In general or more specifically, what are your must have trolling lures for Green Bay. I just started hitting it out there and can use some lure tips. Colors would be helpful. Most of my stuff is great for casting, not so great for trolling. I do have plenty of DR's and Jakes.

Well, you are talking big water. That is where our stuff is generaly used. I just put my wife on a 51 incher on big water last week. Green Bay has a diverse forage base. Sucker, Whitefish, Walleye, Perch Salmon, trout, Alewife, Pike, Bass etc etc etc. If it were me and it will be some day ha ha . I would plan on at least two fishermen in the boat. I would run Planer boards and down rods. I would run at least one deep lure like a 10 inch Hooker or 12 inch Talonz Deepthreat, Maybe a Legend plow. On the deep rods I would be running deep forage colors like Perch ,whitefish, trout. Out on the boards I would be running Bass patterns, Walleye, Alewife /shad in Grandmas, Jakes, Talonz Slashers, Mordas Minnows, Lokes, NILS Masters, Believers etc etc. I would stay with 7 to 12 inch lures and use your electronics to locate big marks near forage clouds. Probably no need to venture far from the river mouths. Fox being a good place to start. Get a good bottom contour map and look for places where Breaks are steep and work those edges. Kingfisher

Here is what has worked for us at the shop (baits first):
1. Big Games (after the mod you saw in MH mag. we have done this for 3 years now).
2. Mordas minnows (run them on the outside of the spread, and let them bounce)
3. Grandmas

Colors:
If they aint biting on white or clown, they are going on firetiger/ gaudy patterns. if they are not going on that, black perch. Stop by the shop on your way, and we can help you.

Thers a few woodies that have done very well fishing there. try a coachdog pattern and strawberry. also the new firebass in 6 1/4 having been quietly popping fish. boards at slower speeds now have proven to do very well.

Really don’t spend time out there (don’t ask me why), but I have a lot of friends that do. Chuck is right, get a bunch of cranky Nitro’s in assorted colors. In general smaller baits tend to do better out there than larger baits. It doesn’t make sense I know.

hmmm chuck, why would you say that??? HEHEHE. Crankys really rock, and just the past two days were the only thing going for us there. Patiently awaiting the jointed version.... That said, GB is so much different than other waters I've trolled, causing me to spend alot more money on trolling lures, at least for the fall bite. Things that you'd think would be spot on, sometimes are not(talking size here). Stop in at one of the local bait shops. I really like the Sportsmans warehouse in Depere and the one that Rob works at in Appleton.

Those who like the Cranky Nitros....Went to their site and found they offer in different kinds of wood with different bouencies..
"...The Cranky Nitro is available in Cedar, Pine or hardwood. The Cedar version is light and runs 2 to 4 feet deep. It rises very fast and has the most tail kick. The hardwood version (Slow Rise) is heavier, rises slower, has more belly roll, and runs 5 to 10 feet deep. The Pine version (Tweener) runs 4 to 8 feet deep. The action is in between the other two versions.

1. Those who like these, which wood are you using?
2. Do you like the 6, 7, or 8" models?

Thanks...

Hose Baits are very nice, I'll third that sentiment. He makes a shad bait like the Parrywinkle, a Hutchings-type bait that thumps like you would not believe and a "heavy duty" Tuff Shad design that is built for a lifetime and runs with more vibration than the original. They'll catch fish in any body of water especially in big waters like Green Bay that has such a diversity of forage.

Cowboyhannah - I could probably answer your question. For the most part it is the cedar version in the 7 inch length with some pine and 8" ones mixed in. Most of the time your baits need to be 10' deep or shallower all the way to as shallow as 1' for the Bay. If not just the Bay there are guys that run all 3, the cedar being the most popular. I have only been making the pine one for a year and the 6" is new for late 2007.
