I will be heading up to Vermillion for the first time and fishing Oct 18th-21st.

I know that the BEST thing I could do would be to hire a guide for the first day to learn my way around, but I am not sure I can afford the extra $$$ to do that.

That being said, do guides ever have a rate to come with you in your own boat for a couple hours just to give you an idea as to where to go???? Would this rate be cheaper since you are using your own boat and gas??

Just wondering if something like this exists. Thanks for any information you may have.

it can't hurt to ask.
i do know of at least one guide (not on Vermilion) who will give a short "lake tour" in the boat and mark a couple likely spots on your map for a smaller fee than his regular rate.
some resort owners offer to do this as well.

Where are you staying?
Do you know the bouy's are out?
Send me an e-mail and maybe we can talk/meet. Which end are you fishing?

What is the closest access point (public or pay) to Ely Island near Tower? I have a job up there this week and we are taking a 16' tin boat out there and I am nervous about a long run in the boat with gear.
Thanks!

B420,

McKinley Park Campground. The campground is closed, but from what I understand, the ramp remains open.

You can use Hoo Doo Point launch. Stay away from the obvious points on the way out of Pike Bay and you will be fine.
