The Mid-Iowa Muskies Inc Chapter is doing some good work to save some muskies that have gone over the spillway at Brushy Creek. This is a fairly new muskie fishery. Fish have been going over the spillway where they do not stand a very good chance of living. The Iowa DNR would not do anything. This chapter took it upon them selves to transplant these fish. They went throught the proper channels to do so. The DNR said it was illegal for them to transplant the fish back to the main lake were they came from. But they did get to go ahead to do so. Here is a link of what they have done so far. Go to
www.midiowamuskies.com
then click on forum, then reports and then on Musky@brushy spillway.
Way to go guys.

Thanks for the props Sean! It has been a lot of fun and I think we have educated some of the public about what we are doing. They have all seemed to be very positive and supportive of our mission. In fact, last night, a guy caught a 30 incher and he VOLUNTEERED to take it back up over the hill to release it. Very cool deal! (see our link for a photo of "THE HILL".)

regardless of the species, it is really cool to see a group come together in the name of conservation!!

this is a mission that will open some eyes in the DNR, hopefully the right ones will see our devotion to the sport and jump on board with us as we improve the state of the fishery.

Thanks Sean!!

YOU GUYS ROCK!!! Some guys from M.I. (not sure what chapter) have also been doing the same at three mile lake, last I knew one guy had transported 12 fish alone with one measuring an impressive 50"es. My causin was there a little while ago and rescued two but he said there were like 8 more they seen but were unable to catch in the time he was there. It is so important to the fishery that you guys keep up the good work becouse the mid summer temps and catfisherman will kill lots of them otherwise.

I am working on a draft letter to the Iowa DNR, in our last meeting with them they were just on the deffensive and so far haven't showed any interest in improving the musky fishery. I'm not sure why its ok to keep a 30" musky below a spillway but not ok to walk it 80 yds up a hill and let it back into the lake!!!!!!

If thats illegal than I volunteer to be illegal anyday for the sake of our fishery, and good job on the education, I told some people at 3 mile that they taste horrible so there releasing some now also.

Hey Sean - met you at the MI boat show last week. I'm looking for a partner next Wed or Thurs - not sure which day yet. Thinking Miltona or Mille Lacs. Also lost one at the net on Alex this week and saw the biggest fish I've seen for that lake at dark, so that's a possibility too. Let me know if you want to jump in.

Its not weather they taste good or not, its weather the catfisherman and panfisherman think they taste good or not!

Do they taste good? Probably, sure not going to tell anybody considering keeping one that though. I don't like lying to people but I really don't like seeing muskies kept for the sake of dinner.

We have the same issue at our local lake. We finally were able to have a fence put in place to stop the fish from getting into the creek below the dam.

If you want to suggest a fence place, make the placement of the fence on the down stream side of the spillway. This way the fence can not harm the dam or the spillway but the fish can not pass.

When the flooding is over you can then return the fish. We are lucky in that the DNR will bring in their boat and shock the pool under the spillway.

Each spring large numbers of fish are returned to our lake. Think of the return on investment by getting a fence and returning the fish compared to stocking to replace the larger fish that can be lost.

The address below will get you to a page that shows the fence.

Great work guys!!!
Iowa has the potential to become a good muskie fishery, but it seems the DNR is content of keeping it as a crappie/catfish haven. Your work will eventually pay off.
Best of luck!!

Good Fishing partner, Jon, caught all five. but being the friend i am i accompanied him to the top....both being fat guys that are extreemly out of shape, it almost killed us. but, more fish are swimming where they belong.
im gonna try to post some pix here, so bare with me as i wrestle through this.
