Okay I went fishing yesterday, the motor started great as usual. Ran fine in the idle zones and no wake zones. Got to the main lake and went to run it full open and once it got over ten miles an hour the motor started shaking bad and making a terrible noise(whah, whah, whah), basically slowing the boat down. It kept doing this every time i tried to give it gas. My neighbor is a mechanic for rolles royce and said that my sheer pin might be bad. So i took the prop off and it doesn't have a sheer pin! Anybody got any ideas for me?

Well, after reading your post, it could be a couple different things. Is this an oil injected motor or do you have to mix your gas? If it's an oil injected with a oil reservoir, if you were low on oil, the motor will slow down to idle speeds. Reason for this is to conserve what little oil you have in the reservoir.

Another thing it could be is if this motor takes mixed gas, you may not be mixing your gas and oil correctly. Meaning, your amounts of oil to gas ratio is off and the motor is wanting more oil.

How is your prop, is there any damage? Damage to your prop can also cause what you say whah whah whah. Did you inspect your prop shaft? Did it appear bent?

I would check these things first. But I can almost bet you it has to do with your oil. I had the exact same problems with a 2stroke 50hp Yamaha. The symptoms sound exactly the same.

First of all thanks for your help, as this is my first boat ever!
I have to mix the oil and gas, there is little prop damage(do to fishing rivers so some minimum contact is made) it is not bent, missing chunks or anything like that, when i took the prop off the shaft seems fine, i do think that rear seal may be leaking but i make sure there is always lower unit oil in there? But yes i was thinking that it might have been the way i mixed the gas and i added some to it when i was on the water and it seemed to help a little but still same result. Again thanks for the help!

Sounds like a fuel flow/burn problem to me. Check your plugs, a fouled plug can cause the symptoms you describe. Check your fuel line, make sure the primer bulb pumps up and stays that way.

WELL THANKS GUYS, TOOK THE PLUGS OUT AND BOUGHT NEW ONES AND THE MOTOR RAN GOOD AS NEW! AGAIN THANKS FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS, GLAD I DIDN'T HAVE TO TAKE IT TO THE SHOP, AS I WOULD HAVE MISSED PRIME MUSKIE TIME!

One thing I would do is switch to synthetic oil. Smokes less, runs better and cleaner.

I have a similar problem with a nearly-new 15 hp Merc that I have. I've had it in under warranty 3 times and on my own buck two times. No one can seem to figure it out and Merc Customer Service has been useless. All they can seem to tell me is that the "warranty has expired". Ya I know that....

So Steve, you brought up a point that made a lightbulb go on. None of these guys that have tried to fix it ever wanted me to leave the tank. And, no, the bulb doesn't stay pumped up. Could that be my problem. A bad line or primer bulb?

Thanks

What exactly do you want Merc customer service to say....they can't fix the motor over the phone. All they can advise you do is take it to your mercury servicing dealer.

Yup, if the bulb goes soft or flattens out right away, that's a good place to start. the gas in the tank could have water or other contaminants in it, too. If the motor runs fine at the shop and doesn't on your rig, it's something on your rig, I'd wager.

Thanks Steve,

I'll try a new fuel line/bulb right away. I hope it's that simple.

My problem is that the Merc Service departments don't know what to try anymore. I've had it to three different places. This thing has a lot of history. It doesn't run fine in the shop. They always try something new that helps one problem but creates another. It's a long story.

Thanks.

Are you near twin cities metro? If so, go to Supreme Marine.

If it doesn't run fine in the shop either, then that should eliminate the primer bulb.

If you have a history of the same thing prior to the warranty running out, and the motor never ran correctly after these service attempts, then your dealer should be working with you on getting this thing fixed under warranty. Now, if you are bouncing between dealers, well. I thnk you get the drift. I understand you want the motor to run correctly, and if one dealer hasn't been able to fix it. But that is the time to contact Merc, and ask them were you should take it for continued service under warranty.
