Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I am sure others can help me out here, but I know its nice if your heading for an area for a trip and have a detailed report at your disposal. I will try to keep this one going for the remainder of the year.
Warmer, Topwater, Disappointment.
That sums up the last week. The fish were not chasing as much last week as they were previously, but they are eating more often. I will take that trade off anytime. Water has warmed up to summer levels, I actually saw high 70's on the Moen's Chain on Tuesday.
Tail rotating baits are the hot item right now. Bucktails and spinnerbaits are running a close second. Topwater has been working anytime of the day with a few fish chasing Top Raiders right in the middle of the bright blue days.
Now for the disappointment.....The boat lost two very good fish last week. One of them was lost by yours truly, an upper forty inch fish that I never got good hooks into. That was not the big disappointment however, Ralph had never musky fished before in his 64 years. Only saw one musky in his life up till now. He lost a 48+ on a topraider very near the boat on Sunday. He did everything perfectly, it apparently just wasn't meant to be. Some days musky fishing just aint fair.
This week is the first stretch of warm stable weather we have seen all year. Get out your bucktails and topwater and put some fish in the boat! Should be good, I will report back next week.

Location: minocqua, wi. | we've all been experiencing the same things but a thought for everyone to put more fish in the boat under the conditions we've had is to prepare to be out really early or to fish nights as options. i would echo norm's comments on spinner baits and prop-style topwater having most action in my boat, unfortunately in order to make them famous they have to open their mouths. last week just bodies flying around without any tug-o'-war ...
most everyone saw the musky dr.'s comments on the recent league and tournament numbers which are dismal to say the least ... the window is GOING TO OPEN ... it's just a matter of when. ran into some of the other local wmt anglers last night and same type of comments from them too ... mayfly hatch was big this year ... also, for some reason lots of panfish dying on the water up here .... ???
i'd personally love to see a front come through no matter what the conditions are on the back side ... |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Fished Moens with Shorty from noon to 5:30, two short fish and a couple pike. We fished the slop and the edges, but the fish were not going. Headed to Pelican for the evening, and the traffic out there was nuts. LOTS of muskie fishermen; I couldn't fish a couple of my favorite spots because of the boats out there. No one fishing it anymore because of the new 50" limit, I guess...we moved one fish. All in all it was hot, calm, and hot out there, but i had a great day on th4e water with a very good fisherman.
No dead pannies on either lake yesterday, so what ever the infection was that killed them it seems to have passed. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wi | My friend and I went out on Crescent on saturday night about 8pm and fished till 11. Saw 3 fish boil just before dark but no action otherwise. We were throwing mainly topwater with a few bucktails mixed in. Water temps were between 76 and 79 degrees. Lots of weeds floating on the surface from all the boat trafic. |

| Thanks for the updates guys. Steve- I read in the Lakeland that the virus is called Columnarium (I think that's what it is) and is prevalent in quickly warming water where the virus thrives on bacteria that grow at that temp. We saw alot of dead pannies on Little Saint 2 weekends ago and others in our group reported the same on Found and some on Little Arb too. It's a natural thing- doesn't impact the general population and must be nature's way of thinnin' the herd some. Again- thanks for the updates. Headed to our place up there Thursday before a run to the Indian Chain north of Vermillion Bay for a week starting Saturday but who's counting

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | The seasonal location pattern is progressing very quickly this season. You can still find fish in typical June areas, but the summer locations are becoming more and more prevalent. We have been contacting numerous fish on mid lake structures, steep breaks and rocks. I attribute this to the rapid warm up we have had for the last week.
Water temps on all lakes are now well into the 70's. Pelican read 75, Three Lakes was at 76, and the winner for the week was the Moen's Chain at a balmy 80. Cooler nightime temps this week will moderate temps a little, but temps should remain in the 70's for the remainder of the near future.
Baits that have been working over the last week....TOPWATER. The majority of the fish located and boated are eating topwater baits. Top Raiders are leading the march, but they have been showing an interest to Weagles recently. Bulldawgs have also been producing well, but a more straight retrieve has been triggering more eaters with the Mag Dawgs. Bucktails and Spinnerbaits are also moving fish.
For those of you coming up for the MuskieFirst Outting, see you there! |

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Sorry for the delay in reports. What's been going on in the Rhinelander area? Its been a bit tough! Fish are not chasing as much as they should be at this time of the year.
Fish are still set up where they should be, but feeding windows have been very short. Putting fish in the boat right now is a bit more like work than pleasure. We have been getting an opportunity or two every day on the water, staying focused and ready is the difference between boating a fish or two right now or going home empty handed.
Bait choice has changed a bit. I have been getting action yet on topwater, but it has been almost strictly a Weagle bite not the typical Top Raider. Bucktails and spinnerbaits have also been effective, as have 10" unweighted suicks worked over and through the weedtops.
Water temps have pretty much stabilized in the lower to mid 70's. I hope everyone is having a safe and Happy 4th of July week. I will be on the water tonight, and then I am taking a three day hiatus visiting friends and going to Summerfest. Good luck out there. |
