| Maybe a dumb question, but I see these ads for used boats saying "only 100 hours on motor." I tried to figure out if this is alot of not, so assuming that we are talking a 250 hp motor that has 100 hours.. This motor probably averages 40 mph for 100 hours, that is 4000 miles (These boats have a kicker, so the hours are not being put on trolling). Mille Lacs is about 22 miles long, so that is running the length of that lake 181 times, that seems like alot... Am I looking at this wrong??? |

Location: Brooklyn Park | 100 hrs on a boat is nothing. The hr meter is running when the boat is idling, trolling and at high end. If it is a newer motor then you can hook up a laptop with the right software and it will tell you where in the RPM zone the hours all came from. But 100 hrs is about 1 season for an average angler. Some Pros put on over 300. |

| I have had a motor that showed over 1500 hours on it when I sold it off... most trolling but it still showed on the hour meter. |

Majority of fishing boats do not have a hour meter on it. So you can't do this yourself. Unless your a certified mechanic and have the equipment, then you can. Each of these motor companies have there own software they can hook up to it. That way there able to diagnose what might be the problem. That's how you can find out hours, highest rpm it's reached and a whole lot of other things.

Location: Sandusky, OH | I'll add that if you use Lowrance head units and have compatible motors, you can purchase a cable that runs between the motor CPU and the head unit that displays, among other things, motor hours. Of course, only newer motors.
Pretty cool feature. My buddy is trying to work the details out for his 250 HPDI.

| I have always added hour meters on my boats and also on farm tractors/lawn tractors, etc if they didnt come with them. There cheap and they give you a better idea when to perform regular tune-ups and oil changes.
They are cheap and you can find them lots of places.
here is a fancier one but does the job-

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | My Suzi lets me know how many hours are on it everytime I start it via the rpm gauge.
100 hours on an outboard is nothing. I do at least that in an average year. I am not using my motor for trolling at all either, just typical fishing useage throughout the course of a year.
I generally save my odometer info on my GPS through the course of the year. You would be shocked at your average speed on the water as well. My GPS is set to use a minimum speed of 5 mph before recording so it is all miles from my big motor, not my trolling motor. I will not average over 25 miles an hour for the course of a year. You put a whole bunch of hours on your motor running around structure at very low speeds. Assuming 40 miles an hour is probably quite high.
Just to reference, my boat is a Tuffy 1890 with a 200 Suzi, not exactly a slow machine, and I tend not to run at slow speeds unless necessary. I am not sure but I think I have around 20 hours on this motor (new in rig in September), and that is barely broken in. Oh yeah.....It's for sale too!

Location: north central wisconsin | I just bought a new Yamaha 90 4 stroke and started using it in September. I have 137 hours on the motor. I trolled some in November, but that should be a good reference that 100 hours isn't much at all. I put an OEM hour meter on the motor for my reference. |

| Hey Norm...do all Suzi's do that when you start them up? I never took a look at my rpm gauge when I start it but I will have to look tonight..

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Ahhhh Mr Nelson. Fell into the classic male trend of running without looking at the owners manual.
Yes yours should also tell you with the RPM gauge. When you turn the key on the gauge should bump up to your current hours on your motor. If it is 35hrs, when the all is good beep comes through your gauge should read 3500. If that isn't exactly right, consult your owners manual, or call me and I will consult mine. |

| You get directions with your motors? As I've said many times. Norm gets all the cool stuff!

| Actually I went and looked at mine...I don't have a digital readout on my rpm's or anywhere for that matter....so I'm guessing mine won't tell me how many hours it has unless it talks to me....

| ahh ok, but that isn't quite right either Norm..I would think if it bumped up to 3500 it would have 350 hours...as I just did that little test and mine bumped up to 500 rpms and that is about right as mine as app. 50 hours on it since I put it on the boat in early August....
owners manual? what's that...turn key and put the hammer down....
I did change the oil myself...does that count? |

there's a "formula" for deciphering the hours indicated on the analog Suzuki tach.
if i recall right from my old boat, it's straightforward (500 = 50) until you're over 100 hours (?). once you're past 100 hours i think it moves up to the appropriate 1000rpm mark, then will return to 0 before rising to show the additional hours above 100.
but for some reason i can't seem to find the specifics about it in my current Mercury owner's manuals.
turn key. put hammer down. look back over shoulder at guys running Suzis...
