Location: Eden Prairie & Pine Island | Hello, Wallytap, and welcome. Like all addictions, the first and most important step you can take to overcoming it is to admit you have a problem...of course, you didn't necessarily say you wanted to kick this addiction, in which case, did I mention that I make and sell Muskie lures...? |

| I have bought exactly three lures all season. Two of the three were the same one, to replace one that the $^%& pike destroyed up on Eagle.
I have an entire 7915 box full of nothing but rubber. Most of them have never been in the water.
I have something like 27 phantoms. Again, most of them have been thrown once if that.
I have God knows how many bucktails, some are still in the package.
I admit that its kind of cool having all that stuff, but its way more stupid than anything. $15 - $20 a bait, I probably got $3000 tied up in lures that I don't need. If I was running a guide service I still wouldn't need them all. And I probably never will, because whatever it is, when I pack for a trip, I pack the baits that have seen action.
Wallytrap, I was like you. Every time I saw some hot new bait, I was sure it was going to be my ticket to lots of big muskies. But a funny thing happened along the way -- it gets harder and harder to throw a new, shiny, and yet unproven lure when it means leaving one in the box that has teeth marks on it.
So if you want to collect lures, collect lures, and accept that it's a hobby of yours. But if you think more lures is going to = more fish in the boat, save your money.

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Hi, my name is Andrew Golden, I'm a recovernig MuskyBaitAholic. I kicked the habit when the economy went bad in my work sector, and I sold most of my stuff to afford things like gas and rent. I went from 400 lures down to what I now have, which is just over 100 or so. Of that hundred, I probably use about 90% of them in any given year. Some of the other 10% are things like bucktails and/or spinnerbaits in colors I just dont use anymore, but are ugly and/or torn up and no one would want them anyways. Every year I look at all my baits in total, and whatever I didnt use, or really didnt like when I did use it, gets sold or given way (giving lures away increases overall muskie karma).
I dont collet lures, I cast lures. I beat them mercilessly until they no longer work, then I replace that lure. I'm not that big a believer in color, so I dont buy 8 colors of a bait I like, or caught/saw a fish on.
I dont have the coin to fill tackleboxes with lures that will either collect dust or I will soley fondle in the winter months. I'd rather view my dirty dozen of beat on lures that I use regularly and smile at the memories of fish gone by.
But....I have 23 fishing rods, and 30+ reels. Is that a problem? |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i started a basic 5 bait guy .... the addiction has come late .... i've got enough cowgirls to open a brothel in vegas, bulldawgs, raiders and ddd' oh my ... every color known to man and then some ... calcutta collection that is starting a professional edge rod collection ... glad i don't own multiple colors of topwaters ... so i have almost one of every one made .... in black ... it ain't the color, but i like lots of various actions to select from.
you aren't crazy ... just buy lots of what the fish like and then be prepared for everything color-wise.
i never believed in color .... then i went to eagle lake LOL
yes, i did contradict myself ... i know i'm crazy and that's the difference

| Slamr, I'm rotten for rods, only it's flyrods. Bamboo to be specific. Well, I"m pretty rotten for 'ski rods, too. Though this year due to an accident, I lost several (thousand dollars worth) of rods and reels.
Baits, I'm not a real stickler about. I might have a hundred and fifty or so. Some of those, however are more collector type things than use. Some old baits that haven't seen the water in years. I have my standards in my pink foam box. (Yes, I'm too cheap to buy a real box, so I've built several out of 1.5" foam insulation, Pink, too.)
So, yeah, I've a few baits I don't throw, and some I never will. Some others that I do, some that I wish I hadn't. |

Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | Hi Stan my name is Bruce or Netman and I'm a Muskeybaitaholic:
My collection addiction started 12 years ago when I turned 40 and received rod & reel set-up and a dozen baits for my birthday. Since that time I've been to as many sales, bait swaps, rumages and close-outs as most men would accomplish in a lifetime. I can't seem to pass-up a Gander Mountain 1/2 price bin or a Sportsmans Warehouse red tag sale. BAITS JUST KEEP SHOWING UP IN MY MULTIPLE TACKLE BOXES!!!!
Not only have I been seen in the muskie isles of these stores but now my addiction has turned to the salmon isle too.....
IS THERE ANY HELP OUT THERE FOR US?????
Please send me any coupons or sale notices you might find,
Bruce (Netman) |

