2. Tiger tubes! (a hot new lure that doesn't do what its sopposed to do..just goes up and down and the tentacles don't move and costs 4x what it should be)
for bass:
walkin worms, I never bought them, but someone gave me one...might as well put some hooks on a twig |
| |
| Buying a fishing license in Iowa... |
| |
| With out a doubt the TIGER TUBE. Too many reasons to list. I could probably get more action out of a hotdog and a hook.
MUSKY ILLINI
"Hellllllooooo NEWMAN!"[:(] |
| |
| The biggest gimmick I've fallen for..... Wisconsin! Where else can you find 37" muskies dead on display in a freezer? There will be a whole lot more MN and a whole lot less WI for me in the future. |
| |
| I too fell for the Great Lakes Color C Slector, but in the more expensive downrigger version. Then came the Aqua-Vu and 6" visability at 35 feet.Pikie Minnows used to be the mainstay here on the Niagara River for many years for lures that always caught Muskies. Then came the Lucky Strike Pikie, you were lucky if it even survived the strike alone!Mini screws holding the mini hook holders and I bought 48 crankbaits at one time. Capt. Larry |

| i'm new to muskie fishing, but been bass fishing forever, and I think the biggest joke is the spray scent stuff that you put on your baits.
also the walking worm is the biggest joke in the fishing industry. I did have a bluegill nip at it though.

| MUSKY FISHING WEB SITES (LOL) actually the funniest gimick I can recall is a lure with a built in flashing LED to attract fish I just can't remember the name of it
| |
| I remember a few years back, I bought me wanna them there Bulldawgs. I tied er on, give er a few casts, and threw er in the box. What a gimmick I told myself. I called Brad at Musky Innovations,he gave me some tips and tricks on how to work a dawg. So I started to use them and did I catch fish. Spring 2001 50"er,summer 2001,48" tiger, and lost a fish in the high 50's at the boat last spring and too many others to count. All caught on a gimmick. I said the same thing about tiger tubes. I bought a pack at Chautauqua, went around the corner, made a few casts and was about to take it off, slam, 45"er hits right at the boat.
Every time I get to thinkin I know what the fish want, they turn around and prove me wrong |
| |
| I'm with you on that one. My biggest fish not in the boat this year was on a tiger tube. Nobody was getting diddly when she hit. Too bad I can't keep fish out of the trolling motor. |
| |
| All right i amidt it. I fell for The Cracker Barrel Fish Whistle. I thought hey i will catch all the fish in the lake.I called Cracker Barrel up and told them it dident work and they just hung the phone up in my face. Maybe i have to believe in it more. |

| Anon,
Why don't you sign up and put your name. On the contrary Saric is a awsome guy every time I have talked with him at the ramp. Be a man and put your name up with an e-mail. It is ok to state your opinion, but at least identify yourself.

| I got a flying lure kit for christmas.
The biggest gimmick I have fallen for musky fishing is musky fishing in illinois. |
| |
| I didn't fall for it but Dr. Juice has to rank way up there. I was running the Pewaukee Classic at the time, the main fund raiser tournament for the Milwaukee Chapter Of Muskies Inc. I was looking for "give aways" to give to each contestant. Dr. Juice would send 150 bottles each year and four logo T-shirts. After each tournament we would have the top three places and the biggest fish winner
wear the shirts and take their pictures and send them to Dr. Juice. Dr. Juice started using our Tournament in their national advertising, saying "Pewaukee Classic 1st, 2nd, 3rd place two years in a row.....three years in a row....
Their product certainly didn't hurt, but I don't know if it helped the fishing![;)]
It advertised their product and got us donations, everyone won! [] |

| anon,
just stop bashing people. how would you feel if someone called you certain names behind your back. I don't know Jim, but I'm sure he's a great guy, maybe he just had a bad day, have you ever had a bad day? Well I just gotta say, and I'm sure everyone else feels the same, if you are going to post your opinions on people, then at least put your name. Thank you,

| Bought a spoon one time that had slots cut in the middle where you were supposed to insert, the long way, a little glow stick that came with it. Great for night fishing I thought.
One of my other favorites was a stick of "Chummin' Rub". It was an attractant in a Chapstick-like tube. I also keep several tubes of 30 SPF Chapstick in my box, and after a few years the labels have come off of all of them. Don't know how many times I nearly coated my lips with Chummin' Rub before I finally threw that thing out.
| |
| Jamie, I almost forgot about that one. LOL
The Chummin Rub for the serious anglers.
Isnt life great.......[:p]

| How about that Minn Kota that had the built in depthfinder but all they did was flash a pattern.I bought one.I remember the color select thing, was young kid back then. |
| |
| I fell for the "flying lure". (but i was only 15 at the time). |
| |
| I agree with Karen, Jim is a great guy. I walked up to him once at a sport show with an EA hat and sweatshirt once. I think he though I came over to stir some s^%$ at first but he shook my hand and started talking. Now I wear a MH pullover and a EA hat to the shows. He gets a kick out of that. |

The biggest disappointment I can think of......for sure, it has to be anyone who thinks they can make a musky reel besides Abu Garcia. I think the Calcutta 400 TE's are sweet....but dude, we're musky fishermen, not bankers.
In a few days....I'll be landing a 40#'er on the Ottawa. Man, every night I've been dreaming of the hawg we might troll up from the deep. |
