Location: Land of the Musky | One item I incorporated into my bucktails was the first hook placement. I see yours are away from the blades. The theory I heard, and believe in, is that when a muskie or pike is zeroing in on the vibration they will hit the blades or right behind them. For this reason I put my first treble hook right behind the blades. Not so they touch when they are trying to get started out but right behind that point. About 2-3 mm behind the blades if you let the bucktail hang. Not sure if it helps hook ups but I like the theory After hearing this I did look at my Cowgirls and the blades (when hanging) just miss touching the first split rings. Nice bucktails BTW! What brand of flashabou are you using and what size hooks? |

| tacklebooty, i use both methods of the hook placement, iI guess it depends on where iam fishing, i will try to put one up with the hook up in the front!! I use the cheap flashaboo from bass pro shop for now and i use mustad or eagle claw 5/0 or 7/0 depending on size!! All your lures i see on are awesome!! Thanks and i will try to put more of my buscktals up later after the bears game!! lol |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I debated about first hook placement too since I kept the blades farther from the hair. Most musky try striking the bait near the head, or front of forage. I put the hook above hair body but didn't look right. I like the hidden hook affect. |

Location: Land of the Musky | needa70lber-Yes. I want to make a 9 or 10 inch Shad. One for 10 foot and one for 25-30 foot. Problem is cash to make the models, molds, testing etc. and I am not sure how many people would want them... I sell a lot on eBay but if you watch my auctions you will soon see I don't get great prices. In fact I lose money on many of my auctions. eBay is not the best place to run a business. LOL Good way to get 5,000 lures out in 3 months though just not much to show for it and the FET taxes are killing me. Can't wait for tax time this year...yikes. |

|
| a 9 to 10 inch sshadrap will be a very good seller, why?because nobody build that, and everyone like the supershad rap!try, you will not regret your move.some fisherman are very conservative, concern the name of lure builders,i dont use bulldawgs, but if i was one of those who like that,i will surely give a try to your superd, because they look good and the price is low
good luck to you tacklebooty |

Those are very nice! I like that green metalic blade on the bottom pic.
The other blade is hard to see on that fat perch color it is a translucent yellow with the translucent green. |

| What are you guys using as a base for tying the marabou or flashabou to the wire. I coiled up some stanless 0.040" wire for that purpose but wondering if there are alternatives that can be store bought.
Thanks |

Easier and quicker!! |

| Moore's Lures (and probably Stamina) have coils you can buy to tie material to. |

| Thanks guys, A few other questions:
How important it is to have a coil that spins freely on the wire shaft. The Double Cowgirls that I bought from the store have skirts that spin freely. My home made coils are a bit tight. Hoping that this does not create more of a tendency for the skirt to get tangled with the middle hook on the bucktail.
Other questoin is if you are using storebought coil, how are you securing the coil while tying the mateiral on. On my home made coils, I kept a straight piece still attached that I clamped with my fly tying vice which I trimmed after securing the flashabou.
Also, checked out moors lures - they have a good selection of musky supplies. Thanks for the tip.

| If its marabou i would wrap it with fly line and epoxy it, if its flashabou i zip tie to the coils but you can tie it up with fly tying material also and i aslo zip tie my rubber skirts around the rubber band it comes on with the smallest zip tie you can get by with, the bigger the zip tie i found it limits the action, I dont mind the skirt spinning as long as it keeps its action. Also esox50 is right you can find these at what he mentioned or you can buy flashabou tie up for you through www.htlures.com!! If you buy through Rollie& Helens that is the company they sell! If you dont like your skirt to spin Stamina sell coils with keel weights on them. Hopefully this helps you and good luck!!

| After making a handfull of these double 10 bucktail baits, I am finding that the flashabou goes fast and is by far the most expensive component of the lure. I use about 1/2 to 2/3 of a flashabou bundle for each bait. Has anybody found a source that sells this material in bulk quantities for lower price? Best source that I found so far is Angler's Workshop at $3.29 (standard and pearl) to $3.79 (holo and glow) per pack.

