Location: Not where I wanna be! | Here are a couple of Iowa Bucks from last weekend
Jonny and i do lots of hunting (deer, pheasant and turkey) as well as being musky partners we see lots of ups and downs....
we both enjoyed some sweet success last weekend catching both hunts on film!!!
Iowa is not known for its musky fishing, but as far as deer goes.....its the MECCA!!!
Jonny's deer first, followed by mine!!!

Location: Nebraska | My 2007 Rifle deer. 21 3/8" inside spread true 4x4 with no sticker or kicker points. Shot a couple of miles from my home.
EDIT to add: Scored him last night when we were taking him to the taxidermist at 151 2/8"

Location: Not where I wanna be! | here is my wife with her 2007 bow kill. she is due to have our first child tomorrow..... (11/13/07)
she shot this deer the second weekend of October just to say she killed a deer with her bow being 8 months pregnant......
she laid the smack down on this big fatty!!!!
im pretty proud of her!!!

| It is my sad duty to report that one of my students shot a feral pig with his bow in the McNaughton area of Oneida county, about a 150# that was with three others, one over 300#. I have the pictures to confirm it. |

| THA4, I think I saw that first deer about 12 years ago while in IA pheasnat hunting! Man, that is one grey dude!
JS, I'll have to give "the TV host" some binness next time I see him! Which could be very soon. Did he get that land he was looking at last month?

| This beast was on the move 11/08. At 11:45am I noticed some movement and watched as this buck chased two does through the woods and out of sight. Within 10 minutes two more 1.5 year old bucks walked under my stand in the same direction. I waited approximately 20 minutes and began a calling sequence that started with a snort wheeze then a short and fairly soft rattle follwed with a couple grunts. 10 minutes later I notice more movement and he had left the two does and was coming for me. At 20 yards I drew my Bowtech and let out a grunt to stop him. The arrow flew true and the NAP mechanical did it's job. The deer traveled only 70 yards. I looked at my watch and it was now 12:35pm. What a sureal moment walking up on this magnificant animal. It was my birthday and what an awesome present!!!
I was able to accurately put a tape on him finally and it totals up to 167 and 5/8 gross SCI (green). Here are the stats:
Beams 23 1/8 and 23 3/8
G-1's 3 4/8 and 6 4/8
G-2's 11 2/8 and 11 5/8
G-3's 8 6/8 and 8 6/8
G-4's 5 4/8 and 4 1/8
Circumfences are fair but not great in the upper 4's down to mid 3's. A 19 and 5/8 inside spread is also included. 7 inches of abnormal points are included for the two extra brow tines.

First deer in the last 4, yes, I said 4 seasons came Sunday PM by Shemane (nickname for my Renegade Nuge bow. I name all my weapons after women, and Shemane is Ted Nugent's wife). After waiting ten heart exploding minutes, I spined her right under the tree. The Grim Reaper Razortip SMASHED straight through a vertebrae, through the top of the right lung, then obliterated a rib on the way out, while shot from a bow set to 62#, shooting at around 216 fps.
Othe than now being dull, coated with blood and tissue, and on display at the shop, the head is still totally intact.
I forgot what Ven tasted like, until a year ago, when Sworral had Chuck and I over for lunch. LOL. Now that I have the "Golden ticket" (earn-a-buck sticker), that non-typicall gnarlly dude I saw last week is TOAST!
This is definately not the biggest doe I ever shot (not even close), but now the pressure is off. Cape is getting tanned hair-on for my grandaughter, so she has something warm to put her feet on as she gets out of bed in the morning.
Taking her on a 30 acres that my Grandpa bought when my dad was 12, and him saying "you payed $200 for this? you are crazy!"
One less deer that is chewing on my uncle's tree nursery, PRICELESS!

(64.105.147.181) I agree , good luck and be SAFE !!! There are a lot of preventable accidents that happen every year , just a couple extra seconds could save someones life if not your own . Also remember , getting there is half the battle so DRIVE safe !!! The deer aren't going anywhere until they're being chased and/or shot at !!! Almost killed myself and my dad when I was 12 yrs. old ... he let me drive the last 100 miles of the trip on the way deer hutning in S.E. Minnesota . A buck ran out and I blasted him with our '79 Bronco that sat up on 37" tires . I did the complete wrong thing ( remember I was only 12 , that was 20 some years ago ) and locked up the tires and turned to miss the dear !!! After many drastic measures to keep it straight and on the road , I got the truck stopped . It only took about 1 second to flatten that deer , and about 50 yards of holding on for " deer " life and missing trees and the guard rail , glad it turned out the way it did . Got a good luck charm out of the deal , stopped on the way home ( 1 week later ) where I hit the deer , low and behold there was a pice of his antler laying on the side of the road !!!

