Location: Stevens Point, WI | Fished with Ifishskis yesterday on a beautiful Vilas County lake. Jim not only broke a long fishless drought but he scored his first three fish day!! Had a great time with Jim and he boated three while I blanked. Really had to work for fish in the slop, Perch patterns seemed to be the ticket. Jim's biggest was a dandy 42" on a Ducktail weedless jerkbait. I had a REALLY nice fish take a swipe at a bucktail, but it missed the bait entirely.

My heartfelt thanks to MuskieMedic for answering my desperate call to go fishing!!!! Derek is a pleasure to be in the boat with....we talked about musky tales and just about everything else (except our wives!!! next time right Derek!! )....the fact that I caught fish and destroyed my fishless streak was just a bonus. You don't have to catch fish to have fun! Derek will get them next time for sure! He's a GREAT musky fisherman!
Y'all should check out this lure....a Ducktail "Weed Warrior" jerkbait. http://ducktaillures.com/warriorjerkbait.shtml I've had it for 2 years, but yesterday it really shined yesterday with it's ability to work through heavier weeds and slop. I'm not a musky master, and the lure took me a little bit to get comfortable with, but boy I can sure now work it through the heavy stuff. I really never had a lot of confidence working thick weeds....but I do now!
Thanks again Derek, and I can't wait till next time! |

Location: Nowheresville, MN | Fish were EATING this weekend. Went for the cutters on both fish, and both went ballistic in the net. One deep mag dawg, one SHALLOW suick. Couldn't get anything going suspended.
Urban Myths:
Myth: Tonka fish are smart.
Truth: Maybe so, but some are DUMB. I lost one on a giant spinner bait this morning that I really didn't even set the hook on. The bait pulls so hard it just got heavy so I kind of just pulled on it to free it of weeds. Well this fish comes up lazily and just barely shakes its head, comes free, just lays there and sinks back down and repositions in the hole in the weeds. I was ticked. After some choice words and starting to move on, I turned the boat back around and said what the heck it looked like that fish wasn't even phased. First throwback with a suick and bammo. Stupid fish. Picture (solo shot) cropped to protect the innocent.
Myth: Fish the wind.
Truth: Wind sucks.
Myth: Double 10s!
Truth: Foof! I've spent at least $200 making a nice selection of these things with not so much as a sniff.
Observations:
1. Just when you think you've got the dawg curse lifted, nope! Missed one this morning.
2. Being a transplanted N. WI boy, fishing this year and electrofishing the metro this year I can say metro muskies are SHALLOW!
3. The suick rides again! After not seeing any water time for seriously like three years I broke out the old suick. First cast caught a pike and had fish going all weekend on it.
4. The worms gears on Abu 7000i's don't last. New reel in July and it's already hanging up on one side.
5. Milfoil Sucks!
6. Here's a great idea. Let's build a nice city landing for parking for 8 rigs. Then let's not let trailers park in the lot on Weekends and holidays. Instead we'll make them park on the busiest street in town two blocks away. I waited for probably 4 minutes before I could cross the street because traffic was so bad.

Location: oswego, il | Just got back to from minnesota and it was a great trip for my family. The water temps were way down and the action pike areas I take my kids to had big fish in those locations. Not alot of pike were caught but my 13 year old got his biggest musky, a 45 1/2"er on a mini lac suel turbo. My youngest son caught a 38 1/2" pike on a violent strike spinnerbait. I got a 42.5" musky and two big bass on a wild looking buzz bait I made. My grandfather caught a smaller musky but lost a nicer one at the boat, had three more hit his home made surface bait and some follows. Seen nice fish every day too plus some nice smallies. My kids liked chasing them, I think the pike fishing is over.

Location: Greenfield, WI | Well looking at the previous reports I can only conclude that "I Suck!"
I was out on Pewaukee Lake Sunday morning. We had two instantaneous strikes by mid 30" muskies. saw two other undersized, and 4 gars! The fish were all in heavy weeds and came vertical on bucktails.
Pewaukee joined the ranks of "no wake" lakes, which can crimp efficient fishing of normal milk run spots on a long and narrow 2400 acre lake.
Inspite of many boats of much greater horsepower, my Tuffy Esox Magnum was the fastest boat on the lake!!!!
The good news is that the water temps were down to low 70's in mid lake areas. Fall is coming!
Todd, great pictures, we can see that there was no fun in your family!

