my wife likes reading books as her hobby--half priced books at that. Oh, and no kids to support other than the inner child.

Hell, if I was married and I had kids I wouldn't be able to afford fishing at all! But then I suppose I wouldn't care...

The secret to financial success is not how much money you make, it's making a point to save money, even if you have to take 10% out of every paycheck and bury it in the yard.

EA, what kind of return do you get on those back yard investments?

Has to be better than I did trading online six or seven years ago.

Talk about a lesson learned.

When I was approaching 30, I had a small jon boat and a 1952 Johnson 10 my dad gave me. When my son approached 16, I got my big Gambler boat, and we shared many, many good times on it together. That right there was worth the money. Now, last night, he tells me I'm gonna be a grandpa. time flies, so don't sweat it, you'll get there. m

I own two muskie/fishing lure companies as well as a (no laughing!) a cosmetic company on the side to make extra money. Life is good but very busy...

a cosmetic company.... AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA haha ha. Ooh, give me a minute, sorry you said no laughing. Just kidding man, anything that helps feed the need is a good thing.

I graduated from Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Ia with an AAS in Civil and Construction Engineering Tech. I moved to mason city, IA and work as a computer aided drafter. Its a long cry form a 6 figure income but I live in an apartment, rent a storage unit for my boat. Have only me, myself and I too worry about (besides my fishing and hunting partners, aka friends and family), and I hunt and fish more than most. Its a good life, wouldn't trade it for millions... unless of course that ment I could fish and hunt more. The key is too look for quality trucks and boats that are used, depriciation can be to your favor.

I am not sure how I was able to get my boat. I am a teacher, so I obviously don't make a lot of money, but I do work a second job in the summer and coach 3 sports to supplement my income.

I just turned 29. No kids yet and.........

I am lucky to have a wife who supports my habit, that is a huge plus!!!!

I work for a potato farm selling potatoes and doing the finances. Oh yeah, I have a guide business as well.

The way I can afford a shiny new Tuffy every year started way back with my first boat. Buy what you can afford, don't over pay, and build equity. Going into boat two I had about $5000 in equity so I upgraded. Second boat I had about 10,000 in equity, so another upgrade was in order. On and on and now I have found a dream ride in the Tuffy 1890DS. I sell one every year so I am always in a new ride. It took a while to get here, but the wait was worth it.

Like anything else in life (to borrow a phrase from Hopeful) it is best to have a plan and work into it.

I have 6 years working with OutdoorsFIRST. From the salary I make here, I can buy 2 or 3 boats per quarter. Anyone want one, I've got extras laying around if anyone would like to borrow a new boat for a few months? My "boat shed" is right next to the "free stuff to give out" warehouse we have here at O1st HQ in Aruba.

Well I'm 29, married w/ 3 kids and 2 dogs. My wife makes ok money and as well as I do so we have a modest home w/ 40 acres (fairly cheap real estate where we bought). I am a mechanical engineer and currently work at a mining company. I used to work with Fisher up in Warroad but the wife didn't care for the area to much (to small!) I was able to get my first boat last year and it's nothing special but will last me (or actually satisfy me) for a while. We could do better managing our finances but with 3 kids in daycare that adds up to more than most peoples mortgage. So summer time I'm fairly broke when it counts.

I'm a fisheries biologist working with salmon habitat in the state of Oregon. I also have a very busy lure making business in my spare time.

Out here we do alot of drifting for salmon/steelhead so my first boat was a drift boat....still have it! My first powerboat a 19' deep-v aluminum for big river fishing I bought new about 3 years ago. If I could do it all over again I would have bought the power boat when my sons were still young.

at the moment......30years old, wife, three girls,im a office manager for a oil company, and before things get fired up on prices...im just the middle man. we distribute gas/oil from pipeline to customer.(you would be very suprised on how much we dont make off of fuel.) paycheck isnt very large, but i have insurance paid for and some retirement setup. anyway...got my wife going through travel agent school for the next six months to maybe help on the high cost of things these days, including trying to get our new house built.

use to have a lawn service taking care of 24 yards and still working full time. sold out,and got back a normal life of fishing. the service paid off my debt and got me into a boat and profited enough on the last three boats to just have about 6000.00 of my own money in a fully loaded "08 G3 v172t. now i need to find a way to pay off the remaining balance of my new house????

