I have a Lowrance X71, which has been pretty good up til this spring, then on the day of a drenching downpour near the end of my spring fishing, it quit working and everytime I would turn it on it would come on for a few seconds, and then quickly start telling that it would shut off in two seconds, and it would count them off and did shut off in two seconds. From that point on it would transmit a line at the bottom of the screen. Putting two and two together I came up with "a short due to moisture" theorem, since the fuse hadn't blown, I hadn't hit any thing and I can find absolutely no stressors or marks on the cable or transducer. I had the idea that it might dry out and work again and just held on to it. Probably not the best course of action but...tried it in mid June and it didn't work. Tried it again today in the 95 degree heat and it kind of stuttered and actually ran for a while before kicking off and did this a few times while I idiotically tried doing the menu and changing settings a few times thinking I might have actually, or the moisture might have actually triggered some shut off setting(working on the "computer diety" theory). Well much like a motor stuttering before it finally catches and takes off, my depth finder also started stopped and finally with some advanced button pushing(no, I don't have a clue)the thing started running and kept running, shutting off one more time after a minute or two and then maintaining itself for another 40 minutes, the rest of the trip and still hanging in there when I got home from the lake.

Anybody seen this? Or does anybody understand the process of this thing restarting the way it did?? I would think like most electronics, it would either be on or off, not a hit or miss like this.

Sounds like a soft ware issue, I think. I'm at the PWT Super Pro in a few days, and can ask Ron from Lowrance!

Boy I would like to know. I'm debating whether it is cure or whether I should get a cheapie to make do till I get it fixed. Of course the good solution, send it and get it fixed earlier, is too undependable at this poin.

Ron Hunter will know exactly what is happening, and I'll be seeing him right after labor day, if you can wait that long.

I had the same thing happen to an x70 a few years ago on Mille Lacs. No dash depthfinder for two days=no fun. It did work again after it thourougly dried out, although after that it was missing some pixels in the display.
