Location: Algonquin, ILL | Sooner or Later we will need a Passport to get into and back from Canada / Mexico & the Caribbean, So you might as well get your application in now and avoid the last min rush as it is now it takes 6-8 weeks or more to get your Passport unless you pay extra bucks for same day service and for that you have to show up in person with a verified itinerary.
Just do it now and get it over with
Most Passport information can be found here: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

| Just remember if you don't like the idea of getting a passport, you need to write your representatives in congress and the senate. a passport will not be needed to ENTER CANADA, but you'll need it to back to the US.
This is not a Canadian initiative. |

| This is already a law, you need to be able to show you are a US citizen in order to get back into the country...It has always been this way. They have been lax in regards to Mexico and Canada over the years. They are getting tighter. Why would anyone want to not be able to prove they are a US citizen? Also the right border guard can hold you to it if they are in the mood...Ben |

Location: Minnesota | Just went through last week. You can also use a reciept to show that you applied for a passport. And for time, I work with a guy who is now 4 months out and they said he may wait another 2 months. I for one will just go pay the extra $$$ and get it in a day or two from one of hte many places you can expidite it. I have to get one in a month or two. Should be a joy! |

House Votes to Delay Implementation of? WHTI Until June 2009
Washington, DC - Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY-28), Chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, today announced that the House overwhelmingly voted to prohibit the implementation of Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) anytime before June 2009. ?The FY 2008 Homeland Security Appropriations? Bill passed by the House of Representatives today by a vote of 268 to 150.
In addition to delaying WHTI, the bill also included language authored by Rep. Slaughter to withhold $100 million from the funds required by the Department of Homeland Security to implement WHTI until DHS has determined if driver's licenses can be enhanced to meet the WHTI's requirements.
The Slaughter language also requires DHS to fully test its proposed passport card before making it publicly available and develop a plan for land implementation that will be shared with the public. Finally, Rep. Slaughter's provision requires that DHS submit a report to Congress on the success of the driver's license pilot program, and reveal its overall WHTI roadmap before being allowed to put the proposed WHTI documentary requirements into place.
"After over two and a half years of fighting against WHTI, I am pleased to see that Congress overwhelmingly rebuked the Administration today by delaying the implementation of the flawed program until mid-2009," said Rep. Slaughter. "We sent a clear signal that we don't trust the Administration to get WHTI done right."
"Travel and trade which cross the northern border every day between America and Canada are critical to our economy and to northern economic security, and we must never sacrifice our relationship with Canada in a misguided attempt to increase border security. I have long said that economic security and physical security are not mutually exclusive. We can, and must, have both."
