I'm considering buying a new rod/reel to use for sucker fishing and trolling too. What do people prefer for inexpensive combos? Probaly a fiberglass rod, and a reel with a line counter. I drop the big coin on my casting rigs. I can't justify spending $$$ on a rig that will be fixed in a rod holder 99% of the time.
Any good deals out there?

Cabelas has a couple of combos available. I am buying their Gold edition this year for new trolling rods. You get a choice of about 6 different rods and a couple different reels to. They range from $79.00 to $109.00 depending on the reel choice. I am going with the 8'6" planer board rod, it is basically a heavy walleye style rod. It should be more than enough for trolling musky but I question the hookset if used for sucker fishing. I was using my 6'6" shimano rods for trolling but they are a little stiffer than I like for trolling, so they are now sucker rods. The shimano rods were $69.00 at Smokies musky shop, you could pick-up a used reel on ebay and possibly get away with a rig for just over $100.00.
Check out cabelas web site, type in trolling combos and check out what they have to offer. It might be just what you are looking for.

Bass Pro Shops Cat Maxx rod 7' 6" 1-5 oz. Great trolling rod and would also be a super sucker rod. You'll be hard pressed to beat the price, $50.

Don't buy a cheap reel for trolling or sucker fishing. You will regret it

A buddy just last weekend lost a good fish on a sucker when a cheap linecounter blew up on the hookset.

You can get plenty of decent trolling/sucker rods pretty cheap, but don't skimp on the reel.

I've been using the Magda series from Okuma for salmon and muskies this year, without fail. Pretty cheap in the $40 range. Nice drags, lots of line capacity, and reliable.

For rods I still prefer the TDRs for trolling, and am yet to find a strong but cheap fiberglass/graphite composite for muskies that I like.

catfishing rods make GREAT trolling and sucker rods for the money.
TDR's are too light for sucker hooksets if you ask me.
Get some decent linecounter reels so you can know the exact depth your suckers are running as well as use them for trolling set ups.

There is a difference between cheap and inexpensive. The Magdas are inexpensive.

i like the Shimano TDRs for trolling. inexpensive, long, good action and power.

i've been using Berkeley Lightning rods for suckers and they work great. enough power to set the hook, i don't worry about shattering a graphite rod in the cold, and again, inexpensive. they're serviceable as extra trolling rods as well.

all are rigged up with Daiwa LC47s. great reel: loud clicker, powerful drag, good handles.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I've got it pretty well figured out.
Magda with a cheapo stiff rod.
