I broke the viewing screen on my Sony mini DV video camera in AK a couple weekes ago(the lcd screen just slowly went out) then dropped the thing on the pond this past weekend(now nothing works) and am looking into getting a new one. I am wondering if some of the new hard drive models are the way to go, DVD models, or if the mini DV format is still the best bet. I do not do alot of editting, and would like to hear some input on the new models if anyone has run them. Thanks in advance. [email protected]

The new hard drive models are pretty nice, but we have elected to stick to mini dv format for our interview/outdoors shooting. We do have a unit each with an 80 Gig hard drive, but it's for incidental footage.

So Steve, is the quality still a bit better in the dv format? with that asked, is there a pretty decent dv to DVD recording system that I should look at. Brand? Any to stay away from? My last camera was a Sony(I think hc 26), and it performed well, but I wouldn't mind something that took the elements just a tad better.

Thanks for the help. Will probably stick to the dv format for now, and get a decent dv to dvd recorder when I buy.

Jason,
Mini Dv for sure. You'll get a better picture from the tapes rather than the HD plus you can buy new tapes so you don't need to suck up all you memory on your computer. I've seen some really cheap ones in over the past couple weeks.

If you really want to go crazy, the HD mini-dv's are going just for just under $500 if you want the best picture... Otherwise you can find quite a few for under $200.

Not sure if you're looking at reviews out there. Here are a couple of good resources.

Jason,

My wife bought me a JVC Everio HDD and it is incredible. E-mail me and I can fill you in with details and costs.