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | This is my 2007 bow kill. Shot just miles from the Mississippi in a little town west of Desoto. This 8 point frame 11 pointer came behind me 25 yards away and gave me no shot. I had to watch him rip up a few trees and make a scrape just 40 yards from the tree I was in. He then came back the same way he came and I had to pass again. This time he walked up a hill worked a scrape in the sky line. What a sight and sick feeling as he slipped into the darkness. About 10 minutes later I heard the sound of two deer. First a doe and then my buck. This time he took a trail that crossed a shooting lane and the arrow took him out.
Pictures do not do him justice. Eight point frame with three kicker points. Scored at 158 green score. 20 inch inside spread with matching 10.5-inch g2's. Main beams were 24.25 and 23.5. Not the biggest in the area but at 5.5 years old and 215 dressed he could hold his own.

Location: Omaha, Nebraska | I shot this buck on opener morning with my tikka T3 270cal at about 30yds
I saw three bucks come from the same tree line within like 15 minutes and they just kept getting bigger first a 4pt then a 6pt, then this guy came along and I couldn't pass him up. While loading this deer up, my brother saw an even larger buck just walk up within 50yds of us from the same spot, but my dad missed both shots on it, blaming that his scope got jarred after previously falling.

| I shot this buck last week with my bow. His g-2's and g-3's were over 10 inches. I dont know what he will score,but he is by far my largest so it really doesnt matter.I happened to look to the right and he was trotting right at me. I turned drew my bow, grunted and let loose. It ran 30 yds and dropped. The whole thing lasted 10 seconds. It was the first time I have ever yelled after shooting a deer. The best part is that my dad was out there with me.

I wished mine lasted only ten seconds... I looked at mine as she looked at me for ten minutes (during the "autopsy" I took out the upper part of the right lung). I said "would you please die already?" I was still on maximum adrenillien dumpage.
Pulled the "victory dance" out of the pack. hit the Wiesers for a shot. 5 minutes go by. I'm still downloading the newest version of ultimate lifestye upgrade. take another victory dance. 5 more minutes go by. If anyone can calm my nerves at this point, it's my wife, Lori (lolleitta). i call her and ask her to confirm her order for fresh Veni, and let her know it's being delivered within the hour. Not her fault, whatsoever, but i think her craving ven made me shake even worse with this deer looking at me.
I hang up the phone. Nock, draw, aim for the heart, and connect with the liver! Great, now I've done more damage to this deer's heart and lungs, and liver than I've done to my own in the last 40 years! I climbed down (out of a ladder stand), and said, "youd better be dead by the time I get back here with the truck!"
20 minutes later, after calling a few of my buds (sorry K-bob, I knew you would not pick up if you were working) i go back, and she is still alive, but close to giving up the ghost. 5 hours from where I shot her to when she ended up in the freezer. Sworrall told me his record from back from registration is like 30 minutes, if i remember right. |

| Iowa truly has some giants, seen some monsters out waterfowling this year.
A friend of my uncle got this one recently with a bow, rough scored somewhere in the 180 range. A co-worker emailed me a picture of a similar sized buck this season also but I deleted it already. It was cool though becouse in the picture he had the same deers sheds from the previous three years that he had found.

| Did you sight in, Justin? But the bigger question is..... Did you get that land you told me about?
Somebody is going to be quite proud when they take the big 10'er I almost hit on Tuesday. About 20 miles east of Point, this thing was a very, very nice buck. He put on the skids as I was decelerating from 70 to 20. Stood and watched me for a bit, then swung that rack around, and wide stepped it back into the woods. Awesome sight. got the juices flowing for tomorrow!

| Yeah, I'm sighted in. Doesn't mean much. I can't hit squat when it grows big antlers. Luckily my longest shot is 100 yards this year. Unfortunately I did not get that land, didn't act quickly enough and it got away on me. It's OK though, I think Sarah will shoot me with my sighted in rifle if I don't buy her a wedding ring soon, so it's time for me to pony up. |

