| I have a friend that was born in rural Kansas in a home. It appears he’s never had an actual birth certificate. He is a citizen, home owner, and has a valid driver’s license. I know from going to Canada for many years, that a birth certificate is only asked for on occasion, but with all the heightened awareness it’s probably a good idea to have one on your person just in case. He wishes to obtain some sort of valid birth identification; any thoughts, ideas, or experience with a similar situation would be greatly appreciated.

| You pretty much are required to have a pass-port nowadays, so, there shouldn't be any trouble up there as long as he jumps through the hoops here.
Tell him to check into what is needed to get one, getter done, and go fish. |

Location: North Saint Paul, MN | I have been going to Canada for 16 years and have never been asked for a birth certificate. I never even bring one with me. They have always asked for just drivers license. Passports next year!! |

| YOu don't need a passport now and the requirement is being pussed back until 09. I have never been asked for a birth cert but who wants to drive 400 or 800 miles to get turned away. I would get a passport. |

Location: Downers Grove, IL | fyi - if you apply for a passport today, they're telling people to expect 10-12 weeks to receive it. They are way backlogged. Matter of fact, a buddy of mine submitted the paperwork and paid the extra $67 to have it "rushed" 5 weeks ago. He still hasn't seen it.
So if you're heading north within at least the next 5 weeks, save your money, don't pay the expedited service charge and bring drivers license (and birth cert. for those who have it) - and have a great trip! |

| A couple years ago I paid $13.00 to get a certified copy of my Birth Certificate. I took that, my driver's license, and some proof of insurance card I got from my car insurance guy. When I went to hand all the stuff to the Border Guard, he said he didn't need "that stuff", and only took my license. I've went to Canada 3 times since then, and have yet to be asked for anything other than my driver's license.
I understood that to fly into Canada THIS year, you DO need a Passport, but would not need a Passport to drive across the border until next year.
Common Sense guy, where did you see that they are pushing that back to 2009? I have not heard anything about that yet. I know there was talk about a tournament that people were thinking of having in Canada next year, but may have decided not to do it because of the whole Passport deal. If you're correct, they may need to rethink that plan. If anyone knows what the truth is about that, let me know. Thanks. |

Location: Madtown, WI | I read an article in the newspaper that due to the new restrictions on flying, they are swamped at getting through the passport applications and people were getting pissed since they couldn't fly since it is taking so long for them to get their passport, despite them applying within the recommended time period. Since then, they only require proof that your passport is in the process so you people can still get on the plane. They foresee the same issue coming up when they require a passport for driving across the border and are thinking about pushing back the policy until 2009. I'll try to find the article.

| We went this year for opener and We got searched going from the us side to the canuk side we were in immigration office for two hours they went back in my record to when i was 18 and then they couldn't find out if a court case was closed or not from 13 years ago!!!! so at the end of it they made me pay 200.00 to become a temp citzen of canada for a week!! Got a resident fishing license though
lmao so if your going and have any dui or owi or anything like that my advice would be pray you don't get searched going in because you won't be going in if they search you ( i don't have any dui or owi the court case was for a misdemenor obstructing charge that i don't even rember getting!!!!!) |

| I live 15 miles west of Detroit. Between my wife and I we Travel to Windsor once a week. They ALWAYS ask for our birth cert and drivers lic. |

Location: LOTW every chance I get | Living on the north side of the border, my understanding is this passport requirement is a U.S. initiative. In other words it is (or will be) required for travelling in to the U.S., not for getting in to Canada.
As far as the guy who paid $200.00 to become a "temporary Canadian citizen", sounds to me like the border guy collected himself a "tip" to allow the guy into the country. I wouldn't count on asking for that on your next trip. |

| No he was legit! He took me into the back room and interrogated me for about an hour. It was weird cause he was asking about stuff that happend almost 12 years ago! | I've been going through Warroad for the last 6 years and have never been asked for a birth cert. Only been asked for driver's license.
Also, never been asked about DWIs either.
The Passport requirement is a US initiative, not a Canadian initiative.

Location: Minnesota | I am getting a new passport next week (expididted). I called and it will only take a few days to a week. Expidite it or you will wait up to (and over) 6 months. Cost is minimal to expidite it vs. waiting 6 months.
