| Hi guys,
I need some help shipping a rod. I broke an 8' shimano compre and need to ship it back to the factory. The post office tells me that because the tube is over the 108" limit (length+diameter) that is will cost something like a hundred bucks. I took it to a UPS store and they say basically the same thing.
Any suggestions on shipping an 8' rod?
Thanks,
Brett

| If it's the overall dimensions, I'd shove it in a smaller tube. It's already broke, right? |

Location: Ontario, California | Call Shimano and as for Dan Thornburn. He is in their customer service. Let him know about the shipping charges and ask if you can cut the rod off and send in the section with the model numbers. He should be ok with that. Most manufacturers allow that (we do) as it costs a ton to ship 8 foot rods. |

| If nothing else maybe get a hold of Keith Terlinden at Professional Edge. I know he ships a good number of rods over 8 feet. He can probably help you find a cheaper option. |

| I've shipped 8 ft musky rods with UPS a number of times without any problem. The last time I went to a UPS Store and they provided a hard cardboard tube about 4 inches in diameter and actually shipped three of my rods to the midwest. |

| Contact Shimano customer service. If this is a warranty issue they will send you a shipping label for Fed Ex. If it is not still on warranty try Fed Ex anyway. They are probably much less expensive. |

| 90% of mine go through FedEx. Make sure you use a 5 x 5 triangle box or under. If it is 6 x 6 the cost goes up.
Most of my shipping is around $24. If it is over 9 feet you can add another $100 on that.
I am sure they will let you cut it away from the first break so they can look at the original problem.
Hope that helps.

Location: IN | No way it costs anywhere near a hundred bucks to ship an 8' rod through the post office. I've shipped several rods through the USPS. Use the 3" mailing tubes stacked together to the necessary length. Priority mail should run you about $10 after the surcharge. With materials and insurance it shouldn't cost any more than $20. |

| I have never quite understood the shipping charges for rods. I recently had to ship rods, and I had no choice other than the Post Office or UPS. The Post Office wanted $56.00, and UPS was $38.00. I've ordered $19.95 rods from Cabela's and Bass Pro over the years with a minimal shipping charge added to the order. How could they afford to ship a twenty dollar rod if the shipping was that high? It's a bit strange. Actually, when I first took the rods in to the Post Office, the lady at the counter said the tube was too long to be shipped at all. I thought that was peculiar, since it was shipped to me! Turns out she measured wrong. |

| If you were talking about my post being over $100, that was for sticks over 9 feet.
USPS will not take them if they are over 108 total inches. That is length plus distance around the tube not diameter. USPS can be the cheapest but they have their limits on what they will ship. I will not send any stick that is over 7-6 in the mail.
Oh yea there was that time when the USPS bent a piece of PVC and a new custom Diamondback in half. Still not sure how that happened. The good thing is they still delivered it. Bad thing is they person that ordered it was not expecting a two piece rod.

| You should be able to find a pvc pipe where you can cut it the length of your rod, tape both ends. That's how my 8' rod was shipped to me.
It seems UPS is becoming more difficult to deal with lately. If you still have trouble, I'd check with DHL, as they seem to be friendlier to deal with.

it can easily cost that much.
shipping Priority Mail you are allowed only a certain amount of total cubic inches.
if you use shipping tubes with too large of a diameter, that extra volume is multiplied throughout the length of the whole tube and can put you over their total volume limit.
if you exceed the Priority limits, you're required to ship Parcel Post, and that's when it gets very expensive for a long tube.
the key is to make sure to use the smallest diameter tube you can find so as to keep the volume low allowing you to ship Priority for around $20. it's cheaper and (ironically) get there faster than Parcel.
i would not suggest "stacking" the 3 foot tubes to make one long 9 foot tube. i've done this and had problems with them being rough handled and the sections separating during shipping. find a source for single long shipping tubes or be sure to save the ones that you get when ordering rods.

Location: oswego, il | Go USPS, I have shipped 7'6" rods and it cost me 10 bucks. You need a carboard tube. UPS cost me 30 bucks. An 8ft rod can't be much more, you just need the right package. |