Location: Brookfield | I had this problem until I figured out what baits work for me on certain lakes. I dumped the majority of the rest on ebay and stocked up bigtime on the ones that seem to work best. Of coarse it took me a couple years and I dont want to mention the $$$$$$$$$ spent to get to this point. But when something new comes out I still have to get a couple to try them out, If they suck off to ebay with them. So dont sweat it, eventually this phase will pass and I will be able to score your stuff on ebay LOL.
And to you guys that say color isnt that important, please keep thinking that way, more fish for me to CPR.

| Relax; if you have a lot of lures and go fishing your fine, maybe even a collecter. If you go to meetings about having too many lures, your an addict and have a real problem. Don't guess that helps much but it does give you a line to watch for and cross if you can't help it. I'd babble some more but there's a sale at the bait shop and I want to get there befor all the good stuff is gone.
Be a good American; spend all your money on American made lures.

| First off it's not an addiction unless you are trying to stop!
I have a serious problem with musky baits as well. 2 monster LakeWood Boxes, 1 big Plano musky box, 1 box with over 200 bucktails in it, and about 10 Plano 3700 filled with musky baits. One of the LakeWoods is basically filled with Bulldogs and I have only thrown Bulldogs about 10 total casts! I hardly ever throw bucktails, yet I have over 200 of them!
And the real sad part is that I am so busy during the summer that I only get to fish musky 9 or 10 days a year.
Last winter I picked up 83 different musky baits and so far only about 3 of them have gotten wet! |

Location: WI | I try to limit it to only one or two per paycheck. I figured I could increase that by recycling aluminum cans and that has helped to some extent. I'm happy that I bought a ton of lures 10 years ago cuz now they all cost a lot more!
Lately I've just been filling a few holes like trolling baits instead of only buying jerkbaits and topwaters. But man, there's a nice looking Bobbie and Cowgirl at the local shop... I just have to sell a couple useless items like my tv and then I can buy more!
Next year I'm going to focus on getting a few guides instead of more lures. |

Location: Oregon | I think part of the problem is that most of us work too much so we try to compensate for lost fishing time by shopping for fishing tackle. I'm sitting at work right now and as a break I reading about fishing!!

Location: Muskegon Michigan | Hi Stan and the rest of you muskybaitaholics, Im a bait maker want some candy??ha ha ha ha . Twitch baits buy two get one free we take payments ha ha ha . I was a bait aholic now I just build my own its a gas ha ha ha . How about a lure kit???
Seriously , it can really be an expensive habit. I spend at least 300.00 per year on lures that I dont build like Top water and Bull Dawgs. Here is a tip to save boo coo bucks fishing muskies.
We bought a very very small car (chevy Aveo) mini mini van. 5 spd stick. With this little car pull a 1448 Jonboat with a motor under 9.9 hp. The little jon can be turned into a Musky fishing machine. Put rollers on the trailor so you dont have to back the Aveo into the water I can pull this little boat 3 hours in any direction to fish most of my local Musky lakes here in Michigan and back for 20 bucks. I can troll or cast two people all day on 3 gallons of gas for the boat. I have a 36 pound bow mount, Lowrance 4800 mapping gps and lowrance x-71 for electronics. It is a precision edge trolling machine.
This saved us over 5 thousand dollars last year when we took the Muskies inc Womens division and placed me in 2nd in the mens. We caught 226 fish between us 103 for the wife and 123 for me. We only used our 18 footer on Lake St. Clair for 30 days on the water. The savings in gas alone was staggering. Granted we could not fish big water with it. but if the weather was good we could fish 1200 acre lakes no problem. 10 gallons per day with the 18 footer versus 3 for the jon. The biggest savings is in the tow vehicle. One ton van 12 mph per gal at best. The Aveo 30 pulling the boat. 35 to 38 without. This allowed us to fish as much as we wanted and we soon got used to the little boat and prefer it now on small lakes. It also does not need its own insurance policy, goes on the homeowners.
These are the things a baitaholic does to continue his addiction.