I worked for the City that I live in for over 30 years. Doing everything from picking up garbage....when you really picked up and dumped cans by hand....to road maintenance, with the last 15 years working for the water dept. doing everything from reading meters and installing them to fixing broken water mains all winter long and taking care of all the hydrants.
Now I'm 51 and retired on a disability with a degenerating back.
I'd gladly go back to work, if I could have my back back.

51 as of yesterday, wife, 2 kids, new house, dog, cat, John Deere, Polaris ATV, old truck, and 2 newer cars. I am an electrical engineer since 1982. Bought my first boat with my brother, a new 1983 Lund Mr Pike with a Merc 50. Single console, and this was a fancy boat. Paid around $4000, and some thought we were crazy to spend that kind of money on a fishing boat! We kept that boat a few years, and then I had a couple used boats, but not as nice. I got my first Tuffy in 88, and then a new one in 91. That was a Rampage tiller. Had a couple more Tuffy's, and then in 02, I got a Lund Angler SS, 135 Opti, Kicker, lates electronics, AP TM, cover, custom trailer, the works. Had that one 4 years, and this year got another Tuffy. This one is the best by far, and the most expensive.

I've worked steady for a long time(30+ years) to afford what I do now. Money is no object, but I don't exactly throw it away. It takes time to get to where I am. SO my advice is to always save something, and don't touch it! And don't over extend just for a boat.

Hopeful:

Seriously -- Sit down with a financial advisor. All you guys, no matter where you're at in life -- take a night or two out of your life and talk to one.

Even if you think you're on the right track they can make sure. Tell them what you want and they help you get there, whether its a comfortable retirement or a house in the Hamptons.

I'm 46. My wife and I own a residential real estate appraisal business. On paper, she owns it and I work for her. Business has been good for the last eight years, but up and down the last twelve months. Really down the last three weeks.

I don't own a boat. Just took up fishing last year. I could afford to buy a really nice boat I guess, but need to fish a little more to prove to the wife I'm serious. She has a hard time taking me seriously, as those who know me might understand. If I buy a boat, I would need a tow vehicle. My Bonneville is probably not that vehicle. I've paid cash for my last several vehicles, but to buy a boat and tow vehicle would require a loan for one of the two.

Sunk a fortune into my house last year, so the boat is still out there in the future somewhere.

Now that I know Slamr has several boats just sitting around, (he's been holding out on me), I may make him some Nueske's bacon and a few pork chops and convince him to give me one of his.

I am the Executive Editor of an Iowa Fishing and Hunting magazine. (The Iowa Sportsman) this is a labor of love, as i make just enough to get buy. i have an incredibly supportive and understanding wife who encourages me to pursue my passions. we have been married 4.5 years, with our first child on the way, due in November....(the best week of Iowa's Bow Season....what was i thinking????).
i bought my first boat last year, a 14' flatbottom Jon boat, which i poured myheart and soul into. i put casting decks in it, a bow mount & a transom trollling motor, 2 fish finders and a few rod holders. then this spring on the way back from MN, i got rearended and totaled my boat (The Green Hornet, Tournament Edition) a couple weeks ago, with the insurance money i purchased a 16' Lund with a 40 HP Johnson. which is currently in the shop getting a carb kit and a new lower unit seal/water pump put in....
i miss her, and cant wait to get back on the water.
My wife works and together we bought our first home this year. we have made a few mistakes in our past and are paying (literally) for them now. learn to hate Credit Cards.....they can bite you in the ass if you aren't using them appropriately....
but we live well and enjoy life.
tomorrow is not guaranted, dont miss a moment!!

