| Talking to guys at the motel at St. Clair last week I heard crazy & conflicting stories about the law & it's penalties.
Does anybody know? I have a few friends going to LOTW in August and they always have beer in the boat?????
Is that legal? What happens if they get caught?
I have heard $50 per can ticket...........
I have heard you can never come back to Ontario.......
When I was up there, we always has 3-4 in the cooler for lunch, I had no idea I was at risk!
Thanks! |

Alcohol and Boating
Consumption of Alcohol
In most provinces :
Alcohol may be consumed on board the pleasure craft if it meets all of the following conditions:
The vessel has permanent sleeping facilities
The vessel has permanent cooking facilities
The vessel has a permanent toilet
The vessel is anchored or secured alongside a dock
Check with the appropriate provincial authorities (OPP for Ontario, SQ for Quebec, RCMP for all other provinces and territories) for carriage restrictions.

| Do you know what the fines are?
Are they serious? |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | They are VERY serious. No alcohol in the boat out there, not worth the fine and other possible problems if you are caught. If they think you have been drinking and are impaired, the OPP can and will take you in. |

| You ought be able to get through a day of fishing and wait until you get back to camp to enjoy a long-neck or can of your choice...
If you can't...you just might have a problem, bigger than legal penalties.
Water, Gatoraide, Pop/Soda...better for combating dehydration and just as cold without the effects of the alcohol... Keeps you and others on the water safe.
Fish/boat safe. |

| I was told the fine is now up to $700.00. |

| A couple years ago we stayed on an island a mile out from shore. I remember one person in our group wondering if he could get in trouble if he got stopped while transporting the beer from the mainland to the island. He didn't, but he knew the fine was quite expensive, and serious enough that it made him think about this first. |

| AND ...LOTW is patrolled hard! You MAY get away with a few beers in the boat on some waters in Ont. but LOTW is the last place I would try! |

Location: Roseau | If I wanted to camp on an island in ontario on LOTW, it is legal for me to carry beer in the boat as long as it is not opened? That is the way I read it. We want to camp some and would like to have a cold one in the evening around a fire, looks like we are able to do so.
Thanks |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Yes, but it has to be in the original container as I understand it, not loose cans. Recently, a friend was stopped on a Dryden Ontario lake. they had 4 beers in a cooler, and were told that they could be cited. They had to take the beer back to shore. |

Location: Eastern Ontario | You can transport booze to an Island camp but the case/bottle must be full and uncracked. If you get caught with beer onboard the driver will get fined, if there are open containers on board they will fine each party responsible for each container. Naturally they will take away all booze as well as handing out fines. Now if they believe the driver to be impared they can be arrested just the same way as if it was a car. Well basicly the laws are the same if you are in a car or a boat.
Now the fine normally is for drinking in public and I beleive it's over $100 now. |
