The name is not so weird, the sign just says 'Pelican Lake, Home of the Muskie'

No Pelicans, but lots of muskies. Hmmmm...

How about Boom Lake? Where in the world did THAT name come from? Muskie fishing is excellent there.

Lost Lake is a pretty funny name if you know the story behind it.

Quick story.

An indian was "lost" in the woods, and was wondering around a lake looking for his tribe. He couldn't find them anywhere, and then he ran into a "white man". The white man told him he was in the wrong area, and that the indian was lost. The indian told the white man, "Indian not lost, Lake lost." That's how the lakes got named "Lost lake" and "Found Lake."

I always liked Dumbell Lake in Minnesota. I always thought it was because I couldn't catch anything on it. Turns out it's shaped like a dumbell.

Saw some big, big fish in that lake when I was stationed there in the USAF.

Bullhead Lake south of Green Bay is an odd one. No bullheads but plenty of largemouth and a few muskies.

Hungry Mother State Park in Va. was always one of my favorites - nice lake with a small muskie population, I'm told.

Then there was the story about the Indian named Fallen Rock. He became lost and the tribe could not find him. Going thru the mountains of Tennessee, you will still see signs that say, "Watch for Fallen Rock". m[]

I have a t-shirt with a map of Lake Kumoniwannalaya on it. I picked it up at Phipps tavern. I know the lake is supposed to have a decent set of muskellunges along with a nice bass hole and catfish area. The northern end is known to be shallow and lacking depth.[;)] [:sun:] []

Wabigoon comes to mind as a rather funny sounding name. How about Winnibigosh, sounds like a clothing company B'Gosh. My favorite however is not a Muskie lake. This would be Balsam Lake. But only because of the way in which it received it's name.
Seems there was a war party on the prowl many, many, years ago. When they come over the rise on the North end of the lake the war party leader exclaimed, Balls, some lake!!!! This name has remained unto this day.

We have a Bunns Lake in Cleveland.

We also have a Hoover Lake in Ohio which garnered this (true)headline "New state record Buffalo Sucker from Hoover"

In Texas they have Kickapoo, Possum Kingdom and Joe Pool.

How about "Virgin Lake" - actually there are two of them in Onieda County WI. One is a class A2 Muskie water w/ some natural reproduction. They probably can't figure out which one is the real virgin.[]
