| I will be switching trailers soon. I will be going from a 4 flat with surge brakes to a 5 flat with disc brakes. My question is... will I need an electronic brake control box installed in order for my brakes to work? One person tells me yes, while another says no. The one who said no says the electric impulse will travel through the 5 flat. If it matters at all I am towing a Alumacraft Navigator 185. Thanks in advance for any insight.

| The only reason for an electronic brake box is if your trailer has electric brakes. Odds are it's got surge brakes. The 5th pin is wired to your reverse lights and activates a solenoid when backing up, so your trailer brakes don't apply. |

Make sure you have your reverse lights rigged to your trailer otherwise you'll not be able to back up.
Also...just learned this...sometimes the dealer will have a pin inserted in the brake surge so they can back them up w/o the brakes activating. Make sure that pin is out. |