| This is my first batch. Although the photo looks kind of green, the top one is black and silver blades with pearl / holo black flashabou. I do fish the Chip a few times a year. Thinking about making a holo green / holo black / chartruse one with chartruse and black blades for the chip. |

| i finally got enough "practice" done taking/remaking old bucktails and broke out the new components. i wish i'd started doing this years ago...pretty easy, saves a lot of money, and it's a fun way to pass the winter.
on the double-10s i too like to put a hook (5/0) near the blades, just far enough down to not hang up in the blades. i'd added a hook like this to any double-10s i was throwing that didn't come with one, and i've got a few blades with teeth mark dents...
1) rubber/rubber/tinsel
2) tinsel
3) firefly flashabou/rubber
4) marabou/firefly
5) tinsel/shakertail
we'll see if the cheapo tinsel holds up. if not, i'll just replace it with real flash and reassemble the lure on a new wire.

| 70pounder,
That should be a sweet little stick of dynamite! Small profile behind those big blades might even increase your hooking percentages (beyond what a normal bucktail exhibits)!
Fish4,
As long as you don't "pin" the beads and body to the shaft by jamming them up to the loop then your clevises should spin just fine. I leave a little space at the top so this doesn't happen.

Location: Madison, WI | What size clevises do you use for the Double 10's. I initially had issues with them spinning as I was using a small bead on top. I was also using a #6 clevis with .051 wire. After that I ordered some "magnum clevis" and placed them on without the small bead on top. Worked alot better. Do you think the issue was the #6 celvis having too close an opening to the wire diameter. |
|
| |
|

| Hmm, that's strange. Those are #6 clevises in the pic on .062 wire. I wonder if the bead diameter was too small and THOSE weren't able to move? Those beads have a diameter of .063 or something just a little bigger than the wire. |
|
| |
|
| esox why do you put that bead on the top of the clevis? |
|
| |
|

| Two main reasons:
1) In the air, it produces extra rattling when the blades vibrate. Underwater I'm not so sure. I wish I could take underwater acoustics of the bait to see if that little bead registers any frequencies.
2) Aesthetics (looks). Just sort of completes the bead set below the clevises. |

| Hey 70lbr,
Great looking bucktail!! Like the smaller size. One question, what size are the blades?? |
|

| I think the friction of the bead will slow the natural spinning of the clevises!! Water is pushing the bead against the clevises and that is what I think will slow
the starting of the smaller blades!! I now leave the top bead of all my bucktails and have no problems, besides that great stuff!! I never had that problem with the 10 blades but decided to take the beads off anyway!! |

Those are the number 10's, sweet uh!!! Hopefully I can get the bait from tumbling while being retrieved. May need to keel weight em?

| Pete Yake and others,
Regarding the coil used as a base for tying your material on... Stop by a welder's shop or business that does welding and ask them if they could save you a liner from a wire-feed welder. It's just like the choke/throttle cable others have suggested but it'll probably be free. These liners are what the welding wire feeds thru. Every so often these get kinked or wear out and then they're junk. Most welders just toss them in the trash. Just one welder liner will be a lifetime supply for many of us basement "bucktail" guys. See a sample liner in the pic below.
As far as clamping this coil for tying your "stuff" onto it... I've been using a fly tying vise for years. Take a short piece of .050 wire and bend one end back onto itself. Cut a piece of liner about 3/4 inch long. String your small piece of wire thru the coil and cut the wire so it sticks thru the coil about 1/4 inch or so (enough for your vise to clamp down on). Then Clamp the wire in your vise. See the pics below that show what I've just described including the coil clamped in the vise with thread wrapped around the coil -- ready to start applying your flash-a-bou, rubber, maribou, or maybe even bucktail. Hope this helps.
Here's another idea for clamping the coil. I watched the guys at Musky Mahem tying the flash-a-bou on coil and they just had a small vise grip welded to a clamp that was fastened to their table. They just clamp the coil into the vise grip and start wrapping. I even saw Thorne Bros sells that vise grip clamp setup -- didn't notice the price, though.
Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense.

| Someday I'll set up a REAL work bench, cuz boy my finger tips KILL from gripping those coils! And the brake/throttle cable is super. It's much heavier (not sure how much that matters) but a lot cheaper than buying individual pre-cut coils. My local hardware store doesn't sell brake/throttle cable itself, just a kit to fix your mower, but even the cost of the kit with the coil was WAYY cheaper than buying the same amount of pre-cut coil. Oh and the fella tying the Cowgirls at the Chicago Show was awesome. Can you say FAST? |
