Identifying virtual friends on the water - Directo

Subject: Identifying virtual friends on the water - Directo

This weekend I had an awesome time fishing and taking in an evening at the local ballet with several people who frequent this board. One I had seen on the water and the others I only "knew" by way of this virtual community.

When we got on the water we bumped into a few boats of people who reconized the boat we were in and got a chance to put some names with faces. (now that I have met him, My money is on Muskie_Illini over Slamr - LOL) I only found out after getting home and reading this board that one of the boats we didn't recognize was Matt Collins new rig.

There are plenty of boats out on the lakes I fish that have people in them from this board that I have yet to meet and I will likely pass them out on the water soon. Wouldn't it be cool if there were a way to put the names with the faces before we get out on the water? Without it we'll keep passing eachother on the water and never meet. What if Worrall and company were to create a more robust member profile capability where we could post a picture of ourselves and/or boat?

Just a thought.

BTW - if you see a red on white hull Triton TR19 bass boat w/ 150 Opti on the fox chain the next two weekends, feel free to flag me down and say hello.

How about a MuskyFirst sticker for the boats? Something that we can easily recognize from a distance. I suggest a black musky with a white #1 on it.[]

White logo, 17" long, and the same width for all text. $10 including shipping. Can add your board name for an additional amount, will be seeing the graphics house tomorrow. What do you think??? Picture tomorrow....[]

I'm in for both the db and a sticker....as long as my POS boat is GOOD ENOUGH for you that is.

Steve, 17 inches will show up on satellite! Might fit on something smaller - 4-5 inches with a big "MF" and under it "MuskieFirst" or something; but then again, muskie people never did do anything small! m

That big sticker wont mess up the paint job on my Camo painted Jon boat will it. LOL hey it floats. I think that is a great idea. By the way while all you guys were on here complaining about the crowds on Lake X. I was there ( on Thursday ) and boated my first musky. It was a 42 incher.

If any of you guys are out and see a camo jon boat, with a camo motor, its me. I am not Duck hunting, so come on over and say hi. My name is Jared and this is my first year musky fishing. I would love to meet you guys.

Thanks, Eck

Welcome Eck and congrats on your first muskie![]

The sticker Worrall is refering too is not too large. and would be a great way to ID all the folks on site.

Maybe if I had one, you all would be able to find me on the water.[;)] []

Jason, Worrall, et al

Does this mean no upgraded user directory with pictures and robust profile? Only stickers?

Sworrell: My vote goes for the database. I think that the stickers won't work as well. The stickers will be to small, even if you make them twice as large. From a distance, like across the bay, you wouldn't be able to see just what the sticker says. So now you have a lot of boats motoring up to close just to see if someone has a muskiefirst sticker on their boat. Could create a lot of anger from other boaters who don't have any idea why you're coming so close to their boat and interrupting their fishing. Just a thought.

I have a light grey hull and white would not show up well, you would need to make some stickers with say black or other colors.

I think this is a great idea. I was out sat and sun and couln't help but wonder how many others from this board were there too. A way to ID people without sounding like an idiot would be cool. I think I was parked next to Jason Smith at the ramp(chevy? truck lots of stickers on the windows and a tuffy trailer?) but who knows? By the way I'm in a white suburban with an all white sea nymph w/blue carpeting and muskies inc. and musky hunter stickers on the transom. If you see me say hi. I'll also be out tomorow (wed)

I think one of the ideas at work here is to start to associate the screen names of those individuals on the board with people you meet on the water.

Why yes JHoffman, it is ALL you said! A cult + secret fraternity...a frenzied group of boat stickered dummies that surf the lakes in ritualistic circles bashing all non stickered boats, especially those w/ families!!! Why be friendly when you can purchase a sticker, slap it on your boat + treat others like idiots?!!! Now get that check in the mail.... [:((] [:(] [:((] [:(]
Actually I think it is an idea + if peeps want to do the sticker then it is available...if they try to force this on you personally please contact your DNA agent....hope your cornflakes taste better in the morning! [:sun:]

Gee, Mr Hoffman, there was never any mention of HAVING to have a sticker. Seems to me the guys want to be able to recognise another MuskieFIRST member on the water because we have talked together in cyberspace all winter, and it would be good to meet some of the anglers and friends from the board.

I suppose I could drive around the lake, and ask every muskie angler out there if he has a board name or visits MuskieFIRST, but that seems to be a bit too much. Do you have any ideas?[]

I don't understand how anyone could think of this sticker idea as a negative thing. If someone doesn't want to do it just don't do it. I know it is always nice to swap notes on the lake with someone who is also a Musky fisherman. I know I am going to order one as soon as I have my boat. I have to say this is a pretty friendly board, nobody is keeping huge secrets or playing lockjaw on the idea of sharing helpful tips for lakes. A sticker is a great and classy way to swap some notes on the lake with someone you know through this board (cult..lol). A little brotherhood of musky fishing is not a negative thing.

Mr. Worral, since Ralph brought up the Sticker Nazi, "No Sticker for Mr. Hoffman 1 YEAR! " Sorry I had to.

Troops,
Mother will put an end to this rough housing !!!

