Ok, I've read through several threads on this site and see that there is alot of knowledge on MuskieFIRST so here is my dilemma. I just purchased a 1986 Tournament TX BassTracker with a 60 hp Mariner outboard. I started the boat in my driveway with the mufflers on and after flooding it, got it started and it seemed to run fine or so I thought. The one thing I did notice was that the water from the drain tube was just sort of "misting" out and not shooting out. I shut the motor down after feeling the sides start to warm up. I removed the drain tube and blew air through it to check for any blockages which turned up nothing. So here is my question to all, what do you feel the problem is? Waterpump? Thermostat? Impeller? All of the above? Can I fix this myself with the parts and manual or do I rely solely on the 2-3 dealers in Rockford? Is there anyone close that does work on outboards? Thanks for all your opinions and hopefully some help. Jazz

If the tube is clear I'd bet you need a new impeller. I'd take it to a dealer, cost isn't bad at all.

Steve,
What should I expect it to cost for either impeller or water pump installed? Thanks.

The impeller is the water pump, really. I'd call ahead and get an estimate.

Definately sounds like it needs an impellor. Parts will be about $35-50 from the dealer. Labor will run probably $75+. They will probably change out the lower unit lube, too. Not a bad idea.

I do my own impellors. Not a bad job, but can be a bit tricky with the shifter shaft. Two people make it a bit easier.

Shep,
Do you change yours every two years like what I here is recommended or just when there is a problem? I know some people that have never done theirs in over 8 years. My boat goes into the dealer for service tomorrow. Jazz

On my previous boats, I changed them when I had a problem with the tattle tail being weak. On my last boat I had for 4 years, I changed it after two years. If I keep this boat, I'll change it after the season next fall.