Then, they looked to the north and took off, over the ridge comes down a nice buck...pretty much walking a zig zag, then stuck tight to the top and about 10 minutes later he went up the other side(think he crossed the road). My fault for not brushing my property, I never had a clear shot. 22 minutes later across south shore drive, KABOOM. I doubt I'll be seeing him again >.< It's almost like getting to your favorite big fish spot, only to find someone there with the big one on. Glad we got a whole week hahaha |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | 5 days of hunting with my sons Keith and Brian and Keith's buddy. We had a BLAST camping, saw plenty of deer, and harvested 6. Keith shot a Spike opening day, Brian a 7, and I shot a hole in the air. The seer on my A Bolt stuck for some reason, twice, delaying the shot by a second. Cost me a nice 17" or so wide 6. Oh well...Weird deal, it's whisper clean. So, Keith hunted the rest of the trip with his M44 7.62X54R ( that old Russian rifle is a life taker for sure, he shot two does today at about 150 yards and dropped them both in their tracks) and I inherited the 7MM Mag.
I got a decent 8, and a nice doe in a two-fer 5 minute wild chase scene, it was extremely cool to experience. That buck had nothing on his mind but the doe, and it cost him dearly. I took the doe in her tracks after watching her rip back and forth across the area I was hunting with no buck in sight. I figured she was 'entertaining', but got tired of all the running about and was pretty certain she was heading out of the area so I took an opportunity at about 115 yards when she slowed to a trot. Soon as I dropped her, the buck's rack appeared in some alders about another 50 out; he was totally baffled where his sweetie went. He dashed about in the thick stuff not offering a shot, then suddenly shot out of the alders and saw the doe. He was OUT of Dodge then, but made the mistake of coming at me at a dead run. I took him head on and sent a Nosler through and through, yet he kept burning, so as he made a turn about 60 yards out still booking top end I tried to plink one into his neck. Hit him pretty good both times, but off through the high ridges he went.
I went in and got Keith after dressing and tagging the doe, and we went after that buck. 600 yards as the crow flies and a freaking leg burning mile including the hills and valleys later, he kicked out and tried to make it over the next ridge struggling hard. He was trying to make it over the next ridge and drop into a huge valley below, which Keith discouraged with a 150 yard shot from the M44. He was spent anyway, taking a 7MM Mag in the neck and another through the neck and out the hinder; how he ran ANYWHERE is a mystery to us both.
Brian lives in the area, so Keith and his buddy shared the camper Friday through Sunday while I visited with Brian and Sarah, and I stayed in the woods Thursday for setting our stands and Monday to today. All in all, it was an incredible hunt on public land, Keith really knows his stuff. We met a really cool young man who was holding down the last 600 yards down from me, and made a new friend. Ken is in High School, but like so many Wisconsin young men this week was off school and in the woods with his climber at dawn, out at dark. Between the two of us, me in my ladder stand WAY up on top, and he in his climber, anyone starting down that stretch turned back and went elsewhere; it was perfect.
Keith and Brian hunted Oak Ridges, and saw lots of deer. All in all, we had a great trip and filled up the freezer, so Slamr can breath easy that there will be a personal cooler or two of venison hamburger this year.
What's even better is we have the rest of season to hunt, Sue and I in a blind here at home, and some herd control tags out on Plum Creek land near here. Black powder, then the Anterless season, too.

Location: NW WI | North of Star Lake, WI (a little north of Irving & Ballard) our camp of 16 hunters shot ZERO...yes ZERO deer. FOr the 1st time in 30+ years of this camp being together, we packed up and went home meatless. I had a doe tag and my 13 yr old had a doe tag......didn't see a deer. In all our group saw 5 doe, and one guy saw three of them. Pre-scouting....2 gal. of corn.....didn't matter.
My son is jinxed....can't get a 'ski and can't even have a year old doe go in front of him to take a shot at!
Might be more wolves in zone 35 than deer based on the number of wolf tracks we saw. |

Location: Janesville | I was up to lake tomahawk area and saw no deer Hunted for 5days just south of lake tomahawk then moved up to vandercook north for minocqua. I will be giving up deer hunting .Just musky fishing next year. DNR better get there count right. Glad I do not have young kids to get started in deer hunting how you going to get them intrested sitting inthe woods all day and not seeing deer. |

