| We have all been hearing lots of reports of the big buck tails with double #10 blades producing great results.....
I notice most of the talk with these big buck tails is for lakes such as Mille Lacs, Vermillion, LOTW and other Canadian Shield lakes. I never seem to hear anyone using or having reults with these baits on lakes in WI....
I have thrown a cowgirl quite a few times with no luck....common of most baits for me :). But do have a some luck with smaller bucktials.
Is it just the lakes i am fishing? Does it have something to do with the strain? Or is it the hype on these particular lakes that i am noticing?
Just curious......

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | You bet the double 10's are working in WI! I had my doubts, but have seen it first hand in my boat. Several fish have found there way to the Frabill in my boat on several different manufacturers of the double #10's. In fact I just got done sharpening up some of my newly aquired SpankyBait's Fireballs, and am dying to try them out.
I know several friends who have put quite a few fish in the boat between 45-50" on double #10's in WI this year, and that number is just going to grow. |

Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | Here is a school of thought, by my good friend Pete:
"When she is hungry for a Meal, yeah, she is gonna grab one of those big baits. But, if she has a belly full of food, and a little bit of desert comes past her nose, she is not above turning it down."
Pete had a great trip at LOTW throwing smaller stuff, catching more fish than anyone else in camp that week. Only one guy got a bigger fish than him.
Bigger baits have their place and time, as do small stuff.
Another case in point:
Pete and i shared a day on the water before his LOTW trip. While i got alot of follows on big stuff, he had more hits on smaller stuff. going big pays out in spades, sometimes. Desert, what female (musky, not sexist) can resist? |

Location: Presque Isle Wisconsin | The Double 10's work big time in Wis. My customers have taken really nice fish on them off every concievable type of structural element so far this year and from depths of 1'ft. to casting over 100' of water.I weighted one version with the front weight from the old mepp's lusox series bucktail and crawled it down a rocky point last night ( the front weight made it spin niceley on the drop) and caught a 43 " male when the bait was at approx 17' down. Also had a much bigger fish short hit the same version as I let it fall in front of shoreline wood. The short hit was probably due to a north wind situation on a lake that intensley dislikes that particualr wind direction, but one caught and one missed isnt bad on that lake under those conditions in a couple of hours. Im noticing that blade color seems to matter a lot with these type baits under different weather conditions as they seem to be hitting or following baits with dark or black blades in overcast ,low light,or dark conditions and a white/silver blade combo has been the best under high skies on clear or lightly stained water conditions.
Ive used them a lot on lakes where fish have been suspended off structure ,but shallower due to water color, during mid day hours. For the deeper fish we are doing the best on suzy suckers crawled (like a sucker on the bottom},and Curley Sues worked in a lift/drop manner off the ends of mid lake structural elements.
Roger Waters from H20 baits sent me a terrific version of a new paddle tail surface bait along with some other new designs thatI havnt tried yet,but the paddle tail bait is extremely subtle and is going to produce some big fish in those areas that you know a big girl is feeding under the right conditions. If you dont own one of those types of baits-you should- They can get some very big muskies to hit when nothing else will work as Steve or others will tell you.Takes aLOT of patience and faith in both the lure and the spot-KInd of a ZEN presentationI guess.
Busted up a prop on Crab the other day-Just "shows to go you" that even after many years on that lake it can still bite ya. Hope all you guys are having a great season -Se ya in October for the outing.
