Location: Brookfield | Can anyone offer suggestions to help me out. I am looking for a hand held marine radio but I dont want a piece of junk, I want something quality and gets good reception. What kind of wattage would I need and what dollar amount am I looking at. I would like to be able to talk to someone clearly on a maximum of a 10,000 acre lake. I want a hand held so I can take it from boat to boat.
Thanks, NUT | |

Location: milwaukee | I'd recommend Icom or Vertex Standard brands. They make commercial radio gear (the stuff you find in dump trucks, cabs, cop cars, etc.), and the quality and ruggedness carries through to their marine line. Cost will be $150-$300.
Handhelds are going to be limited to 5-6 watts. Should be good boat-to-boat over a 10,000 acre lake unless you have islands in the way.
Check West Marine or visit these guys in Milwaukee: http://www.aesham.com/home.shtml
Also PM me for another possibility.
