Make a suggestion, this is for all the lure tweakers out there. What lure would you make a change to? NOW LET'S PLAY NICE HERE TOO! Would you change body style, hook placement, add weight?

I would change every crankbait line up to add a neutral bouyant bait (Jakes, Slammers, Ernies, Depthraiders...).

I would change the Bobbie bait hook placement. Why would you put a hook in a place where it will wrap around the tail on every other cast?

I would make a ribbed [] Crankbait. I think the extra water displacement would really help.

I would change a spinnerbait in someones lineup. Longer upper wire for deflection of cover from the hooks. Larger hooks for the most part, 7/0 minimum. Through wire design so that the trailer hook is attached to the wire rather than to the main hook. Wider but tapered head for in the "rushes" so that the bait bumps around them better. (Fudally's Stump Hawg Head) Last but not least, lighter wire for more flex and more vibes or water movement. Oh yeah, a coiled line tie rather than a twisted one. This also gives more wire flex. You could throw in a full selection of weights as well from 1/2 oz up to about 2 or
2 1/2 oz. Free lure design for some entrepeneur out there that wants to sell some baits.........at least to me. I am tinkering with my own right now but am not going to make any except for myself. But would prefer to just buy a few.

I would make every bait with a black back....to a more colorful pattern, like white.

So anglers can see and use there baits much better. A muskie cant look down...only up!

Hey Scott (setme31) your idea about a ribbed crank-bait is excellent, I'm wondering if you have some or just thought of this. About 8 or 9 years ago I had a guy come up tp me after a seminar and hand me a proto-type jointed crank-bait made from some sort of plastic, all I can remember was his first name (John) from Pa. I thought it looked a little strange. Anyway he gave me his phone number and asked me to let him know what I thoght after trying it. To make a long story short I absolutly loved that bait and was responsable for many many muskies in my boat until two years ago when it was lost, I tried to contact him later that same season but his phone had been disconected. If you have any of these baits (no name was given them at the time) or know where I could get a dozen (or one) PLEASE let me know. The shape of the bait was simular to a depth raider except the body was slightly broader and more of a oval shape about 6 1/2 ins long without the lip and the lip was almost identical to the depth raider. Thanks[:p]

I would like to have a 10 inch Depthraider and or Ernie. The bigger baits like the Hooker, Parrywinkle, etc. are big baits that catch some nice fish. I guess I am of the big bait, big fish theory.

Good luck, Murph

Hey Chuck,
Sorry, I don't have any of those, but I would sure like some. I thought of the idea after reading one of Jason Long's articles on water displacement.

There are probably many ways to do it, but I am too afraid to ruin a bait.

I would think if you used a Dremel, and cut slits into the bait. Then put some tub and bath caulk into the slits so some was sticking out, that would work. Although it would probably just ruin the bait. I hate buying expensive lures, and I hate ruining them even more.

Jlong isn't scared of ruining baits, so maybe he could come up with a prototype and sell us some.

The problem with the ribs is that it gives the Ski's teeth something to hold onto. Without ribs you can slam the hooks home. You’re better of getting your water displacement thru the lures action.
I have heard some whispers about jlong’s prototypes as well. Can’t wait!!!
Hurry Jason!

I really like Buchertail 700's but they get pretty bent up after only a couple fish. Don't tell Tom Dietz but I recently picked up two Teriminator bucktails in the Wal-Mart close-out bin, they're titanium and I'm gonna give 'em a try this season. Honest, Tom, I would prefer titanium 700's to try!

Would like to see a "Squirly Sledge" and also would like for Terry Peterson to get back to work making Tek-Neeks.

I would like to see the old buchertail spinnerbaits back for sale. They discontinued them but I have a picture of these in Joe's book 'bucktailsfishing for muskies' from 1983.

Also, maybe a jointed slammer twitchbait? I'd love to try a 5" and 6" of those for pike in shallow water. Maybe this is too difficult for the process.

Also a jointed supershadrap from rapala. I tinkered with one and it now has a tail-part of 4cm. Great wiggle and less depth so ideal for shallow water cranking. It's just as crazy as you think it is.

My main beef with a lot of lures with a hard body, wood or plastic, is the hook size and placement. I have posted about this before but nothing seems to change no matter who the manufacturer is.

First of all hook size. The gap of the hook is to small to stick out from the sides of the lures body. Thus there is only 1 hook out a treble that is in postion to actually hook a fish. The other 2 are covered by the width of the lures body. Yes I know, one can T-Bone the hooks to increase their gap, but in doing so you weaken the hook. Once bent even a little bit it's easier for a fish to bend it some more. Put wider gapped hooks on your baits.

Second is hook placement. Either the hooks are placed to close together on the lure or the shank of the hook is to long. This leads to tangled hooks and wasted casts. Remember that fishing time is only the time when a bait is in the water and in a position to actually hook a fish. All the rest of the time on the water is just boating. Solution is to use less hooks or shorter shanked hooks.

Put the two together and I want shorter shanked wider gapped hooks on my lures. The problem is a lot of hook manufactures stop making a short shank, round bend, wide gapped hook in size 5/0. Some wide body lures such as a Believer or a glider such as a hughes river need a 7/0 or 8/0 or larger round bend treble to get a large enough gap for the hook to stick out from the sides of the bait. Yet the shank must be short or your back to the tangled hooks again. [:(] If the lure manufactures demanded better sized hooks from the hook manufactures then the problem would be solved.

My suggestion isn't a lure, but a sucker rig. I love the Wolverine Tackle ones, but I feel they use too big a treble hook on them. I think downsizing one or two would be better.

I would like to see two line ties on all crankbaits a shallow setting and a deep setting . Just like the Belivers and the Ledgend baits ! Just picture a depth raider or a Erinie with a shallow setting ?

I do not offer bait modifications as much as I would like to comment on the spinnerbait modifications suggested by Muskyone. Such a spinnerbait does exist- thick wire with the rear 7/0 hook wolverine split ringed onto the wire, not the 1st hook. High wire to break cover with a wide head, tandem blades, one small, one larger. A LOT of hair in a wide choice of colors. About 9.5 inches long. The only modifications I make on some of them are to remove the small blade, and replace the colorado blade with a willow leaf to reduce fatigue.
Have caught 0 muskies, but a lot of big northerns trolling, throwing these.

They sold for $5 at the fisherman's swap meet in Des Moines this winter. Hope this helps everyone, including Jeff.

I'd change the six inch Reef Hawg into a 2-hook lure. I'd trade the two front hooks for one more centrally located hook.