First - The sticker idea is solid . It is an easy and
well established practice by many anglers to
proudly display product loyalty and to have a
little fun.

Second - Of course you can't see it from across the lake
or bay, thats to far! and nobody wants to have
boats motoring up to them.
Solution - buy a set of cheap BINOCULARS !!
Perfect for scouting spots on the lake for
other anglers and BIKINI clad babes [:praise:]
(sorry ladies, but facts are facts) []

Finally - If you ain't got Binos in the boat, you ain't
got all the fishin' tools. Not to mention the
safety factor-waves/storms/What the ? HAIL
[:blackeye:] or identifying a disabled boat or M.O.B. !!

So what if I get out there and see all you guys with stickers, but I cant remember the secret handshake??? Then what. Will the sticker police take my sticker away from me?

I like this idea of all you guys looking around for stickers while I am fishing. You can leave your rods at home. This sticker stuff sounds a lot more fun than catching those pesky musky anyway.

Why dont we make them magnetic so we can all trade throughout the day. That would be confusing. We could get on muskie central board and start a rumor that they passed a new law you cant fish " a certain lake" without a sticker. Now that is a good idea. well the fishing sucks there now anyway. see ya on the water. sticker mania has set in. ECK.

Some of you guys are making more out of this sticker thing than what it is. Here is my thought as to why some folks like the idea. ITS AN ICE BREAKER!! Admit it that we are a secretive group and when someone is approaching our boat do we smile and wave hi or keep casting with some icy stares....most of the time the latter!

BUT, you have a sticker that shows you both have common "Ground" then it helps break the ice. You pull close ask "hey your on the board? whats your name?" This opens up the conversation and can lead to hows the bite etc....

Just helps to break the ice. When a stranger pulls up and he is the 30th boat that has asked "are they biting?" are you all warm and fuzzy??

Is it easier to start a conversation with a hot blonde that is by herself or has a cute little puppy with her......Your not a threat to her when you start off talking about the puppy....same deal.

My two cents...

I agree with Painter, nice ice breaker. However it would ALSO be nice to have a more robust user directory with pictures. There are a few very suspect individuals (slamr?) who people may not want to meet. LOL If we all had access to a picture of Slamr and his rig we could know what to watch out for instead of being drawn in by the sticker. [:p]

Thanks Lunchables....there goes my Piracy plans for the weekend. And get off of M1st crew about the DB, I bug Sworral and Jason about that constantly. I agree, the sticker will be a good way for us to know who we SHOULD and SHOULDNT be talking to....someone drives up to me with a sticker from one of the "other boards", I'm launching my hook-less jerko at them!!!! I will be easy to spot: black boat with sharks mouth. Oh, I'll have a M1st sticker on the side tooo.

I agree totally with C.Painter, the sticker isn't going to make you part of a elite club or anything it's just a sticker and if someone doesn't want it they just shouldn't order one, that simple. I also agree about the hot blonde thing, maybe I should have a puppy club sticker on my boat too. LOL... All the sticker is doing is breaking the ice, I know when someone is pulling close to me I'm thinking they are gonna try to cut in on my path and I usually give them the general idea of how I will react. If I saw the sticker I would enjoy exchanging some notes and meeting a new friend on the lake. I am also usually not too shy about sharing info on spots.
* I do want to know if the personalized ones with our names will be available before I order my sticker.
* Also I was wondering if anyone was also thinking of putting their sticker on their windshields? Any problems with that idea?

I think I'm gonna have me matey sew me up a flag! Black, with white lettering. Then I can run her up the mizzen........

er, attach it to the top of the antenna. Should be able to see that quite a ways. Maybe a MF hand towel would work as a flag? Any plans for a towel, Steve?

I don't think anyone was bashing. It's pretty much tongue in cheek. Sorry you took it the wrong way.

I think Corey expressed it correctly. Now I know how he always got the hot babes. He looked for the puppies!![]

DB of boats & members is good idea- but the sticker idea sucks. Who could read it, f.ex. as I or Jason zip by at +60mph. I already have ESOX Maniac on the transom. A MF streamer type pennant would be much better. Kinda like the old Viking long ship pennant's. If the MF pennant is flying, it's safe to either try and catch up, flag me down or stop & chat. Plus for those that are wind direction impaired, they're great solution, i.e., if you have to put up the sails, boat drift, or are concerned about your fishing partner's diet the night before.... I think the Database with Boats & Pictures is good. I also think the sticker is good, but it's up to the person. I'll be doing around 60mph too, but if passing in a channel or near by fishing it's a good marker.

All those who know where lake X is raise your hands. There's your fraternity. Its turning into a board of inside jokes that only they know. That's not to say that this isn't a great board. You still can ask ? and get them answered and post to other peoples ? .I don't know if anon was kidding or not but I had the same thought the other day.

Ok, everyone, it was fun talking about this issue. The database will be a reality in time, as we finish the rest of the interactive structure Zach has planned. The MuskieFIRST stickers are available for those who want them.

The concept was very straightforward:
Be able to identify another angler out on the water, at the landing, or elsewhere in towing the rig, and say hello.

Those who found it necessary to take the idea elsewhere are the reason the thread is locked.