| Took my 11-year old daughter up to Vilas, and was very discouraged because we couldn't launch at 3 of the lakes that we wanted to fish. I had no idea how low the water is once you get north of Rhinelander. Better yet, I don't know how some property owners are going to get their Chriscrafts and Bayliners out of the lakes, since they would have to cover 30 yards of sand and gravel to get to the ramp. I wish that I had a row troller for some of those lakes, because there are new, lush weed edges and they haven't been fished in months. We could carry a row-troller over and have at 'em.
Other than that, we were fishless, but had action on topwaters, with the Mega-Turd I was given getting attention a few times. Best part is that my daughter can now throw a lure as well as most guys that I've fished with, and she can take out her own back lashes. Now I just have to get her to stick one so she knows what it's all about.
We did get out early one morning, and she appreciated what a sunrise over the lake looked like, and she even pulled out a book at one point and said, "Being in a boat sure is relaxing, isn't it?" I'm kind of hoping for excitement and told her the only thing that I ever read in the boat was an owners manual or a navigational map.
All in all, spending time with my kid is the best part of any trip, fish or no fish. |

Location: Lino Lakes, MN | Just got back from a week up at Canadian Haven on LOTW...Brian and Kathy run a great resort with very nice cabins and rental boats that far exceeded my expectations. It was an up and down week for us but I really enjoyed my time on the water. It seemed that when the fish were on we could have seen and caught them anywhere, but when they were off, we didn't see much of anything(and trust me, on the off days we fished deep, shallow, weeds, rocks, current...and threw everything but the kitchen sink at them). My brother and a 10" Suick seemed to be the hot combo as he caught 6 of our 11 fish, breaking his PB twice with a 44.5 and then a 46" Weagle fish. He stuck through a 3 year drought without a fish and only had 2 in the past year and a half so I couldn't have been any happier to be his netman. My buddy Nate got his first 3 fish ever with 2 shorties and then a solid 43. I think we might have given another one the musky sickness. I followed up with a shortie and a 40.5. I had chances at some bigger fish and had probably my PB hooked next to the boat but it just wasn't meant to be for me this year. Its a lot different being up there when you have to work the boat and aren't with someone who has fished the lake forever...it got disappointing and frustrating at times but I learned a lot about boat control and reading conditions on the water. More than anything, I'm looking at these trips as an investment into the future as I plan on spending many years fishing LOTW. I also can't thank Bob Pieske enough for the advice, company, and the great meal that he cooked for us on Thursday night...I think I could have sat with him for hours on end with all of the stories and knowledge of the lake that he has stored away. All in all, we had a great trip and I can't wait to get back up there next year. Here are a few pics from the trip:

Location: oswego, il | Beav, anytime you can spend time with your daughter is a special time. I am really glad she enjoys the outdoors with you. I was amazed at how my kids attitude changed at the action we started to have. None of them like the morning time and I have to get them to rotate the morning time. Once the muskies were biting, mornings were not a problem. Even their bait choices changed, no longer picking baits to pike or action fish, looking for that next nice musky. I was having a hard time getting them to want to quit and head in for lunch and by mid week, I took them out in a mid day shift too. Was great to see their desire last week. |

Location: north central wisconsin | Took the yearly weeklong trip with wife and daughter. Mom and sis came up for a few days at the beginning and we were hit with some cold wind(for this time of year) for the first few days, with Vermillion getting a bit rough in places. Midweek, Mom got her first ever musky, a 47" on a GP Thumper AC-10, with the wife losing her fish of a lifetime(big big) on a Rylure globe on one of the famous Vermillion reefs. Those were the highlights of the trip. Biggest fish for the trip was 51.25", which I'd have given anything for one of the ladies to have caught.

Location: Brookfield | Trolled Pewaukee this weekend, it was really nice not having any water skiers due to the no wake rule because of high water. I found out trolling with a 115 hp 2 stroke is not a good idea for long term trolling. I guess I will be buying a kicker for next year. We did manage to loose 1 fish before the motor quit on me.
I'm heading to 3 lakes for labor day weekend, my brain has been up their for atleast a week, I'm just waiting for my body to follow.

I guarantee next time I won't be swimming either. But Slamr will be holding a nice Nov fatty. |

Don't be too hard on yourself. Iowa in general has been a giant disappointment this year (even more than usual). Haven't heard of anyone catching any. Hope that this isn't the start of a trend that will take the state even lower than it already is. The heavy rains sent a lot of fish over the dams in to the creeks or other bodies of water this spring. Our MI chapter caught and retransplanted 45 fish back into the main lake from below Brushy Creek, but according to the DNR, there are not that many down there. I believe the article on the project will be in the next MI magazine. |
