I've been using a 2-part epoxy for filling my weight holes, much like Devcon 2-ton but with a lot longer pot life. Well, even that is getting to be a chore and the mixture still is thicker than I like. It's a hastle getting it to flow consistently, and some times I have to heat it in the micro wave for a few seconds to get it thin enough to pour out of the squeeze bottles that I use. There has to be something out ther that has the consistency of honey and a pot life longer than 20 minutes.
What do you use to fill over your lead? I usually fill within 1/4-1/2" of the surface and then finish off with a real good 2-part wood filler. Do you think if I "set" the lead with a punch the same diameter as the hole that I put the lead in that I even need the epoxy or would the filler be good enough?
So, what is a good strong epoxy to use that I don't have to keep remixing....like I do with Devcon from time to time, or should I just pound the lead and fill it with the wood filler? The wood filler that I use doesn't shrink, and can be filed and ground without crumbling. Seems like it might be strong enough for the job. I just started repairing some lures and weighting some lures to experiment with and wonder if I'm taking an extra step by using the epoxy and the filler both.
Thanks.
After trying a few, I really admire what you guys can do.

LONG TIME BUILDER. NO EXPERT ! I've had alot of luck with setting the lead with a punch ( 1st I usually bore a 5/16 hole in the wood, with a forstner bit ) don't hit the lead to hard, or you will split the wood. Trust me, I've made many mistakes. Use a small flat ended punch and start in the middle and work your way out to the edge. ( If you do not punch the lead, it will eventually work it's way out and screw up your finished lure ) To fill the remaining rough opening: BONDO : I personally haven't had a problem yet. Then again,I only Muskie fish 3 times a year. Garage - Beer - Power tool's - Solitude - Satisfaction of not spending $ 30.00 and making something tottally different and landing a toothy critter on your own lure
( AWESOME ) GOOD LUCK !

Thanks, I'll buy a small can and give it a try.
I'm tired of mixing small batches over and over again.
I'm going to try some for my own use and only use the wood filler that I use and see if that holds up.
Anybody else?

You can use wood filler, epoxy putty, plaster, and probably other things too. If you are pouring the lead in hot there is no reason to "set" it in place, it won't go anywhere. This of course assumes you are using wood. Plastic will allow the lead to slip and must be glued in place. If you want to use epoxy try the 5-minute version to hide the weights. Whatever you use just make sure you let it dry completely before going to the next stage of construction.
