Location: The desert | Well it is officially over....my summer adventure out to Utah comes to a close today, my last day of work has been spent hanging out in the office doing some data entry for the research project I am doing for my internship.
For those that dont know I drove out to Utah in late May to work for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. I worked in the aquatics division doing many different types of fish/amphibian work. The vast majority of the work was backpack electrofishing, which is where we carry backpack type contraptions that put electricity in the water to stun the fish and make them 'easy' to net. Other times we used a raft or a boat that did the same thing, only it put out much more power. If you have never electrofished, try and volunteer with you local DNR, its amazing to see what is really in the waters you fish!
It was a lot of work, but the work was very enjoyable. I only made $20 a day in per diem food money so the work better have been enjoyable! I've caught more trout than I care to admit, but have also had time to fish with another board member, Sorenson. We had a couple of real good days on the water including a MatchFishing day where we boated 14 fish. We also took my boss out for his first ever musky fishing adventure. After watching his first cast I thought it was going to be a long day, with him giving up or switching to perch fishing....boy was I wrong. He landed the only two fish of the day one a 28 or so and the other a 42 incher. Beginners luck! Heck the biggest Tiger I caught was only 29 inches.
When I came out to Utah I had what I thought was the girl of my dreams. Keep dreamin' Mike LOL! About 2 or so days before she was scheduled to come out here she ended it. After about 2 days of mild depression I talked with some people and snapped out of my funk and found a fellow Pointer up in the mountains working for a guy in our office. Together we discovered all of what the fabulous town of Evanston, WY had to offer. A couple of weekends at the Legal Tender bar and the most recent girl is barely a memory, now all I have is the memory of some good time of me on the dance floor, especially the weekend I danced with 2 strippers YEEHAW! I learned its time to just enjoy being young. Fish hard, party hard, and study hard so I can land a great job and actually get paid for it....going to the bar every weekend is hard on a $20 a day budget.
I hit the road tomorrow for a 3 day trek across the US...I'm really looking forward to driving through all of Nebraska! Once home I'm heading up north to fish and party with Merckid. I've missed the muskies and could really use a few days off to fish for the coolest fish in freshwater. I'm also looking forward to getting back to school and catching up on some missed M1st time, hopefully sharing a boat with some of the great people on the site. When I get time I'll post some pictures of me hard at work.
Good luck to all those fishing this weekend! |

Are you making fun of Nebraska? I'm just joking. Drive safely, good luck and have fun.