Gotta place for my kid and I to hunt Sat and Sun? We'd just put up a ground blind. We want to go, but the only place for us to go locally is questionable at best for a chance at one. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Then I suggest you watch the registration totals for each county and registration station, especially the one you hunted, to see if your experience matches the majority. Between Boulder Junction and Lake Tomahawk...actually there were two just outside of Lake Tom, one a really nice buck.. Tuesday. I bet I saw at least a half dozen fresh car kills, I remember that because Keith and I were discussing the number of car kills on the radios.

| Just got back from the great northwoods and a very long week of deer hunting. Me and my boy hunted hard every day and managed to see4 deer 3of them by the road and 1 in the woods by a cabin. We looked every where for deer, swamps, thick blowdown areas, river bottoms and everywhere in between. Unless your on private land the deer just aren't there. We never seen a track on Friday morning. Last year we seen quite a few deer in this area. We didn't see anyone else hunting this area either, now I know why no deer. |

Big factor in our lack of success this season has been the high winds!
When it is this windy, deer hold tight, because:
1) the wind has got everything moving. Their eyesight is impared
2) the wind has got the noise up to a deafening roar. They might as well be deaf
3) the wind is whipping scent past their noses so fast, that they cannot process what they are smelling
So, If your 3 biggest defences are of little-to-no use, you stay in bed and ride it out.
The good folks that hunt the neighboring property and us conducted a huge drive Thursday morning. One doe was kicked up, and Ray said he "pretty much had to step on her to get her to go". It had no idea he was there until he was close enough to almost kick her.
Muzzleloader season is upon us! One shot-one kill!

makes for a great first year for a 12-yr-old who just finished hunter safety this fall!
i'm planning to get out for a few days in December once muskie season is closed. heading down to the CWD areas by Dodgeville with extended seasons.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | We ended up with 7 for 3 hunters, all on public land. Passed a few, and certainly missed a few opportunities. We had a blast, and all of us are looking forward to black powder and antlerless over the next couple weeks.
Keith and Brian harvested all their deer hunting feeding areas on ridge tops, I hunted funnels in the bottoms between the ridges and the bedding areas. The one constant was the deer were definitely in the thick stuff for us. The rut should be winding down now and with the hunters out of the woods for the most part the deer should get back to near normal patterns.

Location: Watertown, MN | Mixed reviews on this years hunt, up till thurs Norm Wild saw 3 little bucks, and his Father-in-law shot a nice 8, talked to many people who did not see deer opening weekend. Friday made drives with friend saw couple bucks, one nice buck but just could not get a good shot off. Get message Norm is in Madison hospital, complication from back surgery, he was hopefully heading home today after a saturday surgery. Hope to hunt for anterless only season. Did harvest a nubbin with my son this moring, only 2 deer I saw this season while not driving deer, truck or wheeler. Talked Norm's in-law who processes deer, sounds like some did okay, while others numbers were way down, curoius to see final harvest.

| Well, after a slow first weekend, things picked up on Turkey day. Nothing in the morning, but after watching the Packer game, I headed out at 3:00 PM with Lauren to sit in the two person ladder stand. She will be old enough to hunt next year, and she likes getting out with her dad. I told her she was responsible for her half of the area, and I would watch my half. ABout 3:50, she tapped my leg, and slowly pointe to the thicket to her right. I saw a deer making it's way to the trail, and got the BAR ready. When a big doe stepped into the shooting lane, I ka-poched her right behind the shoulder at 40 yards. She bolted into the thicket behind us, followed by a smaller deer, and all went silent. We waited 10 minutes, got out of the stand, and went to where the deer had been shot. No blood right away, but Lauren found the trail, and about 30 yards away, she found the doe, assuming ambient temperature. Lauren was pumped, as she did everything except pull the trigger, and gut out the deer by herself. I helped with that, and she dragged the deer to the house with the ATV. I can't wait til next year to hunt with her for real.
The next day, Friday, Eric and I hunted, without success, in the AM. I went out early in the PM, and he followed around 3:00PM. Without his rifle, he wanted to sit with me. I said OK, and we sat quietly, watching and hoping for deer. Around 3:30, he whispered he wanted to know how to use the grunt call. I got mine out, and gave a couple short, low grunts. I told him I use it sparingly, and put it away. We seetled to watch for deer, and not more than 5 minutes, we both saw a deer out in front through the thick stuff. I immediately saw antlers, and motioned for Eric to get ready. He had the BAR up, and when the deer stood broadside in an opening at 50 yards, the Browning barked. The deer kicked, ran forward, then turned and went back the way it came from. A minute later, I heard it flopping on the Adams County turf. Eric was shaking uncontrollably, telling me "It's a Buck, Dad. I got a buck!" We got down, found hair, and the blood trail. Following it, we came around a pine thicket, and there it was! A nice 8 pointer! Quite a nice first Buck for the boy! I was real proud of Eric, and it was fun to watch this take place.
I've been hunting my 8 acres next to the Mom-in-Law's place in Adams County for the past dozen years, but usually after Turkey Day, never the whole season. I've taken 1 small buck, and about 10 does in that time frame. Never hunted the whole season until this year. I think I will hunt it the whole season again next year. I had one of the better hunts ever this year!