I retired from the Air Force in 05 after 24 yrs of service. Since then, I have been working for one of the big defense contractors as an Sr. Analyst supporting Air Force IT systems acquisition programs. I have a beat up 19' run-about that's pushing 22 yrs old I bought from my father in law some time ago that I have turned into a muskie machine. Daughter is in college taking up the bulk of my free cash. My son will be a Sr. in high school and has expressed an interest is the military (makes dad proud). I am also working on my MBA that really limits my free time. Hope to purchase a dedicated muskie boat in the next year or two as a reward for finishing the MBA program.

Got two killer labs (chocolate and yellow) for duck and grouse hunting, and NO kids! Got a 94 skeeter that I hope to upgrade in the next couple years. I never answered the question.

I draw stuff (CAD). I also sing, play guitar, piano, and teach voice on the side. If it wasn't for the fact that my parents are generous people and let me live in their house, I wouldn't have a pot to whiz in. Unlike Hopeful, I planned ahead. When I thought I was getting married I KNEW my wife to be wouldn't let me buy a boat if I had nothing to tow it with, so I bought a truck. Then I realized that you can't drive a full sized truck everywhere, and that I would need a car too. When I bought a car (instead of an engagement ring) the wife-not-letting-me problem went away completely. So I took up muskie fishing, figured it was cheaper than a wife. (Boy was I wrong)

On the plus side, muskies don't care if I leave my socks on the floor. They also don't care if I drink beer, fart, belch, scratch myself or say ####. Like my ex girlfriends, they are unpredictable, they like expensive shiny things, they're mean, they pretty much do what they feel like when they feel like it, and when they open their mouth you better watch out.

Like Kevin, I need a boat. I REALLY need a boat. I even know where to get one, but the guy selling it named it after a panda. I'm afraid he might paint it black and white.

Been in the auto repair business going on 40 years. Never going to be rich, but it kept me employed no matter where I moved to, and for the first 20 years of my married life I moved a lot. Was able to support a stay at home mom and 2 boys.

The key for me was to NEVER buy toys on credit. Always had a 'fun' savings account to support my puchases. Like Norm, built up equity, and bought what I could afford, not always exactly what I wanted, but enabled me to pursue my passions.

A lot of young people today are too impatient and that can lead to financial problems. You learn how to make do with what you can afford.

44 years young, 4 kids, and ex-wife ... lived on water growing up and boats and fishing have been a part of life. i'm a chemical engineer with an mba and a masters in life experience so have learned that the "play-hard" side of the coin is equally as important as the "work-hard" side so i've invested in hobbies and included my family along the way. first boat after being married was an aluminum river boat with a 75hp outboard ... duck-hunted and bass fished with that one which was pretty innexpensive, went to a boston whaler for safety reasons and made it work for fishing when the kids were young, went to the current boat as they've gotten bigger but also use it for entertainment purposes for my business either taking customers out for pleasure cruises around the midwest or out to fish ...

boating is a lifestyle choice that i've made ... it limits choices in other areas, but for where i live (minocqua area) and what i like to do it's a pretty logical choice.

all that being said, if i couldn't afford the boat i have i'd still have a boat and would be out there on the water. boats are only as expensive as your expectations, beyond that .... they all float

35 this month. 6'1" full figured brunette, well what's left of it anyways.......errrr....I digress.....

Been married almost 6 years now, no kids yet, two cats. Recently moved to KY from FL and made out bigtime on our house which allowed us to upgrade our living quarters significantly for reasonable cost. Plus cost of living is cheaper too. She's got a good job and we moved with her promotion. I've been in residential construction (i.e. build what some CAD tech draws) for the last 10years and made a good amount of cash and spent most. Luckily found a good job here building apartments, around the country so I have some travel. Bought a '02 Corvette Z06 for cash while in FL, had it less than a year and sold it when we moved so I could buy a boat('05 Basscat Pantera IV) since I'd be near musky water! We're fortunate and have a great life. Anxious now to have a little one though. I grew up fishing in a 14' Mirrocraft with a 9.9 Evinrude usually fishin' four guys! Now I'm in a 19.5' glass boat that'll do 70mph. Saw the same model boat I grew up in on our second trip out and commented to my wife how unbelievable it is to have such nice things.

