Location: Columbus, Georgia | Guys,
I am going to LOTW for a week (Sandy's BlackHawk Lodge) late in July for a week. Given that it's one heck of a drive from KY ... I was thinking of fishing another lake for the week preceding my LOTW gig.
Can anyone share their experiences (Musky) fishing Crow, and can you suggest any other lake that's also close to LOTW that I might consider.
Recommended accomodations on Crow ?????
Thanks,
Craig

| Craig - Our group stayed on Crow for a week in July 2006. Beautiful scenery. The water is so blue it looks like Scope mouthwash.
We stayed at Muskie Bay Resort (.com) and I'd have no problem staying there again. Nice accommodations. Ask for Paul. Crow is a very clear lake so a lot of night trolling is done. It's worth checking out what the moon will be doing when you might be there.
We bounced back and forth between Crow and LOW, not really having a lot of success on either, but the last night Paul took three of us out night trolling under the full moon (a perfect night) and we boated two 44s and a 42 in five hours.
He's got the sunken islands on his graph and we just slowly trolled over and around them. Crow's Skis are real girthy due to the trout in the lake. Big smallies are in there too and I don't know if they get a lot of pressure.
If you might be on Crow for a week a guide early in the week will really pay dividends in my opinion. Our group couldn't get its act together so we had to settle for late in our week. I got the two 44s on a 13" Grandma in TN Shad.
Good luck if you go.

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Do a thread search on "Crow Lake", I'm sure you'll find lot's of info. I've fished it a couple of times and I will go back again. As has already been said, it's a really beautiful clear/blue water lake and it's got some real super tankers. If you're looking for numbers go elsewhere. However, if you go to Crow, also stop & chat with Phil at the Pro Shop in Nestor Falls. He has all of the daily local fishing updates from area resorts and local muskie fisherman. He might not give you actual spot's, but he will give you what's working.
Re. Maps- Same thing ask Phil. You will also find some previous MF threads on this subject. Watch out! There are some hazards that are not on the maps and at least one that is marked, but in wrong location.
Weather- Crow is a fairly large lake so watch the weather and make sure someone knows your daily fishing plan. The thunderstorms can be real dangerous and lightning strikes are usually real cabin shakers. The same is also true of LOTW.
Have fun!

| Craig --I can share plenty of info on the manitou if you think you would enjoy a lake trout type lake. Or Tim Hicks from morehead can certainly provide plenty of info on the manitou. not that far from most places at LOTW . MD |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Craig- If you decide on Crow, I can send you marked map sections with spot's I have found/ caught fish on. My Crow maps have also been marked up by not only Phil Haggberg (Owner of the Pro Shop-Nestor Falls), but also KARLOUTDOORS (Karl Scherer) and rpieskie (Bob Pieske) from here on MF. However, I usually don't share other's spot's, I'm sure you can appreciate that. If you contact either of them via PM, I'm pretty sure they would probably be happy to offer advice. Bob has been fishing Crow & LOTW longer most folks.
Have fun!

| If you stay on Crow you are just accross the road from LOW Stevens / Stoney Portage and Sabaskong. Also about 15 minutes down the road to Whitefish Bay which is more a mix of trout water but with nice cabbage. Great place to try out some other bays on LOW as well as Crow before you venture over to the west side of LOW. Good luck. |

| For what it's worth, have you considered maybe fishing somewhere like Bemidji/Plantanganet/Big in Minnesota? That's on the way and not too far from the Angle (I think you'd be closer to your final destination fishing something like Bemidji versus Crow on the opposite side of LOTW). I know when we go up to LOTW we stop and fish Mille Lacs on our way (BTW, thanks to Steve Jonesi for helping us out this year with info! You da'man!), then get up the next morning/late morning and drive the remaining 6 hours. You might consider fishing MN (we also hit Vermilion this year coming home) lakes on the way back if your work/personal life allows for it. Definitely get THE MOST out of your trip coming all the way from KY!
Just a thought. |
