| Hey Guys,
Great site, 1st time posting, actually ran across MuskyFirst while looking for info on the Diawa Luna 300. It's kind of strange, I live in Vegas, but from Wisconsin so reading the posts brings back memories...
Anywho, I need a new baitcaster and looking for advise on the; Daiwa Luna 300 Shimano Calcutta 400b and Penn Int 965/975 reels. I'll be throwing trout imitation striper plugs off a boat, 10 and 11' surf rods, 25-40# line, Lake Mohave, Mead. Looking for a reel that casts well, doesn't constantly overrun, holds about 250 yrs 15# mono (spectra + topshot) and has enough drag to land a 50# striper,,, if I'm lucky enough to tie into one...
I have Corvalus/Catala 400 trolling reels that work well, cast nice and have enough line capacity and drag for stripers to 40#, looking for something similar to put on the surf rods, but don't think the Corvalus/Catala can hack constant casting with a 10-11' rod.
What are the pro's and cons between the Daiwa Luna 300 Calcutta 400B and Penn International 965/975? Which reel casts better and is more reliable? What are you guys using?
I also noticed several people said the Gander Mountain Guide Series GS66HS or BPS Pete Mania reels are OK. What are your thoughts on these reels, are they good for the long haul or a disposable reel? How do they cast, good drags?
Thanks and sorry for the long winded post,
Dan

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | If you are taking all model suggestions, I'd look into the Okuma Induron. I had the pleasure of beating those reels up this season and am very impressed. The 250 will hold all the line you need, but the 400 sounds like more of a match for the rods you are using. |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | If you are looking for a great deal on a reel try the new Tica Caiman Striper le reel 9 BEARINGS will hold 275yds - 14lb line, retails $130.00 with a power handle. The best reel you can buy is the 400 TE Calcutta !!! this reel will last a life time of fishing !!! Shimano has one of the Best reel service, so you could send it in year after year for service and Shimano will make it new year after year. |

Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | The Diawa is the smoothest and casts the furthest of all the reels I've used. That includes Calcutta's, TE's, and most of the Abu line. The reel handle is also the most comfortable in the business. |

Location: Sandusky, OH | I'll cast my vote for the 975. Incredibly solid, great history in saltwater and fresh, very durable. Smoother than my other reels, and while not quite butter, it gets better with each use. No doubt it will handle both your baits and your fish.

| I have them all and they are all pretty good reels. However, I have two Lunas and for me that reel is best. |

| Looks like the Luna is the pick of the bunch.
Steve mentioned the Okuma Induron. How long have you guys been using the Induron IDX400 and how does it compare to the Luna 300, Calcutta 400B or Penn 975. I'd rather spend $250 for a reel that will last 5-10 years, opposed to a reel that needs to be replaced in a few years. Anyone else use the Induron and want to share some comments on this reel?
Thanks,
Dan |

| Be forewarned, the Luna is not a bulletproof reel. I know myself and others have had a fair share of problems, and others not. I've currently got two that need to be sent in for repairs from earlier this summer... cost my buddy a first place finish at an earlier IMTT event in Illinois this fall after the reel would not reenage. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have a year's use on my Okumas. Smooth and user friendly. I think this one is a winner, having used almost every reel ever made for Muskies and a bunch that were not. I liked them enough to buy 4 more this Fall. |

| Well,,, I decided to get an Okuma Induron, seemed like the best bang for the buck and in some reviews, equal if not exceeding a Calcutta 400b. We'll see how she goes this winter pulling on some big stripers
Thanks for the help guys!

Location: north central wisconsin | After blowing up a couple diawas and ABU's this fall trolling, and my Okumas hanging right in there till the end(well we do have a few more days...), I am interested in seeing the casting version of the Okuma. Seems they don't overadvertise, and just make a solid product. I'd recomend the convector trolling reels to anyone. Steve, have a price and specs(or link to such) on that induron? |

| i've been pleased with my Induron, good value for the price.
the power-handle is a must have upgrade, be sure to ask for one.
and thank-you Okuma for making a left-hand crank version!
Rollie & Helen's has 'em:

Location: Ogden, Ut | I don't torture reels like most of you guys w/ a continual diet of double 10 bucktails, but my Induron has been flawless all summer. It sits a bit lower on the reel seat and fits my hand more comfortably than any of my other reels. It's generally the first one I reach for now when casting. The power handle actually took some getting used to for me, but I like it now.

If I order a reel from Rollie and Helen's does it come with a power handle or do I need to specify that I want one? Or do I need to get one directly from Okuma? |

| Hey Mark, thanks for the ***FREE*** power handles for the Okuma reels.
I got them a few days after the request, talk about customer service!
Now I'm just waiting on UPS and the next trout stocking to test them out... |

Absolutely!!
I threw Pounders and Double X's a bunch this fall on an Induron and a Okuma 8'6 XH. Great setup for those baits. |

| Marc,
I have been looking to make the move from spinning reels to a starter conventional reel. The induron seems like a great choice based on the comments here. Do you still have the upgraded handle if I get the reel? |
