I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is on what color baits to fish in clear water and dark water.

There are many theories on bait colors (and a lot of previous information on this site). IMO Black/White or other high contrast patterns are hard to beat in any water clarity.

Dark Day, Dark Lure. Bright Day, Bright Lure. Add brighter reds and oranges to the Dark Day there, and you have it, IMHO.

I question why? What makes bright lures good on bright days and dark on dark days? Does it have something to do with the contrast or is it because it's the old stanby for many people? Like black bucktails for example, is black the best color because it's black or is it the best color because 75% of the people are throwing black bucktails with various blade colors. Now was it the blade color that attracted the fish or the color of the tail. Very interesting stuff. Keeps your mind boggling all day at work!

Black. All lures should be black. Then you'd only need two of each -- a big one and a little one. Better yet, make them all 7", and you could get by with one.

Black, and White are the Classic colors (typically with a nickel blade). I have also had good success on browns and reds with anything from copper to flame blades.

Clear to me though is 5-7 feet, I've never really fished any true clear water (trout water) with 15-20 feet of clarity.

I'm just starting out (stocking up) this year & followed the advice I got. I followed the forage colors in my lakes & threw in afew bright, contrasting colors. Perch, crappie, sucker, carp, bullhead patterns & a few firetiger etc... Basic white, yellow, orange with black, brown, green contrasts, mostly. The lakes around here are mostly colored so I leaned towards gold/copper metallic colors, but got a few silver, nickel for bright/clear. Must be doing something right because we're getting followers & even catching one once in awhile!

Clear water-clear days use natural colors, black or white! Cloudy days-dark water use firetiger or brighter smaller lures!
Also white works well in darker waters also.

I think dark colors on dark days and light colors on bright days has alot to do with perception in the water. With lighter colors on bighter days, its harder for the fish to tell what the bait is since it blends in a little better with the back ground(reduced sillouette). With darker colors and low or no light, it gives off more of a silloutte and gives the fish a little something more to key in on.

Prism, or chrome baits only reflects as much light that is available. therefore they do not throw as much flash on darker days. Tanic stained waters? It is hard to beat a black and orange combo. However, with muskys, nothing is written in stone.
