When you first get on the lake and not sure the activity level of the fish, how fast do you work a top water bait like a pace maker or low rider?

I just pick these up and only have tossed them a couple of time from the dock.

Thanks

Just fast enough so they make the right sound. I also like to fish them slower.

I like to work the pacemaker and other prop type baits fast. Side to side like the Viper, Weagle much slower but I would never use them as search baits like a prop bait.

You'll have to vary the speed on a low rider. I like to work it slow, but there are times where ripping it with a faster retrieve may be just the ticket. I think it is good to pause the low rider to help trigger the hit.

I feel the slow approach should be made for the first few casts. If nothing happens, rip it and fish it hard.....followed again by a slow retrieve.
And, if you see a fish following it, make a quick pause to help trigger the strike.

Prop baits are the best mindless top water "search baits" IMHO! You can also use chuggers and Zara Spook types pretty dog gone fast for search baits too.

Creepers and Hog Wobbers are real slow movers and should only be used if you are sure you are on fish, or a pattern. Depending on how slow you are working the prop bait, (or ZS) I would include this in with the slow movers and want to be on fish or a pattern before committing to that presentaion 100%.

This should help to answer at least part of ci's question. BTW, I have caught plenty of fish while moving the prop bait at "roll over speed"... so have at it.

i work the pacemaker at different speeds.. I wouldnt worry to much about how to work them, just put some time in and the fish will show you what they like.

I always speed the bait up with a happy hump... interesting.
