| I just inherited a older Johnson Seahorse 9.5 2-stroke - mid sixties model. Engine looks to be in great shape and was maintaned will over the years. Can anyone confirm what the proper gas / oil mixuter should be? I assume it is 50:1 but I don't like working off of assumptions. Want to fire it up this weekend but I need to verify the mixture.

Location: Athens, Ohio | On my daddy's old 1952 Johnson 10, I mixed 8 oz of oil per gallon - quite a lot by today's standards. I was told to keep it a bit thick, due to old rings; she may smoke a bit at those levels but as long as it starts it's better than blowing the head, I guess.
BassBoatCentral has some Johnson guys over there that may be more help than I am, though. If it was me, before I 'fired it up' at the ramp and got halfway up the lake, I'd take it to a shop and have them tank test it, or put the muffs on in the front yard and let 'er rip a bit. good luck with it, those dang things are built like tanks! Also, double check the lower unit oil levels and clarity, pull the plugs for obvious fouling, ck. the fuel line for any pinhole leaks, all that good stuff. Is that a pressure fuel tank that you pump up? Mine was, you can't hardly find those any more.

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | That should be a 50:1 mix...
Suggestion...get a good synthetic oil (like amsoil) to do this with...and mix at 50:1. Even if the mixture is not right, the synthetic should have enough lubricating properties to work in the engine. Heck...my dads old chainsaw (johnsred early early early 70's) is now running on a 50:1 mix with these new synthetics...much better than the 32:1 it was at.

Location: Bloomington, MN | 50:1! Put up a pic of that old tortoise shell outboard! I have a 1967 Evinrude that I used until 1997 on my "under 10hp" outoboard lakes,Shabbona and Evergreen. It still runs! A true classic! | |

Thanks for the recommendation. I looked over the motor real close and discovered it was manufactured in 1964. My father in-law had some additional info on it. He verified it is a 50:1 mix. Motor was bought new at Sears for around $330.00 in the fall of 64. It was used sporadically for summer vacations to Lake Vermillion in Minnesota. They used to throw it in the back of the car to throw on the small aluminim boats the resorts made available to their customers. I guess it helped put many walleye on the dinner table -- most caught near the Vermillion dam. Found out the last time it had been started was July of 89 - about the same week my son was born. Anyway, I built a run-up stand so that I could put a tank of water under her, got a new tank and fuel line, bought some quality oil and gas and got her to turn over. It was a little stubborn to get started at first. Once I primed the carb and cylinders she started right up. She seems a little sluggish on the throttle and doesn't want to idle at low RPMs, but I imagine this will improve once I have a chance to run her for awhile. At low RPMs she has a tendency to knock real hard then sputter to a stop. If the RPMs stay above idle, she seems to run well.
Do you think I need to run any type of carb cleaner throgh her or are there any recommedations I should follow considering she hasn't been run in 18 years? I greatly appreciate the feedback on this forum. I will try to post a pic tonight of the old girl.
