| I dont think anyone is the "GREATEST" and I bet if you asked all the guys that were mentioned they would say the same thing. Well.... Most of them anyway. Will there ever be a Micheal Jordan of muskie fishing....Who knows. With tourneys becoming more and more popular, I can see a young an up&commer sweeping up and creating legendary status for himself.
The post should read this instead.
If you had to pick three guys to put together to make the best musky fishing machine ever made : who would it be?
I would say....
1. Brian "BUBBA" Sirota - If you have been in the boat for 37 hours with him and you want to get some sleep, you have to physically stop him from fishing. (true) He is a machine.
2. Dick Pearson or Jlong - The thinking mans muskie fishermen.
3. Doug Johnson - And I quote "If it moves its food" (simplistic attitude)

| Bucher-for numerous reasons, and he claims that his favorite fish to catch is a smallmouth!
Maina-could be the best, catches big fish every year. Has Esox Angler to advertise himself too.
Saric-also caught numerous amounts of big fish. Has Musky Hunter to andvertise himself as well.
You can make a case for all the great names, these 3 just seem to be some of the most talked about guys out in the musky world as we know it today.

| Best ever, or the media 'stars' of today? best by what measure?
How does one gauge this, media coverage, exposure, actual talent, big fish, location; what variables should be taken into account?
There are some very good anglers out there who have not had the money, time or motivation to travel hundreds or thousands of miles to unspoiled areas and catch big fish. I admire the guy catching big fish in Wisconsin, Illinois, or Michigan every season; perhaps the New York angler who regularly catches larger than average fish, the Kentucky based angler catching fish in the 30# class with regularity, and so on...
I have always said that if one fishes where big fish are, one will catch big fish. I go to Wabigoon every year, and catch big fish there. The Lake of the Woods, Leech, Mille Lacs, and other big fish havens are the place to be now. If an angler spends a season on waters like that, then being the best there would be determined by numbers and average, not the fact one or two big fish were caught.
Time on the water is another factor. If an angler nearly lives on good muskie water over the season, one may EXPECT that many, and good quality muskies will be caught. The gent who fishs one day a week and produces 3 or 4 50" fish a year in waters where one needs to REALLY fish hard just to see one gets a vote from me.
ILLINI is right, there IS no greatest. This isn't basketball where raw talent, honed to perfection like a Jordan, creates a true sports hero. This is muskie fishing, where being fortunate, relatively well off, and opportunistic has as much to do with catching big fish as one's skills.
Lately, a younger angler from this board has been fishing VERY hard on tough water, and has not yet connected. Because expectations have been driven out of proportion by some of us, the bar sometimes is set too high for the guys fishing less than wonderful muskie water. His first fish this year there will have been earned in a like fashion to my 21st.
'Heros' in the muskie world in the past were built on legend. The 'heros' of the present have capitalized on media, and the coverage available in the business, making muskie fishing part or all of their job. I would rephrase the question and ask who are the top three 'personalities'. That is a far easier question to answer!
