I know you stated you didn't want to spend a pile of money on them but I must say, after using the Knipex from a buddy of mine, it didn't take long to realize why they are so much. I would highly recommend the Knipex. By far the best out there. They cut hooks like it's cutting butter. Plus, they will hold up a life time versuses a cheap pair might rust or just not hold up over the years. Just my opinion.

I bought these and have been happy with them so far, they cut through hooks just fine and only cost $18. Considering that they are kind of a high risk item of falling in the lake I'll take the $18 pair any day and replace them as needed since you can buy 2 pairs of these at the price of 1 pair of Knipex, but I'm sure they aren't quite as nice, you pay for what you get most of the time.

The life of a Knipex versus some of the average stuff on the market is probably 4 to 5 times longer, maybe even longer than that. So if I'm going to go through four $18 cutters in the same time I go through one $45 cutter, the math is pretty simple. Knipex gets the nod. Plus, when you have a hook stuck in your hand you don't want a cutter that might struggle to free you from a thrashing musky. My health is worth more than a couple of bucks.

Knipex, you won't be sorry.

I have 2 of the cheap small bolt cutters that are the size of a regular pliers. I have not needed anything more than these, they work fine for me. Got mine at the local hardware store. I may not spend as many days per year on the water as a lot of the guys on here though. Did have the bait in fish & in my thumb at the same time once though, & it worked just fine. Not a lot of fun when you have a 28" pike flopping around with your hand attached to it by a hook. Have yet to replace the middle treble on that grandma...

I can also vouch for the quality of Knipex Cobolt cutters. I used a cheap pair of no-name bolt cutters that I bought at Sears for a number of years, but last year I decided to bite the bullet and buy a Knipex. I've had to cut hooks on a couple of fish with the Knipex and there is no comparison to the old cheapos. Knipez wins hands down. One tip: I've seen the Knipex cutters sold for $45-$60 bucks in musky catalogs and publications, but remember they are industrial bolt cutters. I did some searching on the internet and found them for about $34 from an industrial tool supplier. Save the extra money so you can buy more lures.

Another vote for Knipex. Ive used a few other pairs and none of them came close to the ease with which the Knipex cut through hooks. We had some trouble in the boat about a week ago when my buddies dog found himself pinned to a DDD on the front deck of the boat. We got the barbs pushed through and cut in no time at all...I don't think that the pooch even realized what had happened. I wouldn't have wanted to be in that situation, or any situation where I am hooked(or hooked to a fish) without a pair of Knipex in the boat. Other brands will get the job done but I wouldn't want to take the chance...and I am more at ease knowing that they are in the boat if something goes wrong. I'm partial to the spring action cutters but the other styles work just as well. Drill a hole in the handle and attach a lanyard to ensure that they don't go too far if you happen to dump them in the drink(unfortunately I learned this the hard way). You definitely won't be disappointed with the purchase.

THA4,

Try www.jacksonlures.com. They sell their Knipex for approximately $5 to $10 less than anyone else.
Ed is on vacation until July 30. I'd wait a couple of days to order 'em.

I keep one pair up front, and one in the rear of my rig.

I have always had great experiences dealing with this place. One of the cheapest places I could find, they always returned my emails and free shipping over 100.00. http://chadstoolbox.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=358

I like my knipex's, my buddy got them for me from where he works,
How ever, lowes sells a pair of kobolts (I believe) that cost 15 bucks. another friend of mine has been usuing them for two years without a problem, they have stainless steel jaws ,when i chided about them, he took a out 6 penny nail and cut it into 4 pieces without a hitch.i've seen them in action cutting everything from hooks to cable to s hooks on his trailer. if i didnt already have a pair, i would definatley buy a pair of those kobolts.

Eric, those definitely saved a big pain for the pooch. I definitely agree with the Knipex. They got all the hooks that weren't in the dog (thankfully only one found it's way in) off the bait, and the one that we pushed through was out in seconds.

Definitely don't skimp on these, cause if the hooks in you, you know that it's not going to be a problem taking care of the removal.

Yet another vote for knipex! As a bait maker I've cut thousands of pieces of hardened stainless steel coil with them and they're still able to cut with ease. I even have a back up pair which I've not had to use as of yet.

Look at how many baits you have, rods and reelss to throw them with....all to catch a fish. How much did all of that cost you. Now imagine of of those baits in your arm, your hand, your leg, your butt...and I've heard of worse!

Dont go cheap, buy the best!

-Attention shameless self promotion attached-

I have the answer for the expensive Knipex cutters falling into the drink, along with not losing all of your needed release tools UPMUSKY PRODUCTS RELEASE KITS, either the "Basic" model (with Economy grade cutters) or the "Pro" model with the "KNIPEX" cutters. All tools are lanyarded into the kit and there is flotation value built into the kit so it won't sink. Just coming out with a "SOFTY" kit also. The kits can be seen at www.upmuskyproducts.com, either buy them off the site or the are available at http://www.muskytackleonline.com, Musky Hunter online store, Rollie and Helens, Smokeys Musky shop...Randy

They can also be seen at the WMT tournaments or the Wisconsin Musky Clubs Alliance Tourney in Eagle River. Muskie Inc. has also used them for their calender sales promotion.

I use Knipex, there the best hands down and i also carry a second backup pair of cheap ones just in case something happens.I fear for you fishing without a pair of any kind, even though you have never had to use them YET.I would not go muskie fishing without a pair,to many bad things can happen out there without the proper gear.

I used to figure I'd buy a few pairs of cheap ones instead of knipex. I've been replacing them every year....the cheap ones are not worth it. Get the Knipex.

Knipex.
I thought they were a gimick, until I used a pair.
If you are worried about them ending up in Davey Jones Locker, duck tape a dummy cord to one of the handles, and loop it around your wrist, before using.
$ well spent.

I've had that cheaper pair that Thornes has and it took until my wife was trying to cut the hooks out of my hand to realize how bad they were. As she twisted those hooks in my hand I vowed that I was done with the cheapies. You get what you pay for, and for my health and for the clean release of the fish I catch I go with knipex and won't consider anything else.

Even thieves prefer Knipex! I just replaced mine this weekend when I stopped at R&H's. They were kiped last month at a bar & grill. The only thing the lowlife took. Perhaps he thought all the exposed Shad Raps, and Wally Divers were too small for muskies?

I caught a fish yesterday that I'm pretty sure I would have killed without a pair of Knipex hook cutters. A 37.5 incher hit a Weagle 10 feet or so from the boat. When I got it in the net I went "Oh no." The rear hook of the Weagle was WAAAYY up inside the gills coming from the outside. The fish must have got hooked on the front hook, and the rear swung around and into the gill area. It was so far in that the tail of the Weagle was holding the gill cover partially open.

When I looked in there, I couldn't hardly even see the hook. But, with some veerrryy careful wiggling, I pushed one barb through and cut it. The other two I could only get the very nose of the cutters on the hook, but it snipped them off, even with the bad leverage for cutting. A cheap pair would have never cut those hooks off like that with the hook right at the beak of the cutter.

As it was, a fish that had all three points of a treble BURIED in it's gill area released very strongly without shedding a drop of blood or one ripped gill. I'll never go without the Knipex.

Go with the Knipex. I love them. My first time around I bought the cheap $10 pair and they rusted out within a few years.
I got my knipex from Jackson Lures. It's the best price I found.... http://www.jacksonlures.com/Commerce2/Knipex.htm