I'm a fisheries biologist as well, working on forage fish and habitat related issues on Lake Erie's western basin. Its a great gig, but a little too far to get to muskies for my taste. No boat currently, sold my 15' Cajun bass boat just before leaving grad school in South Dakota; didn't figure it would be all that safe on Erie! Want a good fishing boat and tow vehicle more than anything right now, but with a stay at home wife and two little ones, I think I'm going to have to keep being a boat bum for a while. Wouldn't trade my girls for Slamr's whole fleet!

Age 42, AAS in Industrial Electronics. I work for a consulting engineer designing water and wastewater treatment systems. That allows for a modest home in a modest neighborhood, 8-yr old truck pulling a 15-yr old Tuffy. Just checked the balance sheet the other day, and considering everything, me, wife and two daughters are comfortably in the black. But, that's on paper of course.

It's easy to be envious of the folks living in big houses, driving new trucks with new boats in tow. They're all over the place. Then I think about their balance sheets and decide it's better to live modestly, pay cash for good used stuff, take care of it and keep it a long time.

I was a full time union rep for a few years and decided not to run for re-election when I decided I was going to retire. I became a widower after 32 years in 2001 and remarried just last Dec. she also has a very good paying job.
A condo near Madison for sale and a very nice cabin in the U.P. for sale as we plan to purchase a home in the Minocqua-Eagle River-Rhinelander area so I can devote alot more time to fishing and the outdoors.
I have had three boats in my life and my current one, which I bought new, is 10 years old and has less than 100 hours on it. 17 ft MirroCraft 115 Mariner and all the rest of the goodies needed to hit the water.
Made enough mistakes early in life with finances just like everyone else, but was able to get my head straight and turn things around, things sure turned out better.
Live within your means, and you will always be ok, and if you save a little at a time, it sure adds up.

Look out fish, here I come!!

I am divorced too. I bought a boat when i was 16 and drove up to southern wisconsin and fished alot of the lakes around there. Got married, had three kids and worked and equitized(a word?) by rebuilding and selling the three houses we bought. Had a huge old farmhouse on some acreage too. Divorce, fighting to keep my kids in the state all the way to the supreme court left me without so much as a savings account at 40. Am 43 now but 32% off the top will keep me from owning a house anytime soon, so I can live with my parents and musky fish, and do fun things with my kids when I have them. Date, yeah, women love 43 year old guys who live with their parents, lol, and not fish, or live in an apartment and do none of it. Need the job, need the 5 weeks vacation. I have 30 muskies so far this year, want to guess what plan I picked?

29 years old, wife and one beautiful baby girl. I am fortunate enough to have a job I love, working in the sign industry. I'm lucky and had parents whom taught me to be responsible with my money. I finally saved up enough to buy my first boat this past year. It is not new or big, but it is what I could afford at the time. More importantly, is I am very happy with it. I agree with ESOXER..."live within your means"... He nailed it on the head.

Well, seems Im of a younger hair on here. Im 26 yrs old, I operate a laser for a cutting die manufacturer, I also draw stuff with cad, usually making musky baits, etched designs, gov. work to say the least.
I own a house, have a 2 yr old daughter, not married, (came really close!) wasn't the one for me.
Went through many little 14 ft junker boats, lots of leaks, crappy motors, always fixing them up and selling them. Eventually I bought just a creastliner 16.5' plane jane boat, put a floor in it, customized it to my liking, added a brand spankin new 50hp tiller, and for the last 4 years, been putting extras on it like a new trolling motor, lots of musky slime, and just this year finally bought myself an Lcx-27c, man do I wish I fished as much as I did a few years ago!

If you have it bad enough for this sport, If you eat, sleep, breath, and dream muskies, you will find a way to make it happen..... bottom line, when you want something bad enough, you have to make it happen for yourself, or, just marry a rich girl and have her buy you one!
Those guys still can't catch muskies though......