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Very mixed reviews from lots of people all over the state. I had my kids in the best spots on my new land and we only saw a few does and yearlings the opener. I went back up for Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the family and we had very few deer on the move. Both kids passed up deer looking for a good one so I can call that a good hunt.
Getting a nice buck is not easy but with perfect conditions and good controled land it is possible each year. Public is good if you go into huge detail checking out the land. Some public is ok and some is very good. I would bet 80% of the public land is only good for the opener and if others are pushing deer around. Without hunters pushing deer and snooping around public land can be dead. Doing your homework and getting into the thickest, nastiest parts of the public land will get you your deer. Doing your research and getting to the good stuff is where it's at on public land. I used to do it all the time the second weekend of deer hunting every season and always scored a deer or two.
Now with kids I try to teach them all the variables and explain why some days the deer will not move during the daylight. Every morning the tracks are all over our foot prints from the night before and each day we only see a deer or two. The biggest problem we had was all the corn was still up all around my 50 acres of land. 60 acres of corn can hide lots of deer. The other was the wind. Wow was it windy. There is always next year. Bow hunting is where it's at anyway!!!
Congrats on those who scored. Expecially the fathers who took out the kids. Keep our kids intersted in the outdoors and teach them the way it should be.

Location: north central wisconsin | Fun and safe 2007 rifle season in the books here. Fishing and hunting were fair to us last week and it plain stinks to see the -too short- fall season end. Though deer numbers were down by us, we saw a much better buck to doe ratio where we hunt with overall numbers probably closer to healthy heard goals than the burgeoning numbers of recent years indicating our years of high doe harvests are paying off. Slightly misjudged this guy in the brush as a bigger deer, but kid seemed happy enough with it regardless. Had a better pic or two in the field, but couldn't leave her out of the fun.

| Dang...bad year for me. Never squeezed the trigger, and to be honest, never saw a set of horns 
(First time in a loooong time, so such is life) Out in the dark and back in the dark. I sat and I still hunted. Strange year for me...and I won't "play the wolf card", although from the last week of bow, through gun, I heard more than I have in a long time.
BUT...in three days I'm leaving for a muzzle loader hunt for mulies and hope to pop a good one??? |

| Nice pics, cool stories. No hunting for me this year. Locals haven't shot many bucks that I know of. One buddy told me he saw 48 does and not a single horn.
The exception is a kid I know; he and his friend were bow hunting and his friend shot "Twin Towers", a picture perfect 20 point. Really, 20 points, I saw the pic up at the local hardware store. Hard to believe I know, so call 'em: Adams Hardware, 269-624-3531.
Great luck to all and be safe out there. Lots of idiots, one time I watched two trespasser bozos, each on a corner of a 8-10 acre field, open up on a small buck that ran between them. 10 shots from the two 870's. At one point the deer was right smack between them and still they both blasted away. As I kicked them off the property I asked if they liked the sound of the lead flying by. One says, "Oh, yea. That was dumb, I guess." Yep. Almost as dumb as an a-hole I saw in my binocs one early morning. He was looking at me, too, but thru his scope. Nothing like having a rifle pointed at you to really wake you up. That was the last time I hunted state land during rifle season. Enough........ |

My hunting partner Wayne and I enjoy hunting out of the same blind because we like to have the opportunity to spend some time togther and have more than a few laughs.Weve shot many a nice buck over the years from this location so now its more about just enjoying the outdoors.On Sunday afternoon I harvested a nice 8 pointer with a 17" spread. |

Actually the deer are yarded up around here and it's been easy pickins with the bow. Got two more does last weekend to fill up those extra tags for the "earn a buck" next season. Lots of venison for the ice shack this season. |
