the trim gauge wasn't responding quickly when I was trimming the motor up or down today. Does this indicate a bigger problem pending? TIA

I take it your gauge on your console? Check your connection behind the dash, it might be loose or your gauge is out of whack and not corresponding with the right position of the motor. Believe it or not, this is actually a common problem. I know this happened a lot with the pontoons this year at the marina I worked for and only thing I can think of to solve that problem was to get a new gauge, but there may be another solution.

Your gauge may be experiencing a delayed sender signal, check the connection back at the engine for corrosion and such. Good advise for-hand on checking the gauge terminals, all works in sync. What motor and gauge set is it?

I was out this past weekend, and I noticed that the gauge reading would fluctuate while trolling in not much of a chop.

motor is an '01 90HP four stroke Merc. I'm not sure on the gauge set, but these are on a Lund Mr Pike and CE was the easiest thing to read on the back of the gauges. Wires don't look like they got a short. I checked the wires at the back of the gauges and at the motor. Looks like there is some sort of sensor mounted to the motor bracket that sends the signal to the gauge for the trim level besides the wires that go to the trim motor? Where do I go from here? Thanks.

Check to make sure the sending unit is not loose. If you have a meter, you can check the signal from the sending unit for stability. It it is stable, then I'd look into a new guage. If not, then I would say the sending unit is faulty. Ask your dealer if he has a guage you can borrow to check it out. Chances are he has one he took off when installing some SmartCraft gauges.
