Greetings,

I have tried everything and just cannot get my recently purchased 2002 Merc 2 stroke to troll down to low speeds decently. I guess I expected some of this with the bigger 2 stroke(still running a 40 hp yammy with no issues on my other rig), but I'll need to make a change to do any amount of trolling, not to mention I wouldn't mind a queter, less stinky motor for my structure holding/position casting. I'd rather not put a kicker on this rig, so my question is what motor would be best to fill my needs. Any advice on some of the fuel efficient two strokes? Does Yammy make a motor similar to an E-tec or Opti? Would prefer yammy though would consider looking elsewhere for the best overall performance.

Dad has a 90 etec and it is a bit of a dog at top end for some reason on his 16' Nvigator(I've heard of this issue with this hull before though). His also does not like to troll under about 2.75 mph at its current setup. Right now, my boat gets up on plane ok and tops out at about 36.5 mph with two guys and all our gear. I wouldn't mind a slight loss in top end but would hate to lose alot, and any hole shot. The 690 tiller is only rated for a 90(UUGGHHH!!), and I would hate to slap a 90 Yamaha 4 stroke on it and realize it didn't have a decent hole shot.

Does anyone have experience with this or a similar rig that can give me some recomendations from them?? I'd love to get the rating increased so I could eliminate all question and slap a 115 4 stroke on it, but I don't see that ever happening. I like the trolling features on the Yamaha 90, but would like to know how others have faired with similar setups. If I could be sure of the hole shot, and not losing considerable top end, I'd go for it.

Thanks in advance.

Jason Your dads 16 foot navigator should fly with a 90 on it! It has no top end because he has TOO much pitch...the motor doesn't have the power to spin the prop...motor is probably not reving high enough...he needs to try a lower pitch prop. Now your ordeal, buy a hub kit for your merc to run some yammy props, I think they about 35 bucks or so. I have a 17,18,19 pitch prop you can try to see if that helps, right now on my lund 1800 I am running a 17 pitch black steel prop, I get about 36 gps with the 17 and about 38 with the 18 pitch but the 18 takes me to low in rpm's so I stick with the 17 because 2 mph is no big deal ALSO the 17 will troll slower, the less pitch the slower you will be able to troll but you will also lose some at the top end. Find out what prop you are running and I can help you from there. like I said you are welcome to try any props I got call me when you find out. later Mike

Jason, how slow are you wanting to go?

2.25 is as slow as I'd ever need to go, and most of the time 2.5 is waaay slow enough. The merc will drop to about 2.47 but spits and sputters and just seems to run better at about a grand and 2.8+. Don't like the noise either. I have been used to a quiet motor for years, and would like one for this boat too. How about Suzuki?? Any differences in power between 4 strokes out there?

Yep, them bigger 2 strokes will spit and spuutter. If you have you mind made up, any of the 4 strokes are good these days. Pick one, and don't look back. But I seem to recall people saying the 4 strokes don't troll as slow as the 2 strokes. I can't confirm, as I never had a big 4 stroke.

That said, JoMusky trolls with his 200 EFI, and DaveJ trolls with his 75 2 stroke. I don't know if either has many complaints. I would expect they use more gas than a kicker. Kicker may be the less expensive option vs trading in on a new main motor.

If you keep that motor, and you want to slow that boat down some, try a couple 20-25" drift bags, on 6' lines, off the front cleats on either side. Keeps the front of the boat down in the waves, and helps with the stability, as well as slowing it down.

Thanks shep. I am not sure how Jomusky does it, but that motor seems to run ok like that. That said, I think that tank boat of his has enough 'drag' with that 450 lb Chesepeke along, that he could troll with any motor. I thought about kicker option, but don't want to go there. I just don't beleive I need it, if only for an insurance bet, knowing how dependable todays rigs are. I heard on another site, that a dude is trolling down to 1.9 with his 90 suzuki 4 stroke. I think I am leaning that way. Now just need to decide whether to sell my merc outright or trade. I might be better of trading for unrigging/rigging purposes...

Jason, I troll with my 115 yammi and it trolls down to just under 2.0 with no problems. The only time I go that slow is on Lake Michigan, but it's nice to know I can troll down that low. It's quiet as all can be, and gets my boat up on plane fast. (unless Shep's in the back, then it drags a second or two longer. lol).

You'll love a Yammi if you go with it. I'm sure the 90 4 banger is just as solid. No complaints from this guy, and I think I'm on my 3rd season with it. I just use the factory prop as well. I'm a meat and potatos guy when it comes down to it, so I don't like (or know how) to monkey with it to get a few extra mph out of it. I do quite a bit of trolling with it as well, and have had no issues as of today.
