Does anyone add anything to there fuel once it starts getting cold during late fall fishing? I am running a 2 stroke carbed motor (main and kicker) I will be fishing until ice up and am wondering what works well for preventative maintance? Thanks

If you are using it often enough, and it is stored cold, I don't think you would have too much of an issue with water condensation. But...if anything, run Stabil....that will at least make sure that when you are done for the year, your carbs should be safe from gumming up.

Not sure if I would run any isopropyl/ de-icer through the system....might be a bit hard on the fuel lines especially if it is an older motor that would not stand up to the alcohol. I would think most of the newer outboards would be safe with the newer designed fuel lines out there...

Sea foam might do the same thing, along with helping to keep your motor decarbonized...

In addition, what do you guys also do to keep things from freezing up in the motor when the temps get cold. I've heard, pull the kill switch and turn the motor over to get all the water out. Put the motor all the way down to drain.

Any other ideas or suggestions? Not trying to to hijack this thread, thought it might fit in with it though.

THanks,

Make sure to trim your motor all the way down to let all the water drain out after every time fishing...Also another thing I make sure to do is, making sure that every time I start the motor in cold weather and water temps to let the motor run for a while until the water warms some coming out of the motor...
I run Stabil in mine towards the end of the season also..

with regards to lowering the motor...definitely a good idea. I have found that raising it and lowering it a couple of times will move more water out as well. The biggest thing is to not have water frozen in a line or in the head...if it expands, lots of trouble and $$$

When fishing, keeping the lower unit in the water is smart too. some of those real die hards are out there in the 20's fishing the last hints of open water... gotta play real smart in those conditions...

I've often wondered if there would be a way to run RV antifreeze through the cooling system before storage just to be safe, but I have never done this, nor have I had a problem with my motor with water.

My boat doesn't go into storage until early December in WI and I ALWAYS have Stabil in the tank and drain the motor very well after every use. I also make sure I change the lower unit lube in early fall to make sure there is no water in there as well. Never had any problems doing these simple things. In regards to adding antifreeze to the cooling system, if there is no water in there to begin with shouldn't have to do this. I would worry about possible corrosion from the antifreeze.
