I can buy an Avid 6'9" heavy for $150 or an Okuma heavy for $70. Is it really worth the difference or am I just buying a name?

I can't speak for the Avid but the Okuma sports a lifetime warranty. If you can get it for $70... that's a deal.

I've had an Okuma H for a couple weeks now, and I love it. A great rod. The lifetime warranty that Mark mentions just makes it even better at that price.

Avids are nice rods, but not worth the money in my opinion.

Between those two, I'd go with Okuma

One thing to consider is in the event of the rod unfortunately breaking, how is it taken care of? Do you have to send it back to the factory or can it be replaced "over the counter". If you can do it over the counter, all you would need to do is take it to a dealer that carries that line of rods. If you have to send it back to the factory, there are shipping charges and possibly a replacement charge. Not all "Life Time" warranties are TRUE life time warranties.

There were just a few good rod companies out there years ago. Today, you have a plethora of choices of quality sticks.

I have several Okumas, good rods for sure. As to the 'buying a name' deal; sure you are. And that's with either brand.

Gander Guide Series rods are a great rod for the price($90) Gander uses Fig-Rig blanks so they are of high quality. If you are looking for somewhat affordable with a great warranty try the Shimano Compre, lifetime over the counter and one helll of a rod couple either with an Abu Record reel and you are all set for any musky. Good luck!

The current Avid line is being dicontinued. Sportsmans for example only pay $130 for a 7'6" Avid Muskie Rod and retails what $230??. All walleye and bass Avids are currently marked to $100, seems $150 the going rate for Muskie sticks.
