I have decided to try an 8' rod this year. Not sure if I will like it or will want a 7'6". My longest rods now are 7'.

In any case, not wanting to spend a bunch of money until I know I like the longer rods, I'm looking at the Fig Rig 8' MH for $90 and St. Croix Premier 8' MH for $160. I know that these both are at the low end of the cost line, but I only get to muskie fish one 10 day trip a year, so hard pressed to spend more. I know that there are others out there like the Ticas that are beteen that cost, but don't know anything about them.

For reference, I have a G Loomis jerkbait rod, I think 7', a Daiwa Heartland about 6'9" (Like how that rod fishes) and a St Croix Premier 6'9" or 7'. Plus have a 6'3" Cabela's brand that rarely gets used any more. I have continued to creep up on length but 8' is a jump.

Any recommedations between the two? Is the St. Croix worth almost twice the cost of the Fig Rig?

I just picked up an 8' MH Fenwick HMX this year and it's really nice. Very light weight and the handles are nice. That ran me $95 so that's another one to throw into the bucket.

I believe Rollie and Helen's has (or will soon have) some of the new Okuma rods. Not sure if they have an 8'er in stock, but the 8'6 telescoping should be there. For your first leap into the longer rods, would be a great move.

I throw the 8' St Croix everythime I am in the boat, it is a great rod for throwing Bucktails and Cranks. Once you move to 8' you wish you wouls have gone to 9' just for the figure 8 purposes. I own an 8' Fig heavy as well and like to throw big cranks bulldawgs and topwaters on it.

I would highly recommend the 8' St. Croix! Been using mine pretty much all day here at the Goon throwing spinnerbaits and top water all day long. The rod is just amazing. Not to mention the warranty this rod comes with, plus it's a St. Croix. But otherwise, that Okuma Slamr was talking about seems to be a very nice rod also!
