| All of these I am putting in the article section of the site under member articles for easy learning in the future.
Here is the discription of the small lake.
500 acre round lake
Deep bowl style
50 ft deep in the middle
The weed line starts at 10ft
Shoreline to the weed edge is 100ft.
Shallow structure is reeds.
Forage:cisco and perch
Water color clear, 12ft of clarity
Weeds: cabbage, coontail
Bottom: sand and muck in the deeper areas
Spring fed lake
The water is located in Vilas Co Wisconsin and is a good balanced fishery. Large fish are common from this small lake, but not numbers.
Its early June, water temps are 55 to 60. wind at 5mph from the southwest.
1)Where are you going to fish
2)With what presentation?

| This is an easy one, first I'm going to concentrate on the north side of the eco-system first. With that water temp I'll search out any green weeds or posiably where a creek or spring is present, if not then wood and or rocks and if I find an area with all three forms of structure I'll spend alot of time there. With the water temp at 55 to 60 the fish should be just finishing up spawning so my bait selection will be of the slower types, on the spinners, nickle blades anytime time and brass if it's over-cast and the speed will be just fast enough to keep the blade turning. Six inch twich baits or jerk/glide baits and then jig&creature. | |

| Well, I consider a 500 acre lake in Vilas county on the LARGER side.... considering there are a lot more lakes in the 150 acre range than in the 1000+ acre range. So, with that said.... my 500 acre lake of choice would be a DEEP, clear, cisco-based lake with virtually no weed growth and I'd start right off with the consistent open water pattern. A 7 inch suspending deep diving crankbait is all I'll need. Cruise the basins and deeper flats looking for baitfish and start fan casting. Long pauses with the suspending crank will really bring up those springtime sleepers. | |

| First of all, I'm ONLY going to hit this lake on a cloudy or otherwise sh*tty day, good muskie weather, bad sunbathing weather if you catch my drift. Hot, sunny days, I'll be hitting darker, shallower lakes. I'd start at the edge, but far enough off the edge that my casts (long bombs here) just reach the edge, not casting over it. Being that it is Cisco based, I'd have someone fishing the "Canadian" side at all times. Bait selection would be for this style: BIG, SLOW, sinking cisco/shad colored (white, blue, lots of flash) baits run very slowly, thinking a slow glider such as an HR (still love the bait, hate the man) or weighted Reef Hawg or Phantom.....or I'd throw the mag dawg with a ssslllowww crank crank pull pull pause retrieve. I'd be watching the electronics closely, looking for schools of baitfish, and then working the h*ll out of them if I can find'em.
If that technique didn't work, I'd head out to nowheres-ville next....moving quickly across the open water, casting the same baits, running DEEP and slow at first, looking for baitfish on the locator, then running my baits at the lower range of where I'm marking them. Where I mark the bait fish, I'd toss a buoy, and work all around it, about 30 yards in each direction (my theory is that Muskies like to follow the schools, but stay on the outside, til sneaking in for a free meal). If I can troll (which is doubtful), I'd troll it to death, hitting deep water first, then snaking in and off the edge....tossing buoys where I mark baitfish, and fishing them like I described earlier.
If none of this works, I'd go with the usual early season N.WI routine: small twitchers (baby Jakes, bomber long As and long A mags) over the weed tops, run really slow, going to the perch pattern, or something with a lot of flash. I would stay away from the small 'tail thing, not my style, and I don't believe the skies will be in a "chasing" mood. My only wrinkle would be I'd pitch the bull pup a bit, running it with the rod tip up to keep her out of the weeds....and I'd try a really slow glider (baby Phantom).
This what you think I'd say Jason?

| I am in Shock...a great constructive post to learn from.....From Slamr.
Great jub dude!!![]
Trust me folks, Slamr may kid around alot...but I have fished with him, and he is a good stick.
Maybe we will now see a new and different Slamr on site from now on....NOT![]

| If it was early in the morning I would start with Jasons plan. Then as the sun warmed things up I would go with Chucks plan. The reeds would have to be fished also, once had a 4 footer come shooting out of a thick patch and hit my bait during a figure 8 from 15 feet away.

| I would find the warmest water and twitch 5" and 6" Slammers, hopefully over some new weed growth. Small bucktails over the weed flats would be good too.
But dont forget the SUSPENDOS. If weed growth is not available, alot of the fish will be suspended and cranking, deep twitching and bull dogs will be the key.
| | |
| Jason, no need to go deep this time of year. The thermocline is at its highest in the water column making those suspendos the most accessible they will be all year long!!! Then again.... why doesn't everyone forget about those open water roamers and stick to the shallow weeds. I don't like crowds (ha ha). | |
| | |
| I would do some sight fishing to start with. Get up onto the shallow shelf and see how far things have progressed. Looking for weed pods and warm water. If you see any muskies up shallow, a jig and reaper is hard to beat. Spinner baits, small bucktails and small twitch baits for action. If it doesn't look like the growth has progressed much yet, I would tool around looking for the Cisco schools and start fan casting once I locate some. I am generally moving around fast and frequent at this time of the year trying to establish a method to the madness. | |

| Hey Jlong, I like your thinking, if I was on my own and looking for the largest fish in the eco-system I more than likely would fish your pattern (I don't like crowds either) but I truly believe with past experience the action is with the pattern I discribed, I guess I'm thinking like a guide. In my opionion both patterns will work, I believe it comes down to what your after. (action or trophy) | |

| I would mirror what Chuck says, but spend way more time on the inside edges and new weed growth withj a Creature, and toss an Undertaker over the edges, too, fishing out from shallow to deep.
