| Last weekend, we had some suckers out, muskies followed baits, then looked at the suckers. And looked, and looked and looked, with no eating. Wondering what you guys all do when the fish come to the boat and just stare at the suckers, even when they're lively ones!

| I've had this happen quite a bit with suckers. I asked Smitty from Smitty baits about this one time and he told me to entice the fish into striking by giving the sucker a few quick pops or jerks. Later on that year I had a fish following the sucker, we were drifting a weedline in the wind, for a good 5 minutes + I finally thought I'd give her a shot. I picked up the sucker rod, reeled up the slack, and gave her a quick sharp rip. The musky couldn't resist and ate it right then and there. The only problem I have with this triggering move is that sometimes you could lose a sucker depending on how well she's rigged up. |

| If I am in deep water I let some line out so movement in the boat doesn't spook the fish, then when the sucker is out of sight, assuming that if you can't see the muskie then it can't see you I give it a few twitches like it wants to escape and hopefully the muskie won't want to loose a meal. If I am in shollow water it is usually on a bobber and I just do the same thing. Give the muskie a little privacy and maybe it will eat. I had a fish following like that for 20 minutes once and when it finally decided to take I ripped ythe sucker right out of its mouth but it was so worked up by that time it came back and grabbed it again. and again the came out of its mouth and again it came back for it. My quick set was so mangled that I couldn't even use it. |

| It's a pretty cool way to float them actually. (Buy the water balloon sized balloons) Blow them up and just tie the balloon around the line. You can slide the line through the knot when its wet pretty easily to adjust the depth. You can control the bouyancy by how much you blow up the balloon. They cost next to nothing, and you get to pick what color you like.

| LOL John! It kind of depends -- the pink ones go well with my pumps and matching purse, but the blue ones match my favorite bra.
The land? The land is MINE, ALLLLL MINE!!! Now I just gotta figure out what to do with it!

Jig it, move it around, drop it straight to the bottom (if not under a bobber), lift it to the surface and let it splash around.
I was with Slimm on a Rhinelander area lake a few falls ago and I jigged one up after it just sat their following the sucker. Man, did I have to work to get that one too hit.
Chuck worked his tail off for that fish! Up down over under sideways etc.. |
