| Yesterday while watching the news, I saw on the scroll at the bottom of the screen that the U.S. government had lifted the passport requirement. Is anybody up on this? That is to enter and leave both Mexico & Canada. |

| I have "heard " from a buddy that spent 12 hours at the federal buliding in Chicago getting his pp for a trip next week..................that you have to have apllied for it already, and it has to be in the "processing" stages. You get some tracking number for where your passport is at/what stage it is in and with a birth certificate and driver's lic you can travel. This is what I have heard.
My gf and I went to Mexico last month and she used a pp expeditor company we found by googling passports on the net.......had to pay an extra $135 but she had it in 3 business days. The piece of mind was well worth the money spent as well as not having to f&ck with all the bureacratic bs.

Location: Columbus, Georgia | Anyone waiting until the day before a trip to get a passport deserves to wait in line for 12 hours.

| You need a passport or proof the you have applied to drive back in the US from Canada. You might run into a nice person who lets you slide by, but they are enforcing it at this point. It could be a long few weeks stuck there waiting on a new passport...also this is the only way to prove you a citizen of the US...might be worth having... |

My buddy applied 14 weeks ago when they told him the wait was 6-8 weeks and 10 tops. So he apllied 15 weeks in advance of his trip. Still had to go wait in the line for 12 hours. I would not classify that as his fault.

Location: minocqua, wi. | if anyone who feels the don't "deserve" to wait in line needs some advice on getting one quicky and efficiently try www.perryvisa.com ... they are located in chicago and you can download forms online and work with them via fedex. i've had to use them to get visas for trips that come up with short notice and they've performed every time.
good luck |

See you on the 23rd.

Location: Athens, Ohio | From what I can tell from news reports, the Dept. of Homeland Secrecy has an unbelievable backlog, sot hte easing of restrictions only involves -as stated above- that if you have proof you applied for but still have not received your passport, you may still travel on the confirmation slip given by the dept. when they receive your application.
As far as Canada goes, this year you need a passport to re-enter the US by air. Next year you will need one to re-enter your homeland by ground transport. That has not changed, at least, not yet. If in doubt contact the department. m

Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | I was concerned with this as well. I spoke with a woman at US Customs and she verified that we do not need passports for traveling by car until Jan. 08, but need them by air now. I think it is a good idea to have one, but for this year by ground, you do not need them. Call them to verify if you like, here is the number... 202-354-1000. |

| I just drove back and forth twice this year and was told the law has been on the books for two years and even though they are saying 2008 it is the boarder officers option to enforce it or not. It was a big hassle to first time as I just brought my drivers license and BC...second time I brought my passport with no issues... |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | I now work for American Express Global Assist as a supervisor and we help people with travel related problems and passport and visa issues in addition to medical problems, cash and basically any type of trouble you could get in while travelling the world. The state department has only lifted the passport requirement if you currently have a pending application for a new or replacement passport whether by the regular route or through a passport expedition service. You must be able to prove that you are in the application process by going to www.state.gov and printing off your pending application. If any has any travel related issues shoot me a pm as I am now an "expert". All the years in the ER have really taken their toll with my spinal problems and I found this job and it is really great. |
