We got out for a couple hours last night. Sue missed a low 40" class fish and had a 4' class fish on long enough to see it well. It rolled on the surface and spit the spinnerbait back at her, eliciting a few choice words.
Wind is strong east today, bad for the structure I like on this end of the lake. We'll be traveling a bit this morning!
Pike were good. We got 4 between 31 and 33 and a few smaller fish.
Moved one other muskie on a Rumbler, about a 4 footer that missed the lure and a few minutes later grabbed Sue's son Paul's spinnerbait(he's following us in another boat). He lost her on a head shake.
Multi-specie today...

OK- Steve, What's your definition of "absolutely nasty"? Knowing you it must have been a little "sporty". We had some real "rip snorter" thunder storms up by Kenora (Dogtooth) earlier last week- water over the roads- some secondary roads washed out etc. After the storms, the owner at Dogtooth Resort went to check on his outpost cabin about an hour north of Kenora. The road was gone! Luckily no one was in the cabin last week. He said the road may be out for 3 weeks.
Have fun! Stick one of those Goon fatties- better yet, stick a whole herd of them.

East wind and rain, then East wind, strong. Bad for the Goon. MAN it's tough out there right now; the fish seem to have packed up and moved since the front went through. Our group got one Muskie today. I saw a nice fish, probably a shade under the 50 mark, on a Suick, and the bite was over for the day. Waiting for Sue to wake up from a nap, than back at 'em.....
Walleyes are easy right now. Big fish pods are on the 9 to12' breaks in the main channel, and the fish just under protected slot on the reef tops. We are headed out Tuesday to get that out of our systems, all day chasing multi-specie stuff. I've never seen a May Fly hatch this heavy, we have been covered in 'em for two days. Hitchhikers.....

The year classes on the Goon are strong and the future here looks very bright! I lost ANOTHER pig last night...the fish blasted a spinnerbait in 2' on the back side of the weeds, did a few under-the-water head shakes and went North on me. Lost THREE yesterday, the other two were mid to upper 40" class. Lots of those here, if I could just keep 'em stuck.

thankfully they're protected with the progressive limits in place in Canada now.
wish i was up there...Indian Point Camp will probably be the site of my daughter's first Canadian trip in 5 or 6 years. such a great multi-species lake to keep both of our interest!
now go out and stick one of those bruisers so you can stick your own smiling mug on the cover page, Steve!

The Pike today were really going; Sue and I boated a 30, 33, 35.5, 36, 36, and a 42.5. Only saw one muskie, but it was a HOG. Sorta clipped the Violent Strike, and swam back under her lilly pad cover.

Slow week with the cold water and cold fronts. 9 muskies for 6 'muskie' anglers. No one in camp was anywhere near as serious as I was except for a few folks who were just getting introduced to the Goon way of Muskie angling ( that group left Tuesday, I think, but will be back, right Coach?), and I was not there just to Muskie fish this trip. We spent allot of time casting jigs and cranks at reefs for pike and walleyes, and WAY more time relaxing in the cabin than on a 'Muskie' trip I'd take up there. All in all, it was exactly the trip I had planned and hoped for except the fishing for Pike was VERY tough. I'd personally just as soon catch a Pike over 41" as a Muskie mover 48". Tougher, in my opinion, on most waters.
By the way, DJS, if I was after numbers I'd head for the NW Angle or Sabaskong. I saw one fish this week I'd have classified as ONE I'd go to the Goon to catch. Saw three others in the 'acceptable' class from 25# to about 40#, and l had my chances...We fished Muskies about 50% of our time on the water this trip.
Every cast into that water is a possible true horse Pike, Walleye, or Muskie, and I don't have to share 'my' water with a soul. I have taken walleyes to 13# fishing for Muskies there, including an 11# Weagle 'Eye.
The folks at Indian Point Camp truly defined hospitality, even to the extent of taking my busted trailer hub into town for repair so Sue and I could go walleye fishing that morning. The Wednesday evening fish fry was excellent, and the Ladies Night at the Muskie Lounge was a nice touch; Sue had a blast and the homemade wine was very good, according to Debbie.
By the way, to answer guest's question, one needs to pay very close attention to the current and forage there to find the big 'eyes. Every reef in the lake holds smaller fish, but the big girls are there and in numbers, just gotta know where to look for them. Look for the results from the In Fisherman Professional Walleye trail Super Pro event in two weeks on http://www.walleyefirst.com. I'll be covering that event in great detail, and some of the best of the best of the walleye world will be fishing the Wabigoon system. Where are you staying?

No need to get defensive Steve. Thanks for the response. As far as sharing 'my' water with a soul it sounds a bit like Lac Seul or any of a dozen other shield lakes.

Not defensive, descriptive. Quite a bit like Seul, yes, but fewer muskie anglers. I saw one other Muskie boat all week; a couple in a Crestliner fishing the North Shore bays. That, I am sure, will change as folks discover how well the Goon and Dinorwic are doing. This is an impoundment, so far from a Shield lake it's not even in the same universe! there are three clear water lakes that feed into the Goon, but the really big girls ( upper 1% limit at 60# according to Casselman, if I remember correctly) live in that clay laden water...

Hi Steve, just a little info for you. Be glad you were up there when you were. Just got back and I would have to say it was the worst fishing ever for me. (was up there last year, same week as you, red tuffy) Our family total was 1 musky and about a dozen pike that were in the slot. Very few small pike also. Weather killed us, on tuesday a front arrived that broke both docks and the 5 foot rollers made fishing impossible. The rest of the week was big north winds with rain/thunderstorms almost nonstop and highs in the upper 50's. Seemed like September to me.

Dinorwic is clearer than the Goon, has similar structure but not as much shallow weed cover. Fish populations are similar, but Pike average bigger, I think because there is less pressure. It's part of the Chain, just above the Goon.
I heard the weather was tough up there last week! I'm headed back up for the PWT to cover the event and get some press out on the water. I hope it warms up some without hitting the 90's.

Brian -- I was up north near you last week , cold front/ winds were brutal . Fires at night are for may and oct , not july ! We could not move any big fish, did catch some small-medium ones. MD
